Had she been in human form, she might have given a weak, slightly shaky smile. Lynnette didn’t know if she could feel any guiltier if she tried, but frankly, she just wanted to forget about it. She didn’t want to think about how much worse it could have been, because that conjured all sorts of horrible things in her head. But why did she always have to jeopardise things? She’d nearly gotten her only friend in her old pack killed because of her refusal to submit… she’d left her mother in that misery—
And then Nick was nudging her. She looked up at him after feeling his muzzle brush her neck, and some of the pessimism ebbed away. His whine made her heart constrict, though she wasn’t sure why. It wasn’t with sadness, and certainly not any other kind of negative sensation… she couldn’t quite understand it.
Slowly, as if calculating her pace and movements so she wouldn’t startle him, she straightened herself again, standing on all fours. Her ears were still tilted back, and her head was dropped down a little, as if in apology. She looked him over, subtly, almost expecting to see some kind of horrible wound, or perhaps even something missing, but catching herself, she chided her own ridiculousness. He was standing, he was breathing, he was telling her it was okay.
He was fine.
She just couldn’t quite believe it through her own relief.

When Lynnette moved to stand up, Nick took a couple of steps back to give her room to do so, but as soon as she was on her feet, he was right back at her side. When he saw the signs of apology, he gave a very soft yip and nuzzled her neck lightly. No need to apologize.
Giving a wag of his tail he swept his ears forward and backed up a couple of steps, looking over his shoulder before looking back to her. Want to keep going? At least, that was what he was trying to ask. He didn’t imagine he was going to be at running at full tilt again tonight, but he could definitely stand walking around for a while if Lynnette wanted to.

Comforted by his nuzzle and reassuring yip, she let her ears rock forward a little more again, pulling them up out of their guilty droop. If Nick forgave her, then she had to stop feeling sorry for herself, like some self-pitying pup. It wasn’t going to get them anywhere, and she would be damned if she dragged down the entire mood of the evening just because she felt responsible. If Nick wanted to move on, then they would.
Simple as that.
Pulling in and letting out a rejuvenating breath, she shook out her coat, and turned herself around to face the direction her companion had ‘nodded’ in. They could definitely keep going, if he was up for it. She half-expected he was a little more sore than he was letting on, but he was older than her, and she didn’t really have any right to tell him to take it easy, no matter how much she really wanted to.

That's more like it. Nick didn't like seeing Lynnette looking as if she felt guilty over something that he felt that she had no reason to feel guilty for, so her coming out of it was more than enough to make him wag his tail happily. He just wanted them to have fun and her feeling guilty over something like him falling in a hole wasn't productive to that.
Nick turned and took a couple of steps in the direction he had indicated, careful not to limp, and stopped to look back to her to see if she was following. The night was still fairly young- as far as he was concerned anyway- and he just wanted them to both enjoy themselves.

She found it stupidly endearing… the tail wagging. It made her wish, once again, that she had a tail, so she could show the same sorts of body language. She had to settle for perked ears and light bounces instead, and muffled noises of acknowledgement and agreement.
Lynnette watched him step ahead of her, studying him discreetly, so when he turned to look at her, she had to pretend she hadn’t been scrutinising his movements, to see if he was at all injured. She blinked, and trotted forward to stand alongside him, giving his side a little encouraging nudge as she joined him. I’m ready. Lead the way. After all, her way had landed him in a hole; she was more than willing to follow him this time.

At Lynnette’s nudge, Nick started off at a fluid lope, finding that it was easy to cover any limp this way. Yes, he was the macho sort who hated to admit to anyone when he was hurting, but this was more than that. Rather than protecting his pride, he was much more concerned with making sure that he didn’t give Lynnette a reason to worry about him. After all, it wasn’t like there was anything she could have done to keep him from landing in that hole. It had been his fault through and through. He should have stayed behind her rather than veering to the side as he had done.
He knew that there likely wasn’t much to be see- trees were trees, after all- but that was perfectly okay with him. Even the soreness wasn’t very likely to bother him. He had superb company and that was all that mattered.

She followed after him at once, coming up alongside him at the casual pace. She trotted lightly at his side, letting her ears and nose take everything in as her eyes tracked ahead down the path. There was wildlife, keeping its distance from the two predators, but other than that, and the moon overhead, they seemed to be alone. Lynnette wasn’t complaining. This was nice.
More than nice, even… she hadn’t done anything like this before, and she was enjoying it even more than she had expected she would, and considering how excited she had felt, that was truly saying something.

He breathed in the scents and listened to the sounds of creatures of the woods. I'm going to have to come back here and chase rabbits sometime. That'd be a nice way to unwind after work. He wouldn't catch the rabbits, of course. Just go chasing them through the underbrush for a while. He would have to make sure to bring it up with Lynnette before he decided to go and invite her along if she thought she might enjoy such an outting. If it didn't seem like her sort of thing, he would have to come alone. It wouldn't be nearly as fun, but he imagined that any rabbits he managed to catch scent of would provide him with plenty of entertainment.
Nothing would compare to what he was currently doing though. He knew that and there was no sense in denying it. He wasn't even interested in trying to deny it.

Her gait, while graceful and easy naturally, had become even more relaxed. It wouldn’t have been altogether difficult to mistake her for a dog being taken for a walk, she was so tranquil. She felt in her element, unrestrained and refreshed, and the hairs down the length of her spine tingled as they started to climb a slow incline; a hill in the wooded landscape. She trotted up it with ease, and when they came to the top, they were rewarded with a small clearing, penetrated by a beam of purely dazzling moonlight.
Lynnette released a little puff of air, in awe, and sat back slowly, head rocked up and back to admire the beautiful sight. She looked curious, and amazed, as if she had never seen anything so wondrous in her life, and she was completely silent as her bright eyes roamed the star-speckled heavens. And save for the peaceful movements of her chest as she breathed, and the odd, subtle twitch of one ear, she was motionless in her study.

Okay, now that's just really nice, Nick thought to himself, taking in the scene before him and sitting down next to Lynnette. He seemed to have almost forgotten what the stars looked like without the bright lights of some city or another drowning them and and, for the first time in a long time, felt rather homesick for England. He had always been able to see the stars there. While there was a lot he had forgotten about that time, he remembered being able to see the stars clearly. The homesickness, however, was over quickly and he was back in the present, enjoying the sight and the company.

The female wolf couldn’t remember the last time she had felt so utterly… comfortable; so at peace and relaxed, not caring or worrying about a thing, her mind blissfully free of thoughts and concerns. Damn, it felt good, and she pulled in a deep, gently refreshing lungful of the open air, free of the smog and density of the city itself.
Lynnette really liked Los Angeles. She wouldn’t have settled in the way she had, had she any doubts or reservations about it. But getting out into ‘her element’ felt so right, and comforting, and it didn’t hurt that she was doing as much with the one male she trusted. She had never, for a second, thought she would trust another male… not after her past, and all the complications and darkness. But Nick was so different, and that was warming, somehow; it reassured her, and made her feel safe.
Without realising what she was doing, she inched sideways, closer to the black-haired creature at her side, and ever-so-gently, leaned against him, feeling the warmth of his body; supportive and strong.

Nick was very much convinced that nothing could make the night better… until Lynnette leaned against him. That alone made the night ten times better than it had been and, once the falling-into-the-hole portion was taken out, the night had already been the best he could remember ever having. Then, when he thought about it, he realized that his best memories all involved Lynnette. He wasn’t surprised, really- he had not had an especially easy five hundred years, though he knew that he really couldn’t complain. Nick was not so dense as to be able to fool himself that he had had an especially hard existence; he knew that there were others who had had far worse times than he had.
Flicking his ear slightly as a mosquito buzzed by, Nick allowed himself to lean very lightly against Lynnette so that they were now supporting each other a bit. He had been stubborn in his years as a werewolf. More appropriately, he had been afraid. That was really why he had never allowed himself to get close to anyone. He had always gone into each new city knowing that he would have to leave eventually in order to keep his secret and had not wanted to make ties that couldn’t be easily severed. Los Angeles had been no different. He had come to the city the plan he always had- find a job, stay until he could no longer hide the fact that he wasn’t aging as human nature said he should be and move on- but Lynnette had made him change his plan. Nick wanted very badly to get to know her better; for the first time, he wanted to make ties with someone and he had no intention of severing them. He would do anything and everything within his power to make sure that he didn’t have to.

When he leaned gently back into her, she gave a little, contented sigh, as if she had been hoping he would do that all along. She had only just realised what she had done, but even with instinct barking at her to back off and give him his space, there was a big part of Lynnette that took too much comfort and reassurance from the proximity to just pull away now. She didn’t want to, more to the point. Regardless of any reservations about going too far, she didn’t want to pull away, and the fact that he apparently didn’t either put her more at ease than she ever would have expected.
She nestled her head to the side, having hunched down enough for it to rest just in the crook between Nick’s neck and shoulder, and gave another sigh as she let the sounds of the woodland wrap around her, and her companion, like a blanket. Smells drifted to her and were then dismissed as harmless, and she looked up at the stars and moon again, wondering if she was the first female in her family to have a moment like this. It had just been her and her mother in the old pack, related, and she highly doubted the woman who had given her life had ever had this kind of comfort and closeness, and for that, she was saddened.
But if she allowed herself to dwell on those thoughts for too long, she knew she would ruin the moment, and the thought of doing that was too intense, so she banished the musings at once, returning herself to the present, fully and firmly.

This is definitely nice. More than nice, actually. I wish I could make time slow down so we could stay like this longer. Thoughts like that were completely new to Nick, but so was allowing himself to get attached to someone; he was finding that he rather liked these new experiences.
Not even thinking about what he was doing, he tilted his slightly so that it was resting against Lynnette’s and allowed is eyes to scan the heavens. Everything in the world- at least, his world- seemed right. Even the soreness from his fall was forgotten about in favor of the moment. He was enjoying himself more than he had ever thought he ever could and wanted to hold onto this feeling for as long as he possibly could. He knew that the moment would end far too quickly for his liking, no matter how long they stayed as they were, and he had every intention of thoroughly enjoying himself- which he most certainly was- for as long as he could.

The female werewolf at his side, comfortably nestled against him, was fighting off a sudden weariness, as if the run had taken all the energy out of her without warning. Now that she had stopped, and made herself comfortable, she didn’t feel like moving, and it was tempting to curl up next to him right there and just… sleep.
But she couldn’t. She knew that. More to the point, she shouldn’t. The utter relaxation that would come with falling asleep in wolf form would most likely find her human again when she woke, and frankly, she could live without that kind of awkward embarrassment. She, as a natural-born werewolf, wasn’t at all ashamed of her body in its human form, but with Nick, it held the potential to be… less than casual.
And she wasn’t even sure what her brain meant by that.
