“Curses,” Seth mumbled, crossing his arms over his chest and adopting a pensive expression once again. “We need some kind of foolproof technique… some way of knowing when it’s all come to some kind of dramatic close. It’s too dangerous to get too close… we’ll be spotted and undoubtedly roped into whatever hair-brained schemes they’re concocting or carrying out.”
In Seth’s mind, it all made perfect sense, and because of how well she knew him, it was probably completely understandable to Nenet as well. Anyone listening in might think the male werewolf of the pair was completely off his rocker, which, some days, wasn’t far from the truth, he supposed, given that he enjoyed walking around on his hands — though in his defence, he wasn’t alone in that hobby.

“Sometimes I worry that I’m supposed to be the brains of this operation… and heaven help us if that’s the case, because that means you’re the looks,” Nenet told him lightly. She thought for a few moments, half tempted to voice her ridiculous idea – but if she did, Seth was bound to try and go through with it, if only to see if it could be done. And she didn’t really want him to dangle out of a window.
Most of the time anyway.
“Maybe if we go to the room directly above the kitchen?” Nenet suggested, going for her more sane idea, acting as if this was a deadly serious mission. “We should be able to hear a little of what is going on and if there is something crazy, we’d know.”

Seth beamed brightly. “Well, Princess, of course you’re the brains. We all know I’m definitely not, because… well, I fall out of bed every day. If that’s not a testament to my place as the brawn, I don’t know what is. And… we can both be the looks, how about that?” His smirk was playful, the male of the pair enjoying the light-hearted banter very much. He knew he was blessed; Nenet only acted so carefree around him, and him alone, and with her past, he couldn’t blame her, but truly, nothing would make him happier than to hear her laugh with some of the others… but he wasn’t one to push, and so long as he could make her happy, then that was enough for him.
Holding a finger aloft, he announced, “Aha! Very wise.” The finger pointed in Nenet’s direction, and he smiled triumphantly. “I can listen through the floor. Brilliant, my friend, brilliant!”

“I agree that you falling out of your bed is a testament to you not being the brains, but it doesn’t prove your place as the brawn. Unless you make dents in the floor every time you do it…” Nenet trailed off and moved her head slightly, as if trying to get a better view of the floor around Seth’s bed and judge for herself how much ‘brawn’ he really possessed. Nenet didn’t know how much longer her good mood would last before it went but she was determined to enjoy it for as long as it remained. For as long as she and Seth were alone.
“I thought we had already established my brilliance?” she asked dryly, eyes following the digit as he waved it around. “So long as you don’t get dirty listening through the floor of course. We’d have to think of something else if it’s a dirty floor.”

Seth’s eyes automatically followed hers around the edges of his bed as she searched for dents that she obviously wouldn’t find. “Okay, so I’m a little on the scrawny side, but nobody wants a chunky-Seth, do they?” He waved his hand dismissively, as if such an idea were preposterous and highly unappealing. He actually doubted he could put on weight; werewolf metabolism aside, he had something of a bottomless pit for a stomach, and his waistline never seemed to shift in either direction. If he were a vain individual, this news might have pleased him, but as it was, he was characteristically indifferent about it.
Retracting the wagging finger, he nodded his head thoughtfully. “Maybe,” he began almost conspiratorially, “we could take a blanket with us. That way, I can lay that on the floor first, and listen through the floor and the blanket. It won’t muffle the sound too much, and that way, I won’t get dirty.”

The image of Seth ‘chunky’ as he put it was so preposterous, so… ridiculous, that Nenet nearly chocked, trying to reign in the mixture of a cough, splutter and laugh. She dipped her head slightly, letting her long hair fall like a curtain over her face as she tried desperately to get her breathing under control. Seth could claim to be a lot of things, but even approaching chunky was not one of them.
“At least if you were… chunky-Seth, there would be more of you to hide behind,” Nenet replied, when she had finally gained enough control to speak a full sentence. She liked the idea of the blanket; it saved them from dirt and had an air of civilization about it. “Maybe if it is safe you can go fetch us both breakfast and we can eat it in peace on the blanket,” Nenet suggested, only half serious.

Ha, laughter! The thought was short-lived and triumphant, but Seth smiled all the same, stupidly proud about making her almost release her mirth that way. He could be just as serious as the next pack member, and was a ‘part-time’ pack fighter, for lack of better wording, but Seth’s main priority around Nenet was her happiness, second only to her safety, of course. It was his way, he supposed, of making up for a little of his past failure… it was nothing short of pathetic, really, given what he was trying to make up for, but if he could relieve some of the shadows even if only for a little while, then it was something.
“You’re too tall to hide behind me, Princess,” he reminded her. True, he was taller, but Nenet was far from short herself; the idea of her hiding behind him made him smile boyishly. “And, well, if we’re going to eat breakfast on a blanket, we might as well take it out into the courtyard or up to the roof. It can be our own breakfast… picnic, or something.”

It was pointless, she knew, to try and convince Seth he didn’t have anything to make up for. What had happened had not been his fault and although she bore scars of both the physical and mental kinds, Nenet would never blame him. He had saved her and given Lapis someone to be with as she passed over. In Nenet’s mind he had done everything he could and more besides. But just as she refused to believe that somehow she could have prevented the deaths of her friends, she knew Seth would refuse to believe that he wasn’t somehow responsible for what had happened.
“I could crouch,” she offered, tucking some of her dark and wavy hair behind her ear as she spoke. “A breakfast picnic sounds ideal. I knew you could come up with brilliant ideas of your own,” Nenet added, a playful tone slipping into her voice at her last few words. “You do have some brains after all.”

In Seth’s mind, he would never make it up to Nenet. He had failed her during that fight that had lost them not only their parents, but their home and the lives that had been set out for them, whatever it would have really led to. She had been taken, and hurt, and he had spent so long trying to find her, changing so much over that time. He kept most of it buried; locked away inside where it belonged. But though he harboured his guilt, without a doubt, he didn’t want to let it consume him, and he certainly didn’t want to wear it on his sleeve like some pack members. Seth had made himself a promise years ago to try and be light-hearted, to try and be a reassurance and reminder to others that laughter was still possible even after shadow and pain…
“Yay.” His smile was positively youthful, like a child who had finally gotten something right after striving for hours. He even made a little triumphant gesture with his arms, before letting them drop to his sides again. “So, we have a plan. A good plan, complete with blankets, sunshine and breakfast food. What could be better?” His hands set themselves on his hips again as he nodded, confirming the idea to himself one last time. “Truly, we are a force to be reckoned with.”

Seth had not been the only one to change during those four years although Nenet’s transformation was much more obvious. She refused to show her guilt or her shame or… anything really. To her, the best way to protect herself and more importantly Seth was to appear as if nothing mattered to her, so that nothing could be used against her. She didn’t want to have to make the choices she had made again, to have her compassion and love used against her in the cruellest of ways although if Seth was in any danger she would without a heartbeats hesitation.
Nenet reached out, ruffling already messy hair as Seth grinned at her. It was rewarding to see him so happy that in a way she felt happy through him. “We do indeed have a plan, the tricky part is carrying it out successfully… that’s where your brawn comes in handy.”

It scared Seth sometimes, how withdrawn and ‘flawless’ Nenet made herself appear to everyone but him; it wasn’t as if she ever spoke about what had happened, and frankly, the male of the pair never expected her to bring it up, but he sometimes wished, deep down inside where his thoughts were so very private, that she wouldn’t appear so shielded and armoured all the time. But Nenet was Nenet… she was proud and strong, in her own ways; unique and defiant and graceful, and he wouldn’t change her for the world. She was everything to Seth; he would sacrifice everything else he had to ensure she stayed happy — or her own variation of it, as much as he wanted her to truly be happy, without restraint — and safe.
The ruffling of his hair earned Nenet something not unlike a boyish giggle, though the sound was too deep to be described as such; he would defend his masculinity, dammit. “I thought I didn’t have brawn,” he pointed out, his bright eyes narrowing sceptically, but also with intrigue. “Or do I have brawn now and again… like Popeye? Except without the spinach.”

The giggle – it was certainly a giggle – inwardly delighted Nenet, the she wolf taking her own kind of pleasure in making him happy. “Are you like one of those squeaky toys?” she enquired dryly, hand hovering over Seth’s head as though she intended to ruffle his hair again. “Will you squeal or make some high pitched noise every time I mess up your hair style?” If that was the case then she wouldn’t hesitate to do it again. If only for the entertainment value.
“I was trying not to offend your frail little masculine psyche by pointing out I could take you in a fight,” Nenet’s voice dropped to a low whisper, brown eyes gleaming as she stared at him. “I didn’t want to upset you by saying your lack of chunky brawn means we would be in trouble if someone got between us and the food.”

Seth’s tongue poked out in a very immature gesture of defiance, and he made a lazy, harmless swat at Nenet’s hand as it hovered. “Nooooo touchie.” He smiled though, ruining his façade regarding his being offended, when really, seeing any kind of peace or happiness in his best friend was a true reward, and made him nothing short of relieved and joyful, really. If he had to be embarrassed or otherwise shown up for her to achieve that state, then so be it. “Besides, I couldn’t achieve a hairstyle if my life depended on it.”
His jaw dropped, and he sucked in a deep breath as if she had struck a real blow. “I… just… that… ouch.” He put a hand on his chest and frowned deeply. “Is your faith in my ability to fetch our breakfast really so low? I-I’m crushed.” The hand moved from his chest, and he shook his head, waving his hand as if his emotions were getting the better of him. “I need a minute here…” Sniffling dramatically, he turned and lifted his chin with a ‘hmph’ as if she had truly hurt his feelings.

She very nearly asked if he thought he was some kind or emperor or llama before controlling herself. To say that would reveal that she had actually watched the movie and taken it in, instead of pretending not to be the slightest bit interested in some cartoon farce. “That wasn’t an answer,” Nenet said instead, pulling her hand back to watch the resulting act.
“I did try to keep the ugly truth from you,” she pointed out, knowing that she hadn’t hurt his feelings, that it was all part of a game they were both enjoying. “It’s not my fault you’re so scrawny. What if we ran into Kyle or someone as bulky as that? I’m just looking at this logically…” Nenet trailed off, biting at her lip lightly as she waited for his no doubt amusing response.

Seth being Seth probably would have replied saying that he was a llama rather than an emperor had Nenet actually asked such a question. His setting for the morning seemed well and truly ‘silly’, and it would likely carry through a good portion of the day, if left undisturbed; if he was left to his own devices, or kept almost solely in the company of people like Nenet, whom he would never tire of or be uncomfortable around — not that he was especially uncomfortable around anyone in the pack — then he would just… stay as he was.
“Bah, I could take Kyle.” Seth paused. “Okay, so I really, really couldn’t, but I could kick his ass at archery.” He smiled again, entertained somewhat by the notion of a ‘competition’ with the pack’s stoic bodyguard. “I’m sure there are some pack fighters I could… um… kick in the shin. And then run away from very, very fast.”
