As soon as Lynnette was off him, Nick turned over and scrambled back to his feet, giving himself another quick shake as he watched her. If she wanted him to chase her, that was exactly what she was going to get. While there was no chance that he would be able to bowl her over like she had him, he had his own ways of going about things.
Nick gave a soft yip of his own and bounded towards her. Even though he knew he couldn’t- working for a living really could be a pain at times- Nick really thought that he could keep up like this all night if he had the choice of doing so. He was starting to realized that he loathed the thought of the night having to end.

As he bounded forward, she hopped back, turning her body slightly so she was angled somewhat, giving a deep, wolfen bark. Her ears flicked, a taunting kind of ‘gonna have to do better than that’, before she let out a pitched, teasing growl. With a wiggle of her hind quarters, she turned, and bolted, letting the breeze cut through the trees and whip sharply through her fur.
Her long limbs and lean frame helped her speed, but she knew he wouldn’t be far behind. Or at least she hoped not. Just because she wanted him to chase her, that didn’t mean she wanted to get away from him… quite the opposite.

Nick took off after her like a shot, because there was no way he wanted to lose sight of her. Although, if he did he could just track her down again by following her scene. Still, he decided that he’d prefer that not to be how things turned out and put on a bit more speed, just to make sure that he kept her in sight. Actually catching her was something that might have to be planned out a bit, but he thought he could pull it off if he really gave it a try and he was definitely going to try. He was cursing his wolf form again, though. It wasn’t nearly as fun to chase someone when you really didn’t have a very good chance of catching them. Still, since he was currently chasing after Lynnette, he could let that slide for now.

She didn’t need to risk glancing over her shoulder to know that he was following her. With her sharp, werewolf sense of hearing and smell, she could practically picture him pursuing her, and it made her want to grin and laugh with excitement. Normally, she hated the feeling of being chased, but this was her first time being chased out of play rather than anything sinister, and it was like an unmistakeable fire in her blood… one she didn’t want to put out.
She weaved, leapt and shot through the natural obstacle course set out before her, following her feet, through another stream and over a lazy hill, to bound over another tumbled trunk. And he was right behind her every step of the way; she could hear him, and smell him, and it only made her want to keep running, so he could keep chasing her…

This was fun. No doubt about it. There was going to be quite the hike ahead of them when they got ready to go back to the car, but that was the least of Nick’s worries. Far too much enjoyment was coming from the playful chase for him to give the walk to the car more than the briefest of thoughts before it was out of his mind once again, replaced by thoughts of the chase in progress.
He was monitoring his pace carefully, wanting to keep up but not quite ready to catch up. If he could do the latter at all, but he thought that he might be able to pull it off. That, however, would depend on if he wanted to. While catching Lynnette would be fun, chasing after her was fun in and of itself.

As far as Lynnette was concerned, they could run back to the car. They had left their clothing back by the vehicle anyway, so there was no point in changing back and walking anyway. It just gave them a chance to burn off more steam if they ran back, and on the nights of the full moon, tiring oneself out was a good idea for a werewolf, otherwise it could lead to sleepless, restless nights of fidgeting and racing thoughts.
Feeling adventurous, she saw yet another tipped tree coming up, this one running along the length of the path she had been following. So she quickly changed her angle, and bolted up it, bracing herself to leap off the end. She found herself curious as to whether Nick would follow her up, or chase alongside, below. For all Lynnette knew, he was as agile as werewolves came, and a little leap off the log wouldn’t be a problem for him.
She supposed she would find out.

There was certainly no way that he was about to change back before he had some cover and his clothes within reach, but Nick could occasionally be lazy. He really didn’t think that tonight would be a problem though- he would happily walk to the ends of the earth if Lynnette asked him to, a thought that, while taking him by surprise, was definitely true. He was finding that he would likely agree to almost anything she wanted him to do.
Nick had half a mind to simply run alongside the tree- his particular for wasn’t really made for activities like following Lynnette up the tree- but he quickly decided that he was going to try to match her step for step and bolted up it himself. If he fell he supposed he would learn his lesson. Yeah, right… Since when has something like that been enough to teach me a lesson?

As she heard his claws catch against the rough bark of the toppled tree, she found herself hoping that he wasn’t about to risk hurting himself for the sake of chasing her. She would hate to be responsible for him getting hurt in any way, and the thought turned her stomach a little, so much so that she almost turned and nudged him to go back down, but she had to calm herself, she knew; he was old enough, and intelligent enough, to make his own decisions. He would be fine.
The end of the tree came into sight, and with a push of her hind legs, she propelled herself off, sailing down towards a nice, convenient clearing. She hit the ground running, bending her legs to absorb the impact, and shot off again, quickly checking the way ahead was clear so she could turn her head to look back behind her, to check Nick landed all right…

While Nick was racing along, he was definitely being careful. He really didn’t want to fall and end up breaking something. Like his neck. That would’ve been just his luck, too. Thankfully, his luck was good tonight and he made it to the end of the tree without any incidents. Even his landing was good and he gave a little sigh of relief at that. His pride would have been seriously bruised had he fallen on his face and proven that werewolves could be plenty clumsy.
On the ground again, he was back to being perfectly care free for the time being, bolting off after Lynnette. This was definitely a nice, adrenaline filled night. Now that he was on the ground again and hadn’t hurt himself, things were back to being spectacular.

Should’ve known he could handle it. She gave a little snuffle of a noise, as if chiding herself for doubting Nick, who seemed able to do just about anything; he’d already impressed her several times with his broad knowledge of various topics, after all, so why should she have been sceptical about his agility as a wolf?
Lynnette thought she heard a rabbit or some other kind of wildlife off to her right, and her ear twitched sharply in that direction, but she fought her hunter instincts; she was being chased… that was no time to go bolting after bunnies, or some such. That could wait until later, if they still had any energy left after their speeding around, chasing one another. She wouldn’t want to kill the rabbit… just give it a run for its money, maybe…

Nick really was lucky that he had managed to make it through going up the tree without falling. There had been an instant somewhere in the middle where he really had thought that he was about to go tumbling to the ground; his right hind foot had slipped and he had lost a step. He was convinced that luck alone had kept him on that tree because he probably should have ended up on the ground due to that.
Running as hard as he could, he ignored the animal in the underbrush. Right now, catching up to Lynnette was all that was on his mind. Gaining a bit of ground, he veered slightly so that he could come up beside rather than attempting to tackle her from behind.
That was his mistake. One moment he was running, almost even with Lynnette and the next he was falling, landing with a yelp of surprise and pain as he found himself in a hole.
Standing, he shook himself off and realized that he could put very little pressure on his left front foot. Oh, spectacular... Looking up, he thought he could make the jump. He thought he should be able to at any rate.
Gathering his strength, he made a leap, but came just short of the edge, tumbling back down. Why is there a hole like this out here anyway? It was more of an idle thought than and actual concern as he leapt again, got himself half way out of the hole and scrabbled a bit with his hind feet, trying to ignore the pain in his leg as he tried to get a bit of traction on the wall of the hole. Come on, come on.

The yelp caught her attention instantly, and without wasting even a second, she slammed on the proverbial brakes, and skidded around. Bright eyes blinked. Nick had vanished from behind her. In her reinforced chest, her heart skipped in a panic, and she trotted briskly, low to the ground, back the way she had come. Where had he gone? He had to be around here somewhere, didn’t he? He couldn’t have gone far…
Her nose went low to the ground, like a hunting dog’s, and she realised he had veered off, no doubt to try and catch her by surprise by coming at her from an angle. She followed it briskly, weaving low to the ground, not unlike a lioness on the prowl, and she quickly found the problem. She saw him before she saw the hole, and ran forward, concern shining in her eyes and giving a little pine of worry as she saw his predicament. What moron had made a hole in the middle of the woods?
That didn’t matter. She had very few options here, if she wanted to get Nick out of the — rather deep — hole, and from the looks of his struggle, she didn’t have much time to execute them. She could either change back, and try to heave him up in human form, which could prove problematic with his no-doubt-increased wolfen weight, or… she could hope her other idea wouldn’t hurt him.
She didn’t have time to debate.
Moving quickly, she lunged forward, and with something that wouldn’t have looked uncharacteristic in a mother dog, took hold of Nick’s dark scruff in her mouth, taking extra care not to let her teeth graze. Like real wolves, they possessed the resilient area, which often came under attack in fights, but in their common cousins, also allowed parents to carry their young. Its toughness would hopefully allow Lynnette to tug without hurting him, and she planted her taloned paws into the ground as she pulled.
Please work…

Freaking hunters… Nick knew perfectly well who had made the hole now that he actually thought about it- the idle question had been thought in annoyance before realization had been able to dawn on him- and he even had a name for them. Coyote pitters. It wasn’t something someone saw often, but there were jerks who did it. Basically, it involved digging a big freaking hole, putting a delicate lattice-work of twigs over it, covering that with loose leaves to make it blend in and then waiting. And unsuspecting coyote- or anything weighing more that about five pounds- comes along, steps on it and into the hole they went. Since coyotes were pretty much all over the south west, it didn’t really surprise him that there’d be some moron around trying to pit them. It made them easier to shoot…
When Lynnette appeared, Nick had to admit that he was relieved, even if he was still only halfway out of the hole and ready to die of embarrassment for having fallen in a stupid coyote pit. Anyone who thought that coyotes were found only in the desert was sadly mistaken. They lived up in the hills and anywhere else they could.
Feeling Lynnette take his scruff in her mouth and start pulling, Nick began pushing harder with his back legs and scrabbling more with the front, ignoring the painful left one. The much appreciated assistance was just what he had needed and he was free of the hole again in just moments. Now that that’s over, I think it’s time for a rest…

Lynnette hadn’t even given the origin or reason of the hole a second thought; she was too concerned with getting Nick out of it to bother pondering over what it was for, or who had made it. She would puzzle and growl over it later. For now, she had bigger fish to fry. She felt him helping her with his own attempts to climb out of the hole, and before too long, he had more or less tumbled his way free, and she hovered near to him, breath practically held, almost as if she waited for some other danger to crop up. Her ears were pricked upright, and she was motionless as she paused, checking the area.
Finally, she cast her keen eyes around, confirming that they were alone, and therefore safe. She felt a pressure in her chest dissipate, and she breathed out a sigh of relief.
Her attention went immediately back to Nick, and she hunched down, practically laying right next to him, sniffing at him and giving a pine; ‘are you all right?’. She nudged just behind his ear and jaw, as if checking he was real and not some illusion, and cocked her head worriedly. If he wasn’t okay, then she would feel awful; she’d encouraged him to chase her, after all, and she’d led him into the denser part of the woods. She felt bad enough as it was… he could have broken his neck falling from the tree, and they were lucky there hadn’t been a trap within a trap, such as spikes, or anything else…
The very real thought that her enthusiasm could have killed Nick made her ears drop back in shame, and she put her muzzle between her front paws. For something so gangly and lean, she certainly could tuck herself down into a rather small, somewhat pathetic bundle.
You’re such an idiot…

The ground was, at the moment, Nick’s friend. He simply laid there, letting his breathing get back to normal because it as well as his heart rate had increased a rather large amount during the little situation. His leg sore, but he could deal with that. He’d probably have nothing more serious that a tender left wrist when he changed back to human and he wasn’t going to actually voice that at any point if he could get away with keeping it to himself because he didn’t want Lynnette to worry. The way he saw it, it had been his own carelessness that had ended up with him down in that hole. After all, if he had been paying a little more attention, he might have been able to notice something. Still, if one of them had had to fall into that thing, he was glad it had been him and not Lynnette.
When Lynnette pined and gave him a nudge, Nick thumped his tail on the ground twice in a signal that he was okay. He didn’t want her worrying about him. He was perfectly fine. Sure, a little sore, but fine. It wasn’t anything that wouldn’t be better by the time he dragged himself out of bed in the morning in order to go to work.
When she laid down, so obviously feeling bad about what had happened, it was too much for him. He didn’t want her feeling that way. It had been his choice to chase after her. He had been enjoying himself just as much as she had, so to him, there was absolutely no reason in the world for her to feel bad about what had happened. Getting up and carefully not favoring his sore leg, he gave a little whine and nudged her neck gently.
Come on. It’s okay.
