He heard the door to the basement open, the soft noise sounding unnaturally loud and jarring to his ears. Instantly his heart rate sped up, fear bubbling up in him. The sound meant one thing and one thing only. The monster in the dark was back. Deiniol blinked a few times, trying to will his sleep fogged brain to wake up. He was going to need all his wits about him, because Denny knew saying the wrong thing or reacting in the wrong way would be disastrous. He just wasn’t sure what the wrong way would be.
The young man was consciously aware of his slightly wrinkled outfit, the suit not having been made to be slept in or worn for such a length of time. Combined with the blood, sweat and dirt on him, Denny didn’t feel like himself at all.
Denny flinched slightly at the sound of her sharp footsteps descending down the stairs, his eyes lowered to the floor, unable to bring himself to look up at her. He didn’t want to see her and he didn’t want to know what – if anything – she had with him. All he wanted was to wake up in his own bed and realise this had all been a weird and disturbing dream.

Yelena didn't look at him as she entered. She set the bowl of warm water on the centre of the table and the cloth next to it, neatly folded and perpendicular to the edge of the table. She ran her fingers over it for a moment and then turned her pale eyes to him at last. She ran her finger along the rim of the basin, just watching him for at least a couple of quiet, consecutive minutes before she picked up the cloth and dipped it into the water. Every move was precise and measured and if it hadn't been for the totally apathetic, indifferent expression she worse she might have looked purposeful.
Ringing the cloth out as she walked, the brunette approached Deiniol, snatching a third chair with her free hand from the shadows as she went. She set it opposite him and lowered herself into it. "Good morning." She drawled, crossing her legs between his.

Deiniol didn’t know what to think when he finally looked up and spotted Yelena and the items in her hands. He wasn’t sure what to make of the bowl of water and cloth, watching silently as she dipped it in the water and then carefully rung it out. He took in all the tiny details, her outfit and everything he could in case it was knowledge he could use in the future.
He blinked a few times as she sat in front of him, her legs crossed and in between his. A very faint blush of embarrassment tinged his cheeks for a few moments as he tried to will his heartbeat under control before replying to her greeting, recognising how bizarre this whole situation was. “Good morning Yelena,” Denny answered, deciding remaining polite would be best for now at least. It was something he could cling to.

Yelena smiled real pleasure behind her eyes. He was certainly the smartest she'd had in a while; he knew to answer her back, to use her name, since she had given it to him. It was her real one at that, not an alias. For years she'd had men who bombarded her with questions and foul language. Not that she didn't like swearing, she was indifferent to it at best, but when it came to situations such as this she definitely preferred the more gentlemanly Deiniol.
She didn't speak at first, she leant forwards, her smile fading just slightly as she took his jaw in one hand and with the other, holding the cloth, she started to clean the dirt and grime off him. "I like to start each day with a clean slate..." she told him softly, meeting his eyes a moment after the words tumbled form her mouth.

If anything, the smile was creeper than the expression of indifference, to Denny at least. It implied that Yelena was in a good mood, that she had something planned that would make her happy and he knew that anything that made her happy was unlikely to make him happy. In fact, it was almost guaranteed to make him very unhappy.
Denny had managed to hold himself still as she touched him, and still as she began to clean the dirt – part of him was almost relived she was cleaning his face, no matter how demeaning it was. A clean face would go a long way to making him feel more like himself. At her words though, her eyes meeting his, Denny had been unable to help the small flinch, automatically pulling his jaw away from her. He froze mid-action, every part of him screaming to restore self-control. Denny remained half free of her grip, trying to force down the sudden pounding of his heart.

He recoiled from her and Yelena, perhaps oddly to him, didn't react all that adversely. She blinked then reasserted her hold on him, her eyes telling him in no uncertain terms that he didn't want to do that again. Her temper only lasted so long and pissing her off so early in the day was not a good idea, still the fact that he had stopped himself half way was promising, and she herself had never had all that much luck with self restraint making it that much more intriguing to her.
"Tell me," she started as she continued to clean his face, "about your morning routine, Deiniol. How do you take your coffee? Or do you prefer tea? Do you read the newspaper... feed the cat...? I am endlessly curious about your life up to now."

“Tea,” he told her softly, relived that she hadn’t carried through on her threat to make him wish he had never been born if he misbehaved. Deiniol had briefly considered lying to her, but he wasn’t any good at it and anyway, he didn’t see the point. Giving her information about himself would give her more power over him in a mental respect but right now he preferred that over pain. “Earl Grey, brewed for two and a half minutes, slice of lemon in the mornings.” For the rest of the day he drank normal tea that he had imported from home – a Welsh brand – but she hadn’t asked about that.
The young man never drank coffee, it wasn’t proper and if there was one thing he loved, it was civility. Stable routine which he repeated over and over again and while some might find it boring, he found it comforting. “I read the paper, wash, dress, go to work.” All very boring really and he was acutely aware of that as he spoke. Normally he wouldn’t care but he had a feeling she would be unpleasant if she was bored with him and so he dreaded the moment when she found out just how dull a person he really was.

"Earl Grey, slice of lemon, two and a half minutes." Yelena repeated to herself, as if running that through her mind, thinking over the precision of his answer and deciding, yes he was telling her the truth. That was a good star; a very good start. She was asking in part because she was going to feed him, and she wasn't so bestial as to give him bread crusts. As cruel as Yelena could be, as frankly malicious and sadistic she could also be thoughtful and considerate. The personality traits were ones she had not exercised for years, she didn't bother to be considerate towards people like Thomas, people who were like blocks of stone for her to sculpt into, terrorize and degrade...
Of course, there would be pain in Denny's future but tempered with her bizarre brand of 'kindness'. Yelena was an expert torturer and she knew that the two techniques, when used correctly, when the timing was right, could do more damage than they could when they stood alone. So she nodded and allowed a ghost of a smile, "Do you live alone?" she asked.

Deiniol blinked a few times at her question before lowering his eyes, angling his view away from her and towards the floor, although he could still see part of her side out of the corner of his eye and beyond that the stiff corpse of Thomas. That had been a question he had been hoping she wouldn’t ask, because he hadn’t wanted to admit the truth, to all but say that there was nobody on this side of the Atlantic – now anyway – that would be particularly concerned about his disappearance. He knew most of the people from the Church and was friendly with some of them, but not to the highest level.
“Yes,” he muttered quietly, forcing the word past stiff lips. It was still strange for him to say that anyway, to live alone. His whole life he had lived in a house full of noise and people and although he mostly claimed to be uncomfortable by the sheer intensity of people, they had been his family and Deiniol had grown… accustomed to it.

Yelena tilted her head to an angle and watched Deiniol for a moment, her mouth down turned in its default 'bored' expression, not really a reaction to his answer, just her normal, everyday look. She didn't have much of an opinion on whether she would have preferred him say that he had a brother, or sister, girlfriend or wife; she was merely testing the water, what she had to work with. No one to threaten for emotional torment; that would have to be achieved another way and the vampire did not doubt that she would come up with something.
She smirked coolly, "Not pets?" she asked, only semi serious.

If Yelena wasn’t holding his chin in place, Deiniol would have just shaken his head at her question. He would have much preferred to answer without speaking, wanting to give away as little as possible but her grip made it impossible. “No pets,” he told her, keeping his eyes lowered to the floor. At home in Wales, the house had always been full of animals of one kind or another and it had taken a while for him to get used to an empty flat.
The advantage however was he didn’t have to worry about pet hairs getting all over his suits. It had saved him time in brushing his suits down and that had almost made up for the brief stints of feeling alone. His family was only a phone call away any- Deiniol cut that thought off, not wanting to dwell on his family. Or the thought that he might never speak to them again.

With a noise of agreement, Yelena sat back in her chair slightly and regarded him from that position, her hands in her lap and the cloth hanging over her knee, carefully so as not to get any of the muck she had cleaned off his face onto her dress.
"Tell me about your family." She commanded. She was keen to know what sort of relationship he had with his relatives, and while she was sure she could make him tell her what she wanted to sometimes it was much more satisfying to have her subject talk freely before she got to work. There was something in the act of surrendering information freely that made it much sweeter if she could turn it back on them later; conflicting emotions and inward anger at having given something up freely... Yelena would add incentive if she had to but for now she simply watched him quietly.

Deiniol inwardly sighed in relief as Yelena finally pulled back from him, her cold fingers dropping from his face. Even though she had washed it clean, he wanted nothing more than to scrub at his face until the ghostly feel of her touch was completely wiped away.
“My… family?” Denny stammered, eyes darting up to look at her for a second in confusion before he looked away again, swallowing nervously as he did so. Putting aside the fact that the woman – vampire – in front of him was completely insane and evil, putting aside the fact that he didn’t want to tell her anything about them in case she somehow took it into her head to hurt them – even though they were thankfully in Wales and so far, far away – the question was just too board for him to answer anyway. He needed a more detailed question, one that could be answered as shortly and succinctly as possible. It was just the way he worked.
“What… what exactly about my family?”

The smile was discontented at best and Yelena settled back in the chair even more, and elbow resting on the top of the back rest as she regarded him, "Anything that you feel is pertinent."
The question had made him uncomfortable; good. She wasn't going to narrow the field of answers for him and make him get too comfortable. She'd cleaned him, she was going to feed and water him and then she was going to have her fun. She made a mental note to put a bucket down by the chair. Some of her favourite pastimes had been known to make the subjects they were used upon physically ill and she was not in the business of cleaning up after them to that degree.

Anything he felt was pertinent? He still failed to see how his family had anything to do with his current situation, with Yelena and if he had been a slightly braver person he would have told her so. After all she had yet to hurt him, to subdue him. Denny however was a realist and knew just because there was no pain now, didn’t mean such a state of affairs would last much longer.
“Mother, Father, four siblings. They don’t live in America. All Catholics,” he stated blandly, falling back onto his best professional voice. Compacting everything down to a few words and yet still giving her what he hoped would be enough. As far as he was concerned just telling her they were not here and so safe from her was pertinent enough.
