Name: Brittany Jane Yates.
Nicknames: Mostly goes by Britt when not at the hospital but when there usually responds to Yates more than anything as that is how her resident refers to her.
Race: Human.
Occupation: Intern in the ER at St. Benedict’s Hospital.
Gender: Female.
Skin Colour: Caucasian.
Nationality: American.
Age: 24, though she often looks younger than that especially if she pulls her hair back.
Clothing: Brittany is practical in her clothing whilst still appearing feminine. She opts for jeans over skirts most of the time though they will be slimmer fitting jeans over baggy ones, she usually wears vest tops in the summer months and carries a sweater tied around her waist in case the weather turns or a light jacket will be worn over the top. In colder months she will wear longer sleeved tops when she is out and about, often with wide cuffed sleeves. She wears lighter colours almost all the time, pastels and bright colours such as yellows, pinks and the like, the only exception to this are her jeans which are either a variation of the stone wash blue or black. Even though she’s not overly tall she tends to stick to shoes with next to no heel, flat ballet pumps or sneakers being her preferred footwear though if she is going out with friends or has a date she will break out the high heels. When she is working she wears light blue scrubs with a white coat over the top, she wears flat comfortable shoes as she knows she’s going to be on her feet for hours at a time.
Height: 5’6”.
Weight: 117lbs.
Tattoos: Has a hummingbird tattoo on her right shoulder blade, the design is almost tribal in appearance and done entirely in black ink. It is usually visible whenever she isn’t working and it’s not too cold to wear a top that will show it off.
Piercings: Has her ears pierced once. She used to have her belly button pierced but took it out after she started in medical school because she was worried that she would either catch it on something in her training or that it could be ripped out by a patient when she began her internship.
Jewellery: She usually wears small studs or hoops in her ears when not in the hospital, never when she’s working. She wears a gold St. Christopher medallion that was a gift from her mother; it sits on a gold chain and is never taken off.
Body Modifications: Has a scar on her left ankle from when she got it caught in a fence when she was a child.
Hair[/u]
Length: Her hair falls down to just past her shoulders with it being a little bit shorter towards the front, there is some light layering through the length to add some texture as her hair can otherwise appear quite flat.
Style: She wears her hair up most of the time at work, a simple ponytail is easiest for her to maintain when at the hospital but she will occasionally tie it back in more imaginative ways if she has the time. When she’s away from the hospital she will wear it down allowing it to fall as it will or sometimes she will add a curl to it or flick the ends out to give it a messier appearance.
Colour: A rich brown with some natural highlights showing through if she has managed to actually catch some sunlight.
Facial Hair[/u]
Length: N/A.
Style: N/A.
Eyes[/u]
Colour: Brown.
Oddities: None.
Personality: When you first meet Brittany the first thing that you’ll notice is her bubbly personality, you are not likely to meet a person more friendly and bubbly than her. She is almost always happy or at least looking happy, she doesn’t let anything get her down and tries to find the silver lining in everything. She takes positivity and optimism to a new level, in fact some people can find her too much and she has lost count of the amount of times that people have tried to either bring her down or convince her that things aren’t always going to work out. Those people never manage to bring her down though, she knows that things don’t always work out but she likes to hold on to the belief that they will because if she lets go of that then she might very well realise that things aren’t always good and that some of the things she sees are downright depressing. She doesn’t care if it is naive to have such a view of the world, deep down she knows that there isn’t always an upside to things she just chooses to try and find the good in the bad, no matter how bad it might be.
Brittany is the type of person that will strike up a conversation with a complete stranger, she doesn’t care if she’s known someone for five years or five minutes, she will talk to them. That being said she is a little careful about who she talks to, she’s not going to go up to every single person and begin a conversation because she knows that not everyone likes to talk to strangers. She might come across as naive but she isn’t. If there is one thing that she should really learn not to do then that’s to trust people so quickly. She is incredibly trusting of people and likes to believe that people really do have good intentions even when that might not be the case. She’s been hurt a few times in the past because of her willingness to trust, most notably by her so called boyfriend in medical school, she thought he loved her and wanted to be with her but in truth he was only using her because she was smarter than he was. Since then she has been a little bit more wary but only really when it comes to who she dates, she still trusts too easily and it may very well result in her getting hurt again.
All through her life Brittany has been plagued by peoples’ preconceived ideas of her, they think that because of her bubbly personality and her friendly nature that she must be a ditz without two brain cells to rub together but that is not the case at all. Brittany is smart, really smart; she finished in the top ten percent of her year in medical school which a lot of people find hard to believe. It is one of the only things that actually bothers her, when people treat her like she’s dumb it really gets to her and she can be quick to put them in their place, usually by coming out with something intellectual that will leave them stunned. What really gets her is when other people at the hospital think she’s stupid, she hates it when male doctors treat her as just a pretty face who must have slept her way through med school, it’s people like that which she really can’t stand and the ones she really enjoys taking down a peg or two either with some scathing come back or by simply rattling off as much information about the case they might be working on as she can.
Weaknesses: Mortality, being a human means there are lots of ways she could be killed, of course Brittany is currently unaware of just how many dangers there are out there in the world, she doesn’t know that there are werewolves and vampires out there some of whom wouldn’t hesitate to kill her if they felt like it. Her complete ignorance of the supernatural world is a weakness in and of itself because she doesn’t know the risks she takes every time she goes out alone at night, she has her pepper spray of course but it would be of little use if a vampire decided to make a meal out of her. She is allergic to peanuts. Over the years her allergy seems to have gotten more severe to the point where she has to carry an epi pen with her everywhere she goes because if she comes in to contact with peanuts or peanut oil she goes in to anaphylactic shock very quickly.
Abilities: Brittany wouldn’t really boast about any of the things she can do as she’s never been one to blow her own horn or anything like that. That being said she has a fairly wide range of skills that she has picked up in her short life. She is an accomplished horsewoman and actually had her own horse until she started medical school when she gave him to her mother who also rides. She has a good memory and rarely forgets anything once she has learnt it, a handy skill when you practise medicine. She can speak Spanish and French fairly well, the French was a school requirement and Spanish was an elective as she decided it would be handy as a large percentage of the population have Spanish as their first language.
Weapons: None, Brittany hates violence and would never actively seek it out or partake in anything that could lead to violence. She doesn’t believe in carrying any weapons though she does carry a can of pepper spray for protection, she might not believe in violence but she’s not an idiot either.
Prized Possessions: The necklace her mother gave to her when she was younger and her kitten, Magic, a grey tabby that she recently adopted from an animal shelter.
Home(s): A small apartment that unknown to her lies in Cole Stanton’s territory.
History: Brittany was born in to Louise and Dominic Yates. Both Dominic and Louise were doctors, successful surgeons to be exact. Louise had decided to take a year out of work to bond with her new baby. Brittany had what could be described as the perfect childhood, two parents that loved her and encouraged her in anything she chose to do and she wasn’t lacking in the friends department when she started school. She wasn’t spoiled though, her parents made her prove to them that she really wanted or needed anything she asked for and if there was a hobby she wanted to take up she had to prove that she would stick with it and that it wasn’t a passing fad. Some might say that she was still spoiled but she didn’t get bought things just because she asked for them which is many people’s definition of spoiled, she worked for everything she had and that made her appreciate everything more than those that just had everything given to them.
Early on in her life she decided that she was going to follow on in her family’s footsteps and become a doctor, her parents were doctors, and her grandparents were doctors it was in her blood. Her parents were proud that she had decided to choose the family trade as it were and offered her all the support they could. Knowing what she wanted to be when she grew up from an early age meant that she could focus on the subjects that would be of most use to her to get in to college and then med school. She was focused on doing well in school and unlike many of her friends she studied hard and even asked for extra credit work, a few of her friends thought she was wasting her time and that she didn’t have what it took to become a doctor but she didn’t pay any attention to what they said and kept on working hard.
Everything was almost completely derailed one summer afternoon when she attended a friend’s birthday party. It was just a normal day and they were all having fun before they sat down to eat, nothing was out of the ordinary and none of the children had a care in the world. When they sat down they were all busy laughing and gossiping like girls were prone to do, Brittany joining in with her friends and joking with the others as she helped herself to food. It was only when she started eating one of the sandwiches that she’d helped herself to that things turned bad, she started to have problems breathing and it felt as if her throat was closing up, all the other girls started to scream and panic as they watched their friend struggle to breathe. Luckily one of the parents rang for an ambulance as soon as they realised there was a problem, it turned up fast and they rushed Brittany to the hospital where she was treated for an allergic reaction. It turned out that she had always had a mild allergy to peanuts but it had gone undetected because it had been so mild until now. Her parents were advised to check all the foods they had in the house for any traces of peanuts and peanut oil and ensure that she didn’t come in to contact with any of them, being doctors themselves they knew how serious the situation was and they wasted no time removing anything that contained traces of peanut from their house and made sure that they had epi pens on hand and also that Brittany would carry one with her wherever she went.
Instead of letting her new found allergy effect her entire life she went on much as she always had, she was more determined than ever to become a doctor and wasn’t about to let a little thing like an allergy get in her way. She took it seriously though, checking the labels of anything she was going to eat and making sure that anyone who invited her round for food knew that they had to do the same. It lost her a friend or two because they thought that she was making mountains out of molehills but she didn’t let it get to her. Brittany never let anything that anyone said get to her and if it ever did then she just went and indulged in her favourite hobby, riding her horse that her parents had bought her, she spent any spare time that she had looking after her horse, if she wasn’t studying she was riding. The older she got the less time she had to pursue her hobby though and the more time she spent studying, it made her slightly sad that she couldn’t spend as much time riding as she would like but she knew that she had to work hard if she was going to keep her grades up and get in to a good medical school based on her own actions and not who her family was.
Her high school career was just like you would expect for someone aiming to get in to a good college and do pre-med, she barely had any time to spend with her friends and as a result she became more isolated but that didn’t really bother her as she was doing something she wanted to. That wasn’t to say that she was a complete loner, she made time when she could to hang out with her friends and have something of a social life but her studies were always put first before having fun with friends. It lost her a few friends who hadn’t really been that close and to be honest she hardly noticed when they stopped speaking to her.
All her hard work paid off and she was accepted in to a prestigious pre-med college, just like with high school she was focused on her studies and while she had a few friends that she made on her courses she spent most of her time in the library studying, she attended the odd college party but only when she didn’t have any work that needed to be done. She barely took notice of anyone unless they were on her courses and if there was a possibility that she could learn something from them or them from her, she did like to help people after all it was why she wanted to become a doctor. College wasn’t exactly easy, it was hard work and she had little free time apart from any breaks between the semesters and even then she was busy working and studying.
Brittany kept up the hard work all through college and before she knew it she was off to med school. Things were hard, she knew it was never going to be easy and there were a couple of times in the first couple of months that she wanted to give up, times when she thought she didn’t have what it took to become a doctor but with the help of one of her close friends from college she battled through that anxiety and applied herself with new vigour. She’d always been so focused on her studies that she’d barely noticed guys, sure she’d had boyfriends before but the relationships had ended quickly when the guys had realised that she was more focused on her studies than them. She never expected to meet someone in med school she just assumed that everyone would be too focused on becoming doctors to worry about relationships. She was wrong though. It was when she was in a lab class that she met Brad, he seemed just as focused as her and they instantly hit it off, she started studying with him in the library and helping him with some of the subjects that he seemed to struggle with. Brittany was a bit oblivious to the fact that Brad saw her as more than a study partner, it was only when he asked her out on a date that she realised that he had feelings for her.
Their relationship started off slow, Brittany was hesitant as she didn’t want to rush in to anything and she had never really had a serious relationship before, Brad understood and was happy for them to go slow. They spent most nights studying and always sat side by side in lectures, Brad usually leaning over and whispering things in her ear. Gradually Brittany became more comfortable with Brad and allowed things to get even more serious, she even told him she loved him and from there things progressed.
Sadly Brittany was oblivious to the fact that Brad was using her, it wasn’t until it was too late that she discovered the truth and it almost destroyed her career before it even started. Everything fell apart just after they returned from a break between semesters. They hadn’t seen each other during the break and Brittany had missed him. She went over to his room with the intention of surprising him but it was her that got the surprise when she found him in bed with another woman. Shocked in to silence she ran out the door in tears, she didn’t stop running until she got back to her room. She was devastated. Brad called her and tried to pass it off as nothing but the more she thought about it the more she began to realise that their relationship had been based on lies. At least on his side, she had given him her heart and he had just cast it aside as if it was nothing. She wallowed in self pity for over a week, even her best friend couldn’t talk her out of her room. It began to look as if she was going to give up and go home and she would have done if it hadn’t been for the fact that she didn’t want to do anything else with her life.
Luckily she hadn’t missed any classes during her confinement to her room, she’d come back to school early because she’d wanted to see Brad. It hurt when she saw him again but she didn’t speak to him even when he came up to her and tried to act as if nothing had happened. She threw herself in to her studies with even more enthusiasm than before, not allowing anyone to distract her from her work no matter how much interest they showed in her. Even if she had wanted to she was still hurting over Brad and his betrayal, the full truth of their relationship was finally revealed when he flunked out of a class that he had previously been excelling in, one that she excelled in and one of those classes where he had always sat next to her and whispered things in her ear all through the class. That realisation made it hurt even more, she spent nights crying herself to sleep all over again as she had done when she had first found out he didn’t feel the same way. It wasn’t long before he was failing in all his classes and was thrown out of med school. It made it easier on Brittany as she no longer had to see him every day and slowly she started to feel better about the whole thing.
Throughout the rest of med school she worked just as hard and finally decided on what type of doctor she wanted to be, she decided she wanted to work in an ER. There was just something about the department that caught her attention and made her believe that was the way to go for her. She started applying for internships as soon as she decided what she wanted to do and all that was left for her to do was wait for the replies from the hospitals. She was a nervous wreck when she was waiting to hear back as were all her friends as they waited to see if they got in to their chosen programmes. It seemed like forever before she heard back from any hospitals and to her amazement she got in to the programme she was really hoping to: the Emergency Medicine programme at St.Benedict’s in Los Angeles. She was overjoyed and knew this was going to be a fresh start to her life and one that she was going to take full advantage of. Well before she was due to start she went apartment hunting on the internet and found herself somewhere to live, it didn’t matter to her that it was a tiny apartment it was her own place and she couldn’t wait to move in.
Her life has certainly changed since she moved out to Los Angeles but she is happy and she doesn’t regret taking the internship. It isn’t easy but then she knew it wouldn’t be and she is seeing so much more than she could have expected. It is almost like being back at school again, she sometimes feels like she is way out of her depth but with the help of her resident Dr. Nathaniel Wilder she is slowly finding her feet and becoming a good doctor.
