"Anything but beer. You know I hate beer." Sarah was already opening a cabinet and pulling out two bowls. The meat, she noted with great satisfaction, was what the restaurants liked to call "spoon tender" -- it could be cut with ridiculous ease. She sliced it into tender, bite-sized chunks, then ladled the roast into the bowls. "And since we can't have dinner without a movie, which blow-stuff-up film shall we indulge in this time?"

Pulling two green cans out of the refrigerator door rack, he let it swing shut behind him, thinking over her question. “Hmm… well, it’s not like I don’t have a selection,” he reminded her, offering her one of the cans so he could carry his own bowl into the living room. “Any particular preference, or should we live dangerously and pick at random?”
He smirked playfully as they headed back into the lounge, reclaiming their seats. Chris put his bowl and can on the coffee table, and headed for the DVD rack, looking down at it. “Okay, I have too much of a selection. Help me narrow this down, huh?” He glanced back at her, chuckling almost sheepishly.

"Hrm." Sarah carried her own food to the coffee table, then went to join him at the rack, eyes flicking over the titles. "Well, I've never seen this one." She picked up one of the DVDs and examined it. "Thoughtcrimes? What's that about?"

“Hmm? Oh.” He took the case from her, and flipped it over to let her read the back. “Uh… to put it simply without ruining it for you, she’s a telepath, and he’s an NSA agent, and they have to stop a terrorist.” He shrugged lightly. “But,” he added, “something does blow up, so it fits into the category. It’s pretty good, actually.”
And here’s hoping she doesn’t mention what people always mention about this movie, he thought to himself, remembering what his cousin, Megan, had said when she’d given it to him.

"Sounds like a winner. Let's have a look." Satisfied with the choice, Sarah sat down and popped open her soda while Chris fired up the movie. She waited until he joined her on the sofa before starting to eat, but when she did, she was extremely pleased. "Hey, this is pretty good, if I do say so myself."

Reclaiming his seat, he took his bowl and tried some, nodding his head in agreement to Sarah’s comment. “Well, if it helps, I say so too.” Setting the bowl down again, he opened his own soda, taking a mouthful as the movie got started. “Takes a while to get going, but it’s worth it when it gets there.” Setting down the can, he picked up his meal again, and tucked in anew.
After a while, he settled back on the couch, alternating between watching the movie, and eating, with occasional sips from the can on the coffee table.

Sarah was mostly quiet, being interested in the story, until the first appearance of the character Brendan Dean. At first she just watched, then did a double take. Wait a minute...
"You mean I'm not the only one of us with a Hollywood doppelganger?" she asked finally. "That guy looks like you, Shep....a lot like you. Only, you know, cute."

By that point, Chris had finished his food, and was fiddling with his soda can, his eyes mostly on the TV screen. When she mentioned the likeness, a ring pull sailed in her direction, pinging off the cushion just to the left of her shoulder. When she looked at him in a ‘what was that for?’ manner, he simply said, though with a smile, “Don’t.” Setting his can down, he decided to elaborate.
“That’s the reason my cousin got me this movie in the first place. She thought it was funny, since… well, she said the same thing.” He pulled a face. “Except about the cute part.” And considering it was his cousin, that was a good thing. “Besides, I can’t remember the last time I had the Scooby Doo theme stuck in my head.”

"Hey, you're preaching to the choir, Sheps," Sarah reminded him good-naturedly. "Why do you think I hate the boat movie so much? Do you know how many times I've been asked if my heart will go on?" She pulled a face. "And don't even get me started on the Leonardo DiCrappio business."
"I hate that song," he remarked placidly.
"Yeah." Sarah eyed the actor onscreen. "He's definitely not hard on the eyes, I'll give him that. And I think I've got a thing for his voice." She laughed, and glanced at her partner's empty bowl. "You want more of the roast?"

“At least my doppelganger is in a good movie,” he laughed. “The boat movie’s overrated anyway.” He shrugged, before realising she’d asked him a question. He had just about finished off his soda as well, he realised. “No, I’m good for now, thanks. You want another drink? I’m running on empty.” He tipped his can towards him, but not all the way; he could feel some liquid in the bottom, and it wouldn’t have done anything for his self-esteem if he poured Mountain Dew over himself.
Already rising from the chair, he offered to take her bowl into the kitchen with him when he went to grab himself a new drink.

"Yeah, I'll give you that. But it's not like the boat movie's the only thing she's ever done -- most of her other stuff has been good. And frankly, she was the one thing I liked about the boat movie. Well, her and a couple of the bit players." She handed him her bowl. "Another drink sounds pretty good, thanks. Leave the pot on the stove, so if we change our minds about having more it'll still be warm. I'll put it in the freezer containers when the movie's over."

“Can’t say I’ve seen a lot of her stuff,” Chris commented with a simple smile and a shrug, glancing to the screen to see where the movie was. Nothing was going to blow up… yet. “And aye aye,” he added in a quip as she gave him instructions about the pot roast. He would have given a little salute had his hands not been full, but as it was, they were, and he was forced to abandon the idea.
He made short work of disposing of the dishes and fetching new cans. Resisting the urge to toss the can of Dew to her, he simply passed it to her across the table, before flopping down on the couch again.

They continued watching in silence for a while, though Sarah cracked up laughing when Brendan Dean did, as Chris said, start thinking the words to the Scooby-Doo theme. After finishing the second Dew, Sarah abandoned the empty can on the table and stretched out, head on Chris's knee. It was not an unusual position for her to take -- she liked to say he was very comfortable -- and he made no comment when she adopted the pose.
"Wow," she remarked as the movie started winding down. "You're right, that was good. But geez, was he into her or what?"

Even as the credits started rolling, Chris was nodding. “Well, I think everyone but him knew that by the end.” He smirked and shrugged. “Though it wasn’t exactly fair on him; she could read his mind, after all.” And that was stating the painfully obvious, he realised, pulling a face. Shrugging it off, he looked down at her.
“Comfy?” he asked needlessly, knowing already that her answer would be yes. It was a habit of hers, and he’d already moved to lean against one arm of the couch so she could stretch out properly and he could play ‘cushion’ for her.

"Typical male," Sarah yawned, stretching. "Completely oblivious to his own feelings. But you do realize that a woman reading a man's mind isn't exactly unusual." She glanced up at him, grinning and not bothering to even answer the question about whether she was comfortable. "I bet I can read yours."
He responded with an incredulous smirk, so she affected a thinking expression. "Knowing you....and the way your mind works....you're probably thinking something completely evil, like, 'If she doesn't get off my legs in the next five minutes, I'm going to tickle her mercilessly.'"
