The grin and the wave inspired a new burst of giggles in Lynnette, and she had to prop her elbow on the car door to use her hand to shield her face so the woman wouldn’t see it. Apparently something had gotten into Nick… not that that was a bad thing of course. Lynnette found it extremely amusing, and pretty damn endearing. At the mention of stripping, she almost choked on her laughter. “Okay, whatever you’re on, I want some. You need to share.” As she spoke, her tone was disrupted by her mirth but she didn’t care. They had set out to enjoy themselves, and she was definitely having fun, thanks to Nick.
With a content sigh, she slouched into her seat a little more, giving the kid in the back of the SUV a cheery little wave as the larger vehicle shuffled along in the moving traffic. She smiled and shook her head, wondering if the kid would talk about this incident to his friends in school; would he share the tale of how some strange man had stood up in his car and howled at the moon? She briefly mused over whether or not their innocent, wild imaginations would brand the howling man as a werewolf, and her smile stuck on her face as she thought it over.

Nick smirked and simply shook his head as the traffic moved a bit. “I’m just in a really good mood, though if there was something that could make me feel like this all the time, you better believe that I’d have some and if you really needed some, I’d share. Although, having good company sort of seems like a drug of some kind. I’ve realized that I tend to feel best when I’m with you.” He wasn’t shy about admitting that. It was the truth and why shouldn’t he say it? Besides, it wasn’t like he was admitting the feelings that he had been developing for her at an almost alarmingly fast rate. What he had said could be applied to someone who was just a friend, even if he thought that he might like her to be more.

She wasn’t sure what it was about the admission, but hearing him say it made the heat rise into her cheeks a little, and she was glad of the fact that it was night, and the brief flush was mostly concealed by the darkness that the lights and headlight glow couldn’t penetrate. She smiled sincerely, leaned her head against her hand, her elbow still propped on the side of the car.
“If it helps,” she said, wishing she could put her words in a nice, poetic kind of way, like he had, “the feeling is most definitely mutual.” And the more time she spent with him, and the more her mind turned it over and over, the more she came to the realisation that the way she felt about Nick wasn’t so easily described as ‘just a friend’. And it was a little alarming how quickly that had come around. But more surprising was the fact that Lynnette didn’t, in any way, feel intimidated by it. Nick was the first male of her kind that she felt she could trust, and that, in and of itself, was comforting.

Nick tilted his head down just slightly, a sign that he would have been blushing if he actually blushed. Since the traffic was actually moving, though just at a snail’s pace, he had a reason to keep his eyes on the road. At the moment, he didn’t quite know what he might do if he was to look at her, but he knew that it was likely something that probably shouldn’t come about so soon after having met her.
“That means a lot to me,” he told her truthfully. “More than I can even begin to tell you.” Nick wasn't normally a sentimental male- normally, what he had said to her never would have been spoken out loud, but he felt that he needed to say it. He wanted her to know. He thought he might have even needed her to know.

Werewolves were that little bit more adept at reading body language than any human would have been, using instinct and a kind of feral intuition in order to do so, and Lynnette watched Nick bow his head a little. He couldn’t have been… but if he was, her wolf almost gave a little howl of something not too unlike excitement. But she moved on. It wasn’t as if she was going to call him on it anyway; he hadn’t called her on her blush, after all, and beyond that, she wasn’t the type.
Looking his way again when he spoke, Lynnette’s smile faded, but not from disappointment, or anything else so negative. She lowered her arm from the car door, and settled it in her lap along with her other one, looking his way, and then her smile came back, soft and honest. “I’m glad,” she told him. “Same here.”

Nick looked to her as much as driving would allow- since the traffic was actually moving- and gave a smile that matched hers, just as soft and just as honest. It was a smile that had never been used by him before and he realized that, but he thought that if anyone deserved such a smile from him, it was Lynnette. “And I’m glad for that.”
Had his wolf had it’s way, things would have probably been progressing much quicker than they were, but Nick was good at resisting those urges. He did, after all, know that there was more to things than just jumping straight into things. Not that he had ever been against that before, but he desperately didn’t want to mess up anything good that might possibly happen between them somewhere down road.
A gleaming black Mustang suddenly cut them off and Nick hit the brakes quickly with a little growl, even as he looked to Lyn to make sure that she was okay. He knew that she was okay, but he just instinctively wanted to check so that he could be absolutely certain of it.

As glad as she was that the traffic was finally shuffling along, she found herself more relieved and happy that she’d managed to brighten Nick in her own little way, and vice versa. It had been so long since she’d felt so comfortable with someone, or had a friend she knew she would feel the loss of, but beyond that, she was coming to view Nick as… potentially, dare she say hopefully, more than a friend.
She had found herself lost in thought, picturing that smile from Nick in her head, when the car jumped in front of them, and she instinctively put a hand out to stop herself from shunting forward in the seat, eliminating the danger of hitting the dash. Her seatbelt caught her anyway, but that wasn’t the point. It had been reflex; automatic and self-preserving, even though she would have survived the impact, she was sure.
Her eyes darted to the side, her head turning so quickly that her hair was tossed, and she assured herself quickly that Nick was all right as well. He wouldn’t have been hurt, she knew, but she felt better seeing him unharmed, and breathed a sigh that was part annoyance at the idiot in front of them, and part relief for Nick’s quick thinking.
“Goddamn moron,” she practically growled. “What the hell was he thinking? He nearly caught an accident.”
Not to mention ruining the mood… jackass…

“Damn good thing he didn’t, though,” Nick said, annoyed about the ruined moment as well. “If you or my baby had been hurt, there would have been hell to pay.” Yes, Lynnette had come before his prized car and, while he knew perfectly well that werewolves were harder to harm than humans, a crash could have caused some sort of injury. And had Lynnette come away from the crash with so much a scratch, Nick thought that he would have had to have been pulled away from the other driver before he managed to commit murder, never mind the fact that she would heal. The car, which had been so important to him such a short time before now came in second place to her and it wasn’t even a close race.
Pressing the gas again, Nick glared daggers at the car now in front of him. He hated the typical Los Angeles driver…

“Then it’s his lucky day,” Lynnette sighed, leaning back in her seat and letting out the exhalation in a puff, reaching up with one hand to smooth hair away from her cheeks and temples, where it had fallen during the quick brake of the car. She hadn’t missed Nick putting her before his car, if only in the verbal sense, and she appreciated it in her own, odd way. Maybe she was reading too much into it, but it was sweet, in a way. She knew how much he loved his car.
“There’s the gas station, at least,” she pointed out, literally waving a finger towards the building out of the front windshield briefly. They could get off the road for a while. Maybe she could run inside and get some sodas or candy or something while Nick filled the car. She was starting to crave some sugar, which was simply an odd, moon-related thing, she knew. She found herself wondering if Nick was the same, but for the moment, couldn’t bring herself to ask.

“At least,” Nick agreed with a nod, carefully changing lanes in order to access the gas station. Maybe getting off the road for a couple of minutes would put him in a little bit of a better mood. Or at very least a calmer one because right now, he was ready to follow the jerk who had cut them off and give them a good bashing.
“I think getting out from behind the wheel will be good for my temper. While we’re there, you can go in and get something if you want, and, if you do, would you grab me a root beer? I’m paying for gas with my credit card, but I’ll come in after and pay for whatever we get.” He figured he could admit this next part to Lynnette. “When I get mad, I tend to get thirsty.” He gave a little shrug as he pulled off the road. “I think the bar owners tend to like it when I get made while I’m at their place.”

The shyness of his smile had tickled Lynnette in its own way, but not in such a manner that she had yearned to laugh at him, but really, she had found it sweet and endearing. All over again, she heard her inner voice chiding her for being childish, like a smitten schoolgirl, and she leaned her head against her raised hand for a moment, covering the move by sweeping her light hair back from her face ‘casually’.
Now that they were back on the road and the traffic seemed to have eased enough for their travel to be relatively constant, unlike before, she took the opportunity to roll down her window, to allow a refreshing breeze to trickle in and wash over her face. It would do her some good; clear her head before they went for that long-awaited, well-deserved run.
I wonder what his wolf looks like…
She realised he had spoken to her, and an automatic, genuine smile came into being. “And I’m feeling optimistic. I think so too.” His confident expression warmed her, and her smile lingered. He was right. They would find the perfect place.

As Nick drove, he found himself starting to get slightly worried about the run. His wolf looked more like a dog and he was starting to have second thoughts about actually having Lynnette realize that. It’s not like she’ll laugh or anything, he told himself. I didn’t have a choice as to what the wolf would look like. In the back of his mind, said wolf gave a growl, obviously not impressed by the thoughts.
Instead of letting his thoughts keep on that track, he instead wondered what Lynnette’s wolf would look like. He was willing to bet money that it was more impressive than his own since not much was required to pull that off. At least, as far as he was concerned.
Checking the rearview mirror, Nick changed lanes and they came closer and closer to the edge of the city. “It’s going to be nice to find somewhere other than the alleys to run,” he commented. He realized how lame that was, but he was trying to keep the conversation both alive and on nice, safe grounds. After all, it wouldn’t do for him to announce that he was developing some very serious, more-than-friends feelings for Lynnette. He was more than a little afraid that she would end up laughing at him, or even worse, he would scare her away.

Lynnette was more curious about her companion’s wolf than she thought she would have been, and to her shame, she found herself trying to picture its appearance. Would it have light hair or dark? Dark, definitely; black, maybe, or a rich brown of some kind. What about his eyes? Bright, without a doubt… gold, or yellow, maybe even some kind of green.
Good god, why was she obsessing over this? She would just have to wait, and then, it really didn’t matter. His wolf was his wolf, and she was sure it would be just as unique as Nick himself was as a human, and she wouldn’t care how he looked. And she hoped, more than she expected she should have, that Nick felt the same; her wolf wasn’t exactly… well, it didn’t matter. It wasn’t important.
“Our noses will probably thank us, at least,” she joked, and rather lamely, scrunching said nose for effect as well as a kind of apology for the bad quip. “I haven’t run on anything but concrete and whatever for so long that I’ve kinda forgotten what it feels like to have mud and grass under my paws.” Just the thought of refreshing that sensation almost made her fingers and toes tingle, and she smirked at the silliness of it.

“I know how that goes all too well,” Nick told her with a nod. “Running on some grass would be nice. Even dirt would be good and I’m not talking alley-dirt.” He drummed his fingers on the wheel out of an access of energy more than anything. It seemed as if his build up of energy was growing and he could practically smell fresh air. He needed this run badly and he couldn’t wait.
He was sure that no matter what Lynnette’s wolf looked like, he would think it was beautiful. Just like her. He knew that he shouldn’t let himself think that, not if he wanted to keep his tongue in check and not spill his guts to her, but he couldn’t help it. Lynnette was beautiful and he would have had to be blind and stupid not to realize it.

“Hell, I think jumping in a big puddle of mud would feel pretty damn good,” she laughed, shaking her head. It had been so long since she’d felt something natural and ‘organic’ between her wolfen toes, and she felt a shiver run up her spine at the thought of the freedom, and just how right it would feel, to be in her natural environment once again, for the first time in… well, a long time.
Her fingers tapped out a little rhythm only she could hear against the leg of her pants as they drove along. She could see where the city met the outskirts, and her senses buzzed eagerly. One finger pushed the ‘down’ button for the window, lowering it even more and she closed her brown eyes as the wind from outside whipped into the car and swept over her, peeling her hair back behind her face before she realised she shouldn’t tease herself. She raised the window again, and gave a sigh.
“If we don’t find a place soon, I think I might explode,” she joked with a hint of silliness. “And I wouldn’t want to mess up the interior.” She turned amused eyes on him and laughed again, shaking her head. Now she was just being ridiculous again, but she knew it was a mask; she was trying to hide the fact that she was nervous and excited, not only about the running, but more importantly, the company.
