“Um…” Lyn pondered the entire thing. “Surprise me?” She grinned sheepishly. She had never been good with questions like ‘how hungry are you?’, or ‘how much of this do you want?’. “I’m sure I’ll manage whatever you throw at me.”
That was an odd way to put it, she thought to herself, inwardly shrugging. “Besides, it looks way too good to waste, and I’m starved. I’m sure I won’t struggle.” Her wolf howled hungrily, and her mouth watered again. Good thing the food was ready.

“Why don’t we start you off with one and then if you like it, you can help yourself more?” Nick suggested, going to work transferring an enchilada from the pan to her plate. “That’s probably the best way to try out someone’s cooking for the first time anyway.”
He carefully transferred the food to her plate and handed it to her, nodding towards the bowl of rice, which he had actually remembered to stick a large spoon into before bringing to the table. “Help yourself to the rice, chips and salsa so you can decide how much you want as you get it.” Taking up the second plate, he began to prepare it for himself.

“Sounds like a plan.” She nodded her head, reaching up to sweep some stray blond locks off her shoulder, over onto her back, so they wouldn’t get in the way. She didn’t tell him she was so hungry that she probably wouldn’t care too much about the taste, so long as she could eat it without it upsetting her stomach. “And I’m sure it’s all great, so don’t worry about a thing.”
Lyn accepted the plate with a smile of thanks. When he said she should help herself, she nodded again, and then took him up on the offer. She put a bit of everything on her plate, to sample the variety, before taking a seat at the table, so she could actually get down to eating.

"Well, I hope it's at very least digestible," he replied with a grin, moving to put some rice and chips on his plate before putting a little salsa over it all. Once he was satisfied, he settled himself in a seat, taking up one of beers.

Lyn had sampled a little bit of everything by this point, and as she chewed, waiting to swallow, she nodded her head in agreement. “Oh, it definitely seems to be doing the trick.” She smiled, reaching for her own beer. “It’s delicious, thank you.”
It wasn’t very often at all that Lyn indulged in any kind of home cooked food, so she was determined to enjoy it. It didn’t hurt that it tasted great, either, and seemed to be doing a fine job of satisfying her appetite, a little at a time.

“Hey, no problem. Believe it or not, I actually like cooking, but if anyone asks, I deny it. Got to keep up my tough guy image.” He was, of course, joking. Somewhat, anyway. With that, he dug into his own meal.

Lyn nodded. “Deny your love for cooking.” She smiled. “Check. Your secret’s safe with me.”
They continued eating for a while in silence, helping themselves to new portions and slowly draining their beers. “So where did you learn to cook?” the female wolf found herself asking, lifting her eyes from her newest enchilada to inquire curiously, head tilting just a fraction to the side. She’d loosely pulled her hair back with a tie she’d found in her pocket, after nearly getting salsa in it… twice.

At Lyn's question, Nick looked up from his dinner and gave a shrug. "Here and there. I've had a lot of time on my hands, so I put some of it to use learning something that might come in handy sometime. I mean, it's usually a waste to cook just for me- it's a lot easier just to go out or order in- but I always figured it'd come in handy at some point, so I've always picked up tips when I could find someone to give them to me." He took a drink of beer and realized that he had rambled on a bit. Oh, well. Not like it's the first time that's happened.

A lot of time… that’s putting it simply. She remembered how old Nick had said he was, and how she’d nearly choked on what she’d had in her mouth at the time. He was over double her age… but when she really thought about it, there was nothing about that fact that bothered her. It had merely taken her by surprise.
Lynnette didn’t mind Nick’s rambling. That was fairly obvious by the way she always seemed to give him her full attention whenever he spoke, her eyes looking into his, or in his direction if she couldn’t flat-out meet his gaze. “Well, it’s paid off. I can’t remember the last time I had a home cooked meal, and certainly not one I’ve enjoyed this much.” She smiled. “I’d say mission accomplished.”

Nick couldn't help the smile of pleasure that came to his face at her compliments. Even someone like him liked to hear they had done a good job on occasions. "Well, I'm glad you like it. If it's really that good, then maybe I haven't gotten as rusty as I was thought I had."

Again, she smiled; it seemed to come all too naturally when she spent time with Nick. “Oh, I wouldn’t worry about that,” she assured him, and then gave a light laugh with a chuckle.
“But what do I know? This is my first time trying your cooking. For all I know, you have gotten rusty, and your food used to be even better.” Realising she sounded as if she was giving him too much praise, she took up her bottle of beer, and swigged from it slowly. She didn’t want to give him a big head, after all. Then again, Lyn liked to give praise where it was due.

Nick gave a nod to her comment. "You're right. Maybe I have gotten rusty. I mean, I don't cook enough to notice one way or the other." He gave a shrug. "As long as it doesn't make you want to go toss it all in the garbage and order in a pizza, I'm happy." It was rare for Nick to get to the point of getting compliments from anyone, so he had the habit of taking whatever he could get. Not that he lived on compliments, of course. If that was the case, he wouldn't have spent so many years on his own. He just liked to be told every century or so that he hadn't totally screwed something up.

“No, no pizza.” She shook her head, and laughed to herself. “I think, after this, going back to takeout will be a step down, definitely.” She shrugged, and drank from her bottle again, setting it down on the table afterwards, and returning to the meal.
Lyn usually wasn’t the type to dish out compliments without reason; she also wasn’t the type to say she enjoyed something when she didn’t. True, it had just been a long time since she’d eaten anything homemade, but given she was an honest individual, when she’d told Nick the food was delicious, she hadn’t been exaggerating.

"Well, then, I'm glad." He drained his beer and looked at the bottle like it had just insulted him. "I hate it when these things go empty." He stood, bottle in hand. "You need a fresh beer yet, or are you easier on these things than I am?"

The blonde female brandished her own empty bottle. “Guess that answers your question, huh?” she asked with a soft laugh in her tone, shrugging her shoulders. “I never learned to take it easy on the alcohol. After all, it’s not like we can just get drunk at the drop of a hat, like a lot of humans.”
It was a blessing and a curse at the same time. Sometimes, she wondered if being able to drink yourself silly could come in useful. But with her lycanthropy, she would never be able to find out… either that, or she’d have to spend a hell of a lot of money trying to get that far.
