By the time Chris made that remark, Sarah had her sidearm in hand; she rarely went out without concealing it in her shoulder bag, when she was dressed inappropriately for wearing it. "I'd drop the knife if I were you, buddy," she said acidly. "I can shoot you before you even figure out where you want to stab him. Drop the weapon and we'll settle this calmly."

"Son of a bitch," Sarah grumbled. Her previous partner had spoken Spanish fluently, and over the course of the time they worked together, she had gleaned a few phrases well enough that she could understand them. The words the thug had just spit at her were among those she knew. F*ck you, old maid. Not bothering to translate for Chris -- if he really wanted to know, she'd tell him later -- she took off running, knowing that her taller partner would swiftly outdistance her on his long legs.

Obviously, whatever the perp’ had said hadn’t gone down well; no doubt it was another low insult. Chris only registered the removal of the knife, and the flight of their suspect. He heard Sarah’s heels on the solid ground, and then took off running as well.
Now I remember why I don’t wear this damn thing to work, he inwardly grumbled as his jacket flared out behind him whilst he ran, piling on the speed. He did indeed overtake his partner, keeping his gaze fixed firmly on the back of the young man he was chasing. If he could help it, this guy wasn’t going to be making any kind of getaway tonight; hell, even if it meant a couple of hours of paperwork, and an impromptu long night, Chris would catch the little son of a bitch.

The taller sergeant thundered after him, practically bellowing at the group of people to move out of the way. They leapt to the sides to avoid him, and he didn’t waste any time looking back to thank them, even as he almost skidded around a corner, still in pursuit. He had to put his hand out against a wall to steady himself, cursing quietly about the soles of his footwear.
There he was; Chris could still see the little bastard. And he was trying the sergeant’s patience. With something not too unlike a growl of determination, he barrelled after him, pushing himself faster than he probably should have, and harder than was wise. His lungs were starting to protest, but he ignored them.

Chris’ pace didn’t slow. He saw the dealer dart madly around a corner, and he came up on it, half-expecting to find him sprawled on the ground after tripping on his own feet. Instead, he saw someone else entirely. His eyes lifted, and he looked down the alley’s length. There was nothing; no sounds of retreat, no signs of anyone hiding. There were no fire escapes to provide a handy hiding place.
There was only a fallen man; one Chris didn’t recognise. Either he was unconscious, or pretty damn close to it. The sergeant thought he could see blood.
Calling his partner’s name, knowing she couldn’t be too far behind, he crouched and pulled his registered personal firearm, lifting it in his hands and aiming it cautiously down the alley. He waited for Sarah to come up on the scene, giving a nod of his head down towards the fallen figure, before slowly heading into the shadows to investigate; maybe… just maybe, their perp’ hadn’t managed to get away, and was simply trying to conceal himself.

Panting a bit, Sarah finally caught up to Chris. "What.....where is he?" she asked, glancing around, gun still in hand. "Oh man....I hate running in these shoes...."
She peered at the guy on the ground. "Looks like we stumbled onto another problem in the process....think that's the perp's handiwork?"

“I lost ‘im,” Chris grumbled, not at all happy about that prospect. He was heading further into the shadows of the alley, eyes turning left and right, and senses on the alert for any signs of what could become an ambush. There were no alcoves; no hidden doorways tucked into corners. It was one dark, long length of alley, and absolutely no one else in it. “Dammit…”
After a moment, convincing himself he had lost the suspect, he put the safety back on his gun, and paced back over to the fallen man, and his partner. They had started to gather an audience, and in no mood for interference, Chris stepped past Sarah, saying to her, “Probably,” before he dug out his badge. He needn’t have bothered; half the small crowd backed away at the sight of his drawn gun. “Back away down the alley,” he ordered them firmly, showing them the badge, and pocketing it again afterwards. “Stay down there, unless I say otherwise.”
Moving back to Sarah, he crouched beside her, his expression betraying his irritation at losing the suspect.

"Should I call for an ambulance?" Sarah asked, crouching beside her partner and peering at the downed man. "That gash looks nasty. Bet the perp shoved him aside and he hit the wall....yeah," she added, glancing up. "Look, I think I see blood on the wall there." She was as annoyed as Chris about losing their quarry, but her concern for the moment was for his apparent victim.

Chris nodded firmly. “Looks like he took a good crack to the head,” he remarked, glancing up at her indication, and seeing the same thing. “Hopefully, that’s his only problem, and he’ll just go home with one hell of a headache.”
His cast his pale eyes down the alley again, shaking his head in annoyance. How had he managed to lose him? Yes, the other, younger man was smaller and perhaps more agile, but Chris had been a cop for a decade, and he’d trained rigorously to be one of the best in the business; he was on the top of his game, physically, and not too far off in the mental aspect either, when it came right down to it.
Of course, what it really boiled down to was that he was angry at himself for letting the guy get away…

"Well, hey there," Sarah said as the man sat up groggily. "Had a bit of a run-in with an unsavory character, huh? We'll get you to the hospital; you took a good crack to your head there, you might have a concussion. Can you remember which way he went?" She had unslung her back from her shoulder and was digging for her phone.

Already in something of a sour mood, realising that their victim was plastered didn’t help. Chris sighed, rolled his eyes discreetly and stood, walking to the mouth of the alley with the somewhat false pretence of waiting for the ambulance… the one that hadn’t even been called yet. His tolerance for drunks was absolutely zero, and perhaps even lower, if at all possible.
Personal experience gave him very little in the way of sympathy for that type of individual. Concussion or not…
Stop being a jerk; it could be the concussion talking.

"Are you telling us," said Sarah, after Chris had walked away, "that you stumbled into the wall? You weren't assaulted?"
She sighed. Great. "Tyler," she called, "I think we've hit a dead end."

He nodded slowly, not turning back, but raising his voice so she would hear him. “Call the ambulance anyway. He’ll only pass out on the way home, if we don’t.”
Checking the safety on his gun, he replaced it in its low holster, ensuring it was secure before regaining his upright position, crossing his arms over his chest, as if impatient. He’d tried, time and again, to have more compassion when it came to drunks, but it seemed that, each time they found another one, his tolerance only decreased.

"Right." To the apparent drunk, Sarah said, "Just sit tight. You need to get checked out." She opened her phone and made the call, giving her badge number and directions to the alley where they were currently encamped.
Not exactly the way I thought the evening would end...

Sarah ignored him, listening to the voice on the other end of the call. She was trying to give accurate directions, but the proximity of the buildings was messing with her reception. "Hang on," she told the 911 operator, getting to her feet and moving toward the mouth of the alley. "There. Sorry. Call was all staticky." She continued with the report, occasionally glancing at the injured man to make sure he was still there.
