Iris knew that it was useless to fight her sister on this topic. She knew how to pick her battles and it had been quickly discovered that this was one that she would always lose. She didn’t know why Poppy wouldn’t keep one of the strays she helped, but Iris knew that it was her sister’s decision. Plus, she assumed that Poppy had some sort of reason behind it.
Iris decided to offer a compromise as she glanced down to Casper. “Well, if you decide you want a pet for a day, I’ll lend you Casper. You know how he is. He adores you.”

“I sometimes feel Casper’s love is more cupboard based when it comes to me,” Poppy replied. Grinning again. “If I didn’t give him treats all the time, when you aren’t looking of course, then he wouldn’t love me nearly as much.” She leaned forward, hand lightly stroking over Casper’s head and scratching at his ear. “I’m trying to lure him away from you and to me.”
Poppy all but climbed down from her seat, inching closer to the relaxed dog on Iris’s lap. “Come to the dark side Casp… we have cookies.”

“Hey, now attempting to lure my dog to the dark side!” Iris glanced around, looking for something to throw at Poppy that wouldn’t actually hurt if it hit. Seeing nothing that fit the bill, she settled on a glare.
After a moment, the glare faded and Casper stretched out, attempting to lick Poppy’s nose. “I’m sure that Casper would love you even if you didn’t bribe him with treats. Although, now I know why he seems to be getting a little pudgy…”

At the demand to stop trying to lure Casper away from her sister, Poppy simply stuck her tongue out, looking suitably unrepentant. She knew that Iris didn’t mean the glare, just as she was sure Iris knew she wasn’t really trying to steal Casper away – she would simply grab him and run if she was trying that.
“Did you hear that Casper? Iris thinks you’re getting fat,” Poppy dropped her voice to a low hush, knowing that her sister would still be able to clearly hear her next words. “Don’t you worry, I think you love gorgeous and if she puts you on a diet, I’ll still give you treats and then, bwhaha, you’ll love me more.”

“You’re a real brat, Poppy.” She said that with a grin on her face as she stroked Casper. “Besides, he is getting a little pudgy, but that can be forgiven. You know me. I don’t like skinny animals. They look sickly.”
Deciding that it was time to change the subject before she had to reach out and playfully swat her sister upside her head, she asked, “Anything good planned for the night?”

“I may be a brat Irish…” Poppy paused here, making sure to draw out the name so that it was clear she was using her sister’s nickname instead of her proper one. “But you love me anyway. Because I’m so lovable and anyway, you wouldn’t know what to do if I stopped being a brat. You need me.”
Poppy leaned back, taking a good gulp of her soda before answering the question, her right eyebrow raised slightly as she did. “Oh yes, because you know how much of a busy social life I have. My plans don’t really extend beyond playfully tormenting you… maybe doing some reading as well. Oh what a busy and hard life I lead.”

“Bite me, Pop,” Iris said in response to the nickname. “Actually, don’t. There’s no telling what you’ve got.” She stuck her tongue out immaturely- how often did she do that, anyway?
“Oh, lucky me,” she said, playfully sarcastic. “Tormenting… Still, if you torment me, playfully or otherwise, I get to torment you back, so it’s an even trade.”

“Rabies clearly,” Poppy answered, having to giggle at Iris sticking her tongue out at her. She considered it a personal triumph when she was able to drag her sister down to her ‘level’ of maturity. Not that she would ever tell Iris that – she might try and stop and that would end all of Poppy’s fun. “Better be careful or I really will give it to you.”
“Ah but I have to be bothered by the tormenting for it to be considered torment, even of the playful kind. And right about now…” she trailed off and looked mock thoughtful for a moment. “You’re failing. Badly.”

“Unlike you, dear sister, my expertise isn’t tormenting others. Besides, you’re good enough at that for the both of us.” She gave an innocently sweet smile. After a moment she said, “Anyway, if you start to torment me too badly, I know how to lock the door and not answer when you knock.” Not like she would ever actually do that. She liked to make sure that she was available in case Poppy needed her and her sister knew that perfectly well.

“It’s my duty Iris,” she assured her sister, fixing her with a wide eyed innocent looking stare. Blank almost and designed to look somewhat disconcerting – she had practised it enough after all. “I’m sure that somewhere it is written down in stone that the younger sister is honour bound to try and drive her elder sister mad by tormenting her. I wouldn’t be much of a sister if I refused to do that.”
Poppy didn’t put much stock into her sister’s threat – she knew Iris far too well, and she knew that Iris knew she knew. Poppy shook her head and forced that line of thinking to stop; it was getting far too confusing with all the knowing going on. “You’d feel guilty about not helping me when I need you,” she said wisely, a puppy dog expression now on her face. “Think how bad you would feel. Bad. Bad I say.”

“If I had something to throw at you right now that wasn’t my dog, I would,” Iris told her. “It’s rude to give the puppy expression. Very, very rude.” She was as immune to that look as she was likely to ever be, which wasn’t very. Her sister knew that she could talk her into just about anything with that look, which Iris really didn’t think was a good thing.
Giving a shake of her head, Iris asked, “Have you had dinner yet? I was thinking about ordering something- pizza maybe- if you want something.”

She just grinned, images of a startled Casper being flung though the air with an undignified yelp foremost in her mind. Poppy had a brilliant imagination, and it wasn’t hard to picture the scene her sister had mentioned and find it extremely amusing. Casper would almost certainly disagree with that sentiment, but since it would never happen it was pointless.
“I had something a while ago…” she replied, deciding to drop the puppy dog expression since there wasn’t anything she really wanted from Iris right now. “But pizza sounds great. And better than my attempts at cooking.”

“At least you had the chance to eat something. While I could have taken a dinner break, I really did want to manage to actually get out of there at some point. So, now I’m starving. I’m thinking a large… something. Any topping preferences?”
As Casper settled a bit more comfortably into her lap, Iris picked up the cordless phone that was on the table next to her. She supposed that it was slightly sad that she had the pizza place’s number memorized, but when she worked her insane hours, trying to get photos in for the next day’s paper, pizza just seemed like a must.

“So long as it doesn’t have anchovies on again. I don’t know what the pizza place was thinking, sending over a large pizza with extra anchovies on,” Poppy pulled a face at the thought, eyes screwed up, nose wrinkled and tongue stuck out. “You know me, I’m still in the phase where I will eat almost anything.”
It was far better than her early teenage years, when she had been the most picky and fussy eater in the world. Poppy had been far more concerned about her dancing and therefore her weight than her heath, and would never have dreamed of eating a pizza back then – the calories were horrendous. It was only in recent years that she was finally discovering the joy of food again.

“That anchovy incident was just disgusting,” Iris agreed with a nod. “I know for a fact that I didn’t order anchovies. Got a free large pizza out of the incident though and it wasn’t even the anchovy covered one. How does pepperoni with extra cheese sound?” She started to dial the number, thinking about how good a nice, cheesy pepperoni pizza sounded.
Iris was grateful for the fact that her little sister had adopted what she deemed as normal eating habits. As far as the elder Marcus sister was concerned, there was nothing like sharing a large pizza or some other completely greasy and unhealthy food with her sister while discussing whatever random topic they happened to come up with.
