Content to leave the pack to their own devices — and without his ‘supervision’ for however long he could get some peace and quiet — and take care of some things he thought might need his attention, Cole Stanton was currently in the large room he shared with his currently-absent mate. Where she was, he didn’t know, but he supposed she would show herself when she thought the time was right, and he needn’t worry. Dia, after all, was more than capable, and she rarely gave him a genuine reason to worry.
Walking out of the bathroom adjacent to the bedroom itself, he tugged the white towel off his head after giving it one last vigorous rub, and tossed it over the back of the desk chair, no doubt to be used against him later if he didn’t tidy up after himself. Waking the room’s laptop from its hibernation-mode, he checked the email account without sitting down, and, upon finding it empty, left the machine to power down on its own once again. Electricity bills for an old hotel were rather near the bottom of his priority list, even if they did always get paid; it wasn’t as if one or two of the others would ever let it slip his mind anyway. Not that it ever did. Usually.

Cole had been in the middle of rummaging through the closet when the phone on the wall near the door started ringing. Reaching around the corner of the room, he grabbed it, relying on its long, flexible cord to extend enough for him to balance it in the crook of his neck, against his shoulder, while he talked.
The voice was recognisable at once, and instinctively, a wave of relief rushed through him, quickly dissipating to be replaced by the calm he had long ago trained himself to carry.
“Heidi; welcome back. Any problems? Good…” He chuckled at her offer of food, and realised his stomach actually rumbled gently at that; he’d missed lunch, too busy not thinking about it, as usual… as odd as that sounded. “Be down in a few. Thanks.” And then he reached around and hung up, pulling a comfortable — and naturally, practical — black sweater from the closet, pulling it over his head. He loosely pushed the sleeves up just past his elbows, exposing the very tips of his black tattoos on his arms, and then, after slipping on his boots and dragging his hands through his hair just once, headed out of the room.

Continued from: The Dining Room with Cole[/i]
As soon as she and Cole were in their room, Dia reached to the back of her head, deftly pulling the tie from her hair. After releasing her somewhat wavy tresses from the ponytail they had been in, she instinctively ran her fingers through to sort them back out a bit. While she really much preferred to let it fall unrestricted, there were certain times, such as when training, that it was more convenient to have it out of the way.
At the moment she very much wanted to simply take a shower, but first things first. Moving to her mate she leaned up, kissing him briefly before pulling away with something of a smirk.
“Marion was here, right?” It was only the natural conclusion after knowing whatever had taken Cole out of the dining room had been ‘legal matters’. That and the fact that after simply being attentive, Dia had smelled the human nearby, much as her mate had before going off to the lobby.

The kiss brought something of a boyish, pleased smirk to Cole's face, and he regarded her appreciatively as always; affectionate, but with a hint of mischief he always had to keep under control, especially when there were things to dicuss, and matters at hand.
"Yeah, she was." Cole nodded. "You remember me telling you about that werewolf who got arrested? Marion handled the case, and it turns out they won. Which reminds me... we have to pay her." He smiled, laughing faintly; he'd left the paper in his study, but he knew where it was, exactly, and would tend to it a little bit later. "Anyway... Mara - that's the werewolf's name - is a photographer, and she has a show opening in the gallery soon. So, with full moon coming up, I figured we should bring her into the pack, if we can." He said nothing else, waiting for her opinions on the matter.

She smiled at him, a somewhat softer smile than before in the dining room. It was true that the pack’s Alphas were more affectionate with one another in closed quarters. Not that they weren’t so during other times, just not overly so while out amongst the pack.
“I’m sure Marion will let us know if she went unpaid for too long,” she said with a slight laugh before nodding. “And yeah, I remember. The one arrested for the bar fight. Until we know how much control she has over her changes, if any, it would definitely be better to have her here where we could keep an eye on her.” Especially when they took into account the fact that even after one could control the change, in many cases the full moon still had its effects, even if they were still in human form. And having someone in that state possibly poised to run about the city would certainly not do them any help in maintaining their discreet presence.
“Did Marion mention how stable she seems?” Because yes, they would help others of their kind but not to the detriment of their own pack, and beyond that it would be a good factor to help gauge how restrained she might have to be during the full moon.

There were many things that made a great Alpha, and biased or otherwise, Cole never had to remind himself that Dia had them all, in one form or another, without question. And it wasn’t just that he loved her, and was devoted to her; that wasn’t why he would defend her rightfulness to the position if it ever came under scrutiny — not that it would — but because he genuinely knew she was the best for the job. He couldn’t imagine having anyone else by his side in leadership.
“She’s only been a wolf about a year, but Marion said that if we can earn her trust… she’ll definitely be an asset to us.” He regarded Dia thoughtfully, with a content smile just hinting at the corner of his mouth. “Which, of course, is something else that makes me think the sooner we can earn that trust, the better.” Pausing for a moment, he decided there was no time like the present; “I want to meet with her myself… see how she reacts to me, even before she knows just who I am. If nothing else, it’ll help me gauge how stable she really is.”

Likewise, nor could Dia imagine anyone in Cole’s place. She had supported his rises to Beta and then Alpha not only because of her own feelings for him but because it was something he more than deserved and had earned. Cole had proven his dedication for not only her but the pack as a whole more times than any of them could count, really.
She nodded at the further details on Mara. “Definitely needs to be watched, then. Who knows what would end up happening if she isn’t? That’s a risk I don’t think we should take.” A smile graced her lips. “And if she’ll be a benefit to the pack, it’s certainly worth the investigation. You know I trust Marion.”
Dia’s expression scrunched some in consideration with the news about the gallery, a look that was soon teamed with a slight smirk. “That is one easy way to tell, now isn’t it? A gallery opening could be fun. You won’t be going alone, of course?” Not that Dia doubted Cole’s ability to look after himself but that’s part of what a pack was for- to doubly look out for one another, leaders included. And going into an unknown situation- well Dia knew her mind would certainly be at ease to know that her mate had sufficient back-up should he need it.

“I trust Marion too…” He smiled, clearly teasing as he said, “As much as anyone can trust a lawyer anyway.” He chuckled, cocking his head as he considered what she had been saying. He noted her expression when he mentioned the gallery, and he laughed quietly at that, unable to help himself. “Of course I won’t. You know for a fact Kyle won’t let me out the door without playing my shadow, and I’m sure I can ‘convince’ a few of the others to come along.”
Looking into Dia’s eyes, he continued, “I explained to Heidi how I think no other ‘top dogs’ should come along.” He smirked at his own poor terminology. “I don’t wanna intimidate her, or push her away by overwhelming her. She’ll probably be able to sense that sort of thing, new-wolf or not.” Cole knew Dia would understand that reasoning. He almost felt bad for coming to that conclusion himself though — Heidi had seemed excited about the potential of accompanying the group.

Dia laughed at the mention of the younger werewolf, knowing Cole’s words were more than true. “You know, there are days when I’m a bit surprised Kyle hasn’t made himself an official appendage of yours.” She paused, giving a slight smirk. “Or maybe he just hasn’t gotten around to it yet.”
Getting back to the matter at hand she nodded. “No, you’re right, not all of us should go. The others definitely need to stay here with the pack.” Aside from bringing in a new, potentially advantageous member, there were the currents to be considered, to her they always would come first. That’s not to say that Dia wouldn’t have liked the outing herself as well, but of course there were other things to be considered before recreation. “It’s probably a good idea to not overwhelm her too much.” Honestly she would be truly at ease if one of the other ‘top dogs’ did go along, but she realized it was simply her inherent concern for her mate trying to take precedence.

“There are certain places,” Cole reminded his mate with a cheeky grin, “I wouldn’t let Kyle follow me to, impending doom or otherwise.” He met her gaze meaningfully there, perhaps not needing to, given their current location and proximity. Besides, she knew him well enough by now to know that kind of insinuation when she heard it, obvious mischief aside.
Cole could hear her reluctance in her tone, but knew better than to call her on it. It would only earn him one of her ‘looks’ — which he supposed every man, werewolf or not, had experienced at one point or other in any given relationship — and to be frank, he was rather wary about earning those. It was only natural for her to be concerned, and it almost made him smile to realise that that was as strong a feeling in both of them now as it had been in the beginning. Tilting her face up to his fully, he said to her, “We can always go to the gallery after we’ve introduced her to the pack… take in the sights.” He smiled with less mischief this time, but still attempting to please her somehow, whilst making a genuine offer.

She smiled broadly at Cole with a look of feigned surprise before returning the gaze, not at all missing the insinuation. “Good to know. Because if not, I’d be very upset with the both of you.”
If anything, over time Dia’s feelings for her mate had only gotten stronger. Something she supposed they should defiantly be grateful for: the years bringing them closer instead of pulling them apart. To be truthful, by this point it was hard to remember a time when they hadn’t at least been in each other’s company, whether or not officially as mates. Looking into his eyes, she nodded slightly, very clear she was in agreement, and as always, finding it quite endearing that he made the effort to ensure she was happy.
“That would be nice.” She paused, unsuccessfully biting back a smirk. “You really should take me out more, you know?” A statement Dia couldn’t even get out without laughing a bit. She was by no means a superficial woman in any way, but the accusation still amused her.

“The burdens of being an Alpha,” he sighed, ‘dramatically’, and granted her a warm smile, sincere rather than devious or teasing, before he bowed down and kissed her, no matter how briefly. He let the contact linger for a few moments before pulling back, saying as he did so, “I’d say ‘remember when things were simpler’… but that would make me feel old.” Now he smirked. “And I don’t like feeling old.”
Dia’s affection for him was returned equally, of course; the strong feelings she had for him were mirrored and reciprocated clearly through his words and actions around her, and even when he wasn’t in her company. It was no secret that they were deeply devoted to one another; every single wolf in the pack knew how long their Alphas had been together, if only in companionship before becoming mates, and as such, their loyalty to one another had never been questioned, or put under scrutiny.

Dia smiled, leaning her forehead against his briefly as they kept contact after the kiss. “Of course not. Because if you feel that way, how should I feel?” While around the same age numberwise she was a bit younger than her mate, but it wasn’t really as if those few years mattered in terms of a werewolf lifespan. It gave an entirely new perspective on things according to age, really, especially in comparison to human standards.
She and Cole’s bond together was undeniably strong. A point that was also beneficial to the pack, since a pack’s basis, really, came from its Alphas unity and their bond. So really, their devotion only helped to further cohere the pack, beyond the obvious benefits to the mating pair.

“You’ll always be younger than me, if that helps.” While stating the obvious, he was merely doing what he did best, and that was trying to both keep his mate happy while perhaps making her laugh at the same time, both triumphs he enjoyed immensely when he succeeded. And it was true; a human’s lifespan, to a werewolf, was more or less… nothing. It was a short stretch of time, which, with a werewolf, could be multiplied extravagantly before it was considered a significant lifetime.
One thing Cole had always had hopes for with their pack, had been for the bond, and strength, not to mention the loyalty and devotion it now displayed, in its members, no matter their gender, age or experience. They surrounded one another with trust and respect, as well as a protective atmosphere that was admirable. Cole had seen it with his parents, and the Alphas above them when the male had been in control of his faculties, before he had been challenged… by Cole himself. That leadership, before it had been corrupted by death or madness, had inspired him, and driven him to achieve it while he and his own mate were responsible for such a pack. To know, with confidence, that they had achieved it… well, to say that it made Cole exceedingly comfortable and proud was rather an understatement.

The stability of their pack was definitely a point of note to be proud of. Though never completely faded, the state had certainly wavered over the years as leadership altered and changed, and now seemed quite enduring. All in all Dia could look back on thing now knowing that her parents had been extremely lucky in the pack they had.
“How nice of you to point out.” Not that it bothered her in the least. As pointed out it was a point of note that didn’t really matter for them, being werewolves. And while such concerns simply seemed to be inherent for most women, well, after a certain amount of time such concerns simply invalidated themselves. That is, if they had been there in the first place. She laughed slightly. “And keep in mind you were the one to say that, not me.” Her fingers, having been idle long enough, moved to find his and poised to link but for the moment she was satisfied with the simple touch, her thumb moving back and forth across the palm of his hand.
