“Crash and burn?” Nenet suggested lightly, shrugging her shoulders as she spoke. She had no plans to ever let Seth be without her – those few years without him had been the worst of her life and she refused to let anything even remotely like that happen again. Even if those years had simply been her without Seth, and nothing of the rest they would have been the worst.
“I always have good points,” she added modestly, resisting the urge to flick her hair back over her shoulder in a parody of arrogance, but only just. Nenet settled for simply folding her hands in her lap, watching as he hunted for clothes. She hoped his outfit today would at least match – she knew he didn’t hold fashion in quite the same high regard as she did – otherwise she would be forced to roll her eyes at him. Or something equally as damning. Nenet needed to think about it.

“Probably,” he agreed, looking back at her again, genuinely in agreement despite his smile. After that rocky patch in their past, he had vowed to never be more than a few rooms away from her, if he could help it. Whenever he was ‘recruited’ into helping the fighters with his archery, he hated leaving the hotel, but it was his duty to the pack, if he could provide a service. His biggest obligation was to the female not ten feet from him, but he owed the pack for letting him and Nenet join.
“Another good point,” he said to her with a grin as he pulled himself out of his closet with a pair of dark jeans and a shirt. He held up the latter for her inspection. “Well, milady… does it meet with your approval?” He didn’t like ‘showing her up’; she always put what had to be an exhausting amount of effort into her outfits at least, though Seth had, for a long time believed it was some kind of art form, and she could just whisk it all together in the time it took him to fall out of bed.

She would never reveal to Seth jus how worried she was whenever he went out with the fighters. During those times she would wait on the roof, her figure obscured from any eyes on the ground by the stone work. Nenet would stand there and watch for his return without fail, no matter the weather, the time or how long it took for him to return. As soon as she was reassured that he was returning unharmed she would return to the inside of the hotel to freshen up before seeking out Seth – or letting him seek her out.
“Hmm… it passes,” Nenet replied seriously, nodding in approval at the choice of clothing. Sometimes she worried that she was perhaps too over bearing in their friendship, if Seth went out of his way to make sure that things like his clothing fell into line with her wishes. Nenet knew that if things were reversed she would do the same, even sacrificing her perfect outfits if he wanted – but the fact is such an occurrence never happened.

Seth chuckled lightly, youthfully, as she approved of the shirt, and he headed towards his bathroom to change out of his sleeping attire. He left the door open ajar after stepping inside, pulling off his shirt, talking to her as he did so, “So what are the plans for today?” She would hear him, even if he hadn’t raised his voice. Her sensitive hearing would catch the words through the partition between the two rooms.
The male of the pair was well aware of Nenet’s vigils whenever he went out with the fighters, and he knew better than to try and dissuade her from them. It would have been useless had their positions been reversed, and so, Seth knew it wasn’t even worth trying; he based a lot of his judgements on that… what would happen if everything was the other way around?

“Well, I was thinking… breakfast, lazing around the hotel, lunch, taking over the world, afternoon tea, nap, dinner, removing all resistance groups, bed,” Nenet remarked dryly, her own brand of humour slipping out as it was wont to do when in the presence of Seth and Seth alone. Around other people she tended to reign in the already restricted sense of humour so that it was hardly noticeable.
“Might try and fit some time in creating a nice throne room if I have the chance. I’d need somewhere to receive my loyal and cowed subjects,” she added, smiling slightly and lightly stroking the top of the covers she was sitting on. They smelt of Seth and she automatically found herself gaining comfort from that simple fact. The whole room smelt like him, and she was in the centre of it all, being protected.

Seth couldn’t help but smile, and yet, he managed to hold in his laugh, enthusiastic about going along with the little game. His little games with Nenet were treasured after all, no matter how often they came about, and he wanted to cherish each one, no matter how silly or short-lived. “Ah, the throne room’s important. Do I get a cushion in the corner, or can I have my own chair?”
Emerging from the bathroom fully dressed, he set his bedclothes, folded as they were, just on one of his pillows. Setting his hands on his hips, he looked at Nenet, freshly-shaved — or rather trimmed, considering he actually ‘boasted’ facial hair intentionally — and ‘groomed’… or rather, as ‘groomed’ as Seth Altham got in his day-to-day life. In other words, he was less of a mess, and what he hoped passed as presentable. “But, seating arrangements aside, good plan… um… I’m not allowed to call you Batwoman, am I?”

“In the corner? Why would I put you in the corner?” Nenet managed to sound honestly surprised as she spoke, allowing a visible smile to curl onto her lips, one she was even willing to let Seth see. “You get a cushion right by my throne. Going to need my personal bodyguard close by after all…”
He did indeed pass a presentable, Seth having his own brand of style that seemed more acceptable on him than it did on anyone else Nenet knew. That didn’t mean she was going to let him get away with that comment however.
Nenet rose from her seated spot on his bed, all but stalking towards him as she considered the most effective way of answering his ridiculous question. Batwoman indeed. She stopped in front of him, head tilted to the side before slowly lifting a hand and flicking him on the cheek. “Not in this lifetime brat.”

“Oh, so I’m your bodyguard now? Huh.” He stood there, hands akimbo, brow furrowed and lips formed into a thin line as he apparently thought the idea over in his head, turning it this way and that, inspecting it. “Ah well, at least I get a cushion. Hey, maybe a beanbag chair, if I behave?” Seth grinned hopefully at her, moving forward a little with the intention of leaning his hands down on the mattress so he could look to her face more closely, so she would be able to see the amusement in his eyes as he chuckled.
Of course, she cut him off by rising and stalking towards him, and he let slip a small ‘eep’. The flick earned a little swat with his hands, and a suitably ruffled expression. “Ow, okay, yeah, not necessary, Princess.” Seth rubbed at the side of his face, managing to look forlorn and even wounded. “My poor, unprepared face. What did it ever do to you, hmm?”

Her hands rested on her hips, Nenet adopting a suitably disdainful expression as she watched Seth pull a wounded look. She wasn’t buying it, and even if she felt a little weak against his sad expression, that was no reason to let him know that. “It was very necessary you little Brat. I do not look like… Batwoman.” She stared at him a little longer before having to turn away, unable to keep up her stern and imposing expression when faced with puppy dog Seth.
“You’re not getting a beanbag chair now. Unless you make it up to me.” Nenet grumbled back at him, her almost angry tone contrasting the new expression on her face. Sometimes Seth could be so childish and he always managed to pull her down with him, for a time at least. She resolutely ignored the fact that in this case at least, it had been she who had started this game, not him.

“That’s why I said I’m not allowed!” he protested, not unlike a child who had been reprimanded for something highly unfair and not his fault. He dropped his hand from his face, still looking somewhat like a kicked puppy. “I was trying to think of a more suitable female superhero before you started with the…” He made a waving gesture. “Flicking.” Seth wrinkled his nose, and wiped at his face one last time, as if it still stung, when he had barely even felt anything at all, other than the initial impact. Now, it felt perfectly fine. He was just milking it…
“Unless, of course,” he began, sounding pensive, “we invent a superhero title for you. That way, it’s all yours and you can’t take offence, and you can’t flick me for using it.” He padded forward, coming up beside her, biting his bottom lip almost hopefully once again, brows slightly raised, just waiting for her to either ‘pounce’ upon the idea or tell him he was being utterly ridiculous.

The flick had been gentle, even for werewolf standards, which was one of the few reasons in which Nenet knew that Seth was just milking it in a bid to make her feel guilty, to agree to his next ridiculous idea, no matter how silly it was. She was stronger than that. On the other hand, the sight of him biting his lip which she could see out of the corner of her eye was very endearing and she could feel her stony strong resolve weakening.
“Depending on the name…” Nenet started, matching his pensive tone as best she could, finger lightly tapping against her deep red lips in thought, “If it’s a good name then you can have your beanbag chair after all. But only if it isn’t demeaning… and I don’t have to wear a stupid costume. I can’t promise I won’t flick you though. I like flicking you.”

Seth nodded, the action swift and reassuring. “Oh, it’ll be a good name, all right. Don’t doubt my mad skills,” he said to her, grinning like a child. “I won’t rush into it though. Concocting a name of the right calibre will take time; you can’t rush perfection.” His blue eyes had narrowed as he spoke, and one hand was at his chin as he paced, as if the cogs were already whirring madly inside his head. Half of the fun was in the ‘act’, after all, and he liked to put his all into the process.
“It won’t be cheesy, or demeaning, and no stupid costumes… right, okay.” Seth turned to her, nodding emphatically again. “And we’ll compromise. I come up with this brilliant superhero name for you, and you limit the flicking to… oh, say once a day, maybe.” After a pause, he added, “I think I can live with once a day. Oh, and not always the face.” He pointed in her direction, expression determined.

A single, low bark of laughter slipped free from her before she could control and contain it, revealing just how amused she really was at the whole thing. Nenet didn’t even close herself off mentally and physically as she was liable to do if her ice demeanour was broken by something as major as a laugh. For a few moments at least, she was the more open wolf she had once been, shaking her head at her friend’s antics.
“One flick a day, not always at the face. Sometimes in the stomach or the arm. What about hair ruffling? I still have unlimited access to that correct? I think I would have to retract this agreement if I lost that…”

“Well… okay, okay, hair ruffling is still fine. That still gets the green light.” He even gave a somewhat cheesy, albeit brief thumbs-up to go along with his agreement, and then laughed at himself, hands going to his waist again to perch on his hips. For a moment, he was quiet, and then his eyes met hers, and he smiled. He had made her laugh, and in Seth’s book, that was a job well done, and quickly too; a personal best, even, given how long she had been in his room.
“So, superhero name pending… are we waiting for the Breakfast Madness to taper off before we venture down and even attempt to get non-sugary breakfast foods?” Seth looked inquisitive, almost. “Then, after that, we can get right to those plans of yours.” His nod was slow and decisive. “Well, wait, taking over the world came after lunch, that’s right. I believe lazing came first. Works for me.”

Nenet shook her head yet again – she seemed to shake her head a lot in fake disgust and disapproval when around Seth – at the cheesy thumbs-up, refusing to allow another laugh to bubble out. She didn’t know why, but she felt more relaxed, content and almost truly happy this morning. Perhaps it was the moon, perhaps it was the slight ego boost she always received at seeing Seth so happy to be in her company but whatever it was, it made her feel less stiff. For a time at least.
“How will we know when the Breakfast Madness tapers off?” She asked, answering his question with one of her. She had come up with the – admittedly silly – plan of action for the day and in her mind that meant Seth was supposed to work out the little details. She would probably regret leaving it to him after a while; Nenet fully believed that Seth got distracted by the smallest things when they weren’t in danger. He was one of the most focused people she had ever known should danger appear.
“Unfortunately my superhero powers do not extend to being able to tell when the kitchen is safe to enter.”
