"Los Angeles."
The male's sharp eyes scanned the skyline of the city as the people below began bustling about, preparing for another morning. Coffees were being brewed, breakfasts cooked, cars started. And from the rooftop of their new home, Gareth and his mate watched with a casual boredom.
"Not quite as impressive as they make it to be," he muttered, holding out a hand to the female by his side.

Slightly shorter than her mate though she was, Alswytha was no less imposing or noble in her stance; calculative and proud of her nature, she stepped up beside Gareth, and looked down on the city, taking the strong hand in her own.
"It's too..." she began, studying the scene laid out before her in all its hectic continuity, "busy. There's no nature left." The wolf in her growled at the way the humans had destroyed the landscape, and filled it to breaking point with skyscrapers and Starbucks; nothing but city as far as the eye could see.

"You know how humans are," the male rumbled, tugging at her hand to pull her closer. "They don't appreciate nature anymore. It's just something pretty to gaze at every once and awhile."
Gareth gave a heavy sigh and leaned into his mate's strong body. His irritation with the human race had only grown in all the years he'd lived through; Alswytha knew that. Hell, she was probably just as fed up with the lazy sods as he was.
"Perhaps it's a curse of mortality. Not being able to simply appreciate what nature can offer."

"They don't understand nature," she returned, letting herself be pulled closer and almost used for support. She knew he needed her, to stay strong; they had been together for so long that their unity made them all the more powerful. "Instead, they cage it, and use it for entertainment."
Her eyes lightened in a supernatural, wolfen fashion, her gaze moving across the rooftops, and dropping down to the streets below them again. She wondered if any mortals could see them from their windows while they brushed their teeth, or showered, and she smiled slightly at the thought. If she was a more mischievous individual, she might have been tempted to really give them something to gawk at...

Gareth simply nodded as he held her close. The scent of her hair was light, familiar, soothing and exciting to him. That certainly hadn't changed. He still depended on her to keep him stable...or as stable as he could be, anyway.
"Second night of the moon, tonight," the ancient male murmured, changing the subject abruptly. "We should make the most of it, like we did in Arizona -- go for a run..." He felt his wolf stir and gave a chuckle that was more of a growl, really. "Scare a few mortals"

Her light eyes returned to their normal shade of green, and brightened with anticipation. "I like that idea," she agreed, smiling eagerly. She turned her head slightly to see his face, and then returned her gaze to the city.
The notion of terrorising a few mortals in the dark corners of Los Angeles filled her with a child-like thrill, and she couldn't help an almost immature giggle at the thought of their reactions. Arizona had been fun, she couldn't deny that, even just to herself. It had renewed her hunger for life, and the wolf within, and the chance to do it all over again in this new home for them... it was too much to resist.
"Maybe we'll find something... promising," she added after a few moments spent in silent appreciation.

He turned his face to her, one eyebrow lifting in an inquisitive manner. Alswytha had been planning for awhile, he knew, but they'd never actually done anything about it. Granted, now was as good a time as any.
"You really think we can find what we need here?"

There was no time like the present. But then, to a werewolf over one thousand years in age — a pair of them at that — such a phrase meant very little. She twisted slightly in her mate’s hold, and returned his gaze. “I think we can find anything,” she pointed out. “It’s a big city, and it’s filled with wolves.” She could smell them all, on the near-non-existent breeze. “I think it’s perfect…”
She trailed off, eyes turning to the streets below them again, filled with excitement at the prospect of finally making something of her idea. She had been waiting for so long, and though convincing Gareth hadn’t exactly been difficult, the timing and location had had to be chosen carefully. A city such as Los Angeles was ideal, she knew, and personally, she couldn’t wait any longer…

He could practically smell her eagerness. It had been ages -- literally -- since Gareth and Alswytha had led a pack, and while he was rather content with it being just the two of them, he understood her restlessness. His mate had always been a leader.
Besides, who was he to deny her whims? "Very well, my dear," he consented in a murmur, brushing his lips briefly against her temple. "Perhaps we can start scouting tonight?"

“Tonight?” She closed her eyes at the gentle contact, and smiled, pleased by the approval. “Hmm… yes, I like that idea.” She leaned against him comfortably, feeling the same gentle breeze tug at her rich hair and carry scents to her; there was so much in this city, it was almost too much for her senses to handle. Almost.
After a few minutes of silence, spent studying the breeze, she inhaled deeply, and whispered to Gareth, “Do you smell that? We know that smell…” It was faint; almost unnoticeable, especially to an untrained nose, but Alswytha and Gareth were beyond experienced, and had become so familiar with the scents she thought she was picking up that she trusted her instincts. Her wolf shifted restlessly from within, and her eyes turned white around the pupils, almost invigorated at the thought of truly being able to see how far they had come; how much they had all changed…

Gareth gave her an inquisitive look before he took in a deep breath. Smog, garbage, humans and wolves...and one very familiar -- if faint -- odor stood out from the rest of the wolfen scents. The ancient male smirked, feeling his wolf give a restless jump inside of him.
"Well, well...what a surprise."

“I’m not imagining it?” she murmured, smiling in curious delight, even as she angled her eyes up towards her mate. Her smile wasn’t entirely pleased though; the memories the scent conjured were far from happy, given what they really symbolised for the old pair, but she knew not to mention such things from the past. “It really is what I think it is?”
Her eyes remained their lupine shade; hinted, at least. It took a fairly strong influence or urge to make her eyes completely white, and rather like her mate, the hints were always there. True, Gareth’s display of his inner beast was stronger than Alswytha’s; the ever-present gold in his eyes was far more telltale than the white that rimmed her pupils, usually only truly visible in good lighting… or to those with a trained eye.

"Oh, it is," he returned with a vicious smile, completely devoid of humor. "The insolent little pup and his ragtag bunch. I'm rather surprised he's lasted this long; he and his dear mate."
A curious thought brought a bit of malicious delight to the male's smile. "It would be so very interesting to bump into them while we're here."

Alswytha’s wolf gave a bitter snarl, and curled up in an irritated ball within her. She soothed it subconsciously with promises of rectification, and looked to Gareth. His feelings on the matter were more justifiable than her own; where she had only had her Alpha-ship removed as a result of the battle for leadership that the males had fought, he had been the one to truly lose… and not only the combat, but everything he had struggled to uphold for centuries.
It was that fact that truly got Alswytha’s hackles raised. They had fought so long, and so hard, to protect and strengthen the pack… and then it had been taken from them, by someone she had once viewed as a potential liability. When the pup had lost his parents, she had thought he would fracture… but his female had guided him through it. She could respect them for that, she supposed…
“I don’t think interesting is the word, Gareth…” she murmured, leaning into him once again. “Imagine their faces, if they saw us again.” She couldn’t help wondering how much had changed; had the pack grown, or shrunk? Did they still operate on the same basic rules? How much had the new Alphas changed…?

"Hmmm," he murmured, his grip around his mate's waist tightening a fraction. "Maybe we should go out of our way just to pay a visit. See what's changed." A low growl rumbled through his chest. "Perhaps exact a little payback, if possible."
Gareth wanted nothing more than to spill the pup's blood. Stanton had robbed him of his pack and his pride, and this old wolf wasn't the type to forgive such a blow. He wanted to slaughter the little cur...
