He pulled into a parking space a few cars down from the grand steps that led up the main doors of the church, watching the light spilling out down the marble steps in what he thought of as a very welcome move. Deiniol killed the engine to his car and muttered a few words in thanks that it hadn’t stalled or crashed on the way over here – he was going to have to try and get a car that was just that little bit better and soon, before the one he currently owned fell apart.
He leaned forward to rest his chin on his hands, staring up at the quiet building. Deiniol always liked to take a few moments to appreciate the aesthetic beauty of the church whenever he got the chance. God liked beauty and it only made sense that God’s home should be beautiful. It was one of the Lord’s physical representations on earth after all.

Continued from: Rayne’s Territory: Parks Etc; Blackwood Park with Iris
Poppy had almost dozed off on the drive across town. She wasn’t sure why she was suddenly so tired – she certainly hadn’t done anything noteworthy today, the most taxing exercise being a two minute dance, a walk to the fountain and back, and wandering around the library. It wasn’t as if she had carried heavy boxes or walked for miles and miles. Or spent hours practicing her dancing like in the old days. She moved sharply at the thought, pushing it away in annoyance. That was at least twice in one day that she had found herself wistfully thinking on the past and it just wasn’t good enough. The past was the past.
Iris pulled into a space, Poppy noticing that there were only a few empty spaces left. She supposed it was normal but it was slightly strange to see so many, so late. They weren’t all to do with the church she guessed but even so… “That’s slightly scary. You don’t drive over the speed limit and yet you mange to get around so fast… did you make it fly or something while I was distracted?”

“Absolutely,” Iris told her with a grin, switching off the engine. “It’s magic. Every big sister can pull it off.” Ah, geez. I just lied on church grounds… She winced inwardly at that. Iris was of the belief that everyone should be on their best behavior when near a church. She refused to swear even when she was just passing a church.
“Wakey, wakey, Pop. Not bedtime yet.” She shoved her door open, grabbing her purse and camera, both of which had been put aside. “Come on. You can come with me again. It’ll wake you up.”

“Really? Whoa… and here I was just thinking it a trait only you possessed. Guess you aren’t so special after all, if every big sister can do it,” Poppy teased, opening the door and climbing out herself. She stretched slightly as she stood, hoping that the cool air would wake her up again. It was embarrassing to feel so sleepy without any just cause and so early on in the night.
She bounced on her heels slightly after the stretch, wind whipping lightly at her hair and twisting it around her face as she looked up at the Church. Poppy had never really thought about it before, because she had never been here so late before but she supposed if the light was on that would mean someone was inside. She wondered if it was manned twenty four hours a day.

“Well, we might all be able to do it, but I’m the best at it.” And there I go again. I’m only joking with my sister, so I imagine I’ll be forgiven for that. She gave a stretch of her own and locked her door, heading for the door, pushing back a lock of hair that had come out of her ponytail. “That does make me special.”
She was walking along trying to balance her camera, her purse and trying to put away her keys when her heel caught in a hole in the ground and she dropped her purse. “Oh, son of a b-unny.” She had almost let slip with a curse, but had managed to catch herself at the last moment. At least that went right.

He had climbed out of his car at last and was heading up the pavement towards the steps of the church when he noticed the two young women, one juggling a variety of items, one slipping from her hands and falling to ground. Instantly, he was standing beside her, silently scooping down and picking it up from the ground with a friendly – if somewhat shy – smile. “Here you go miss,” Deiniol said, offering it back to her. “Do you need any help with your bags?” he offered in his normal thick Welsh accent.
It was in his nature to offer to help anyone at any time. Even if he hadn’t been standing in front of his own church, he would have offered to help. “I’ve never heard son of a bunny before… I like it,” he added, trying his best to be more social, as his mother had scolded him about.

Iris returned the smile with one of her own, taking the purse and giving a little shake of her head. “I can manage them. Thanks, though.” He’s cute and his accent… I won’t even go there. She really did appreciate the offer- she didn’t get to encounter gentlemen too often- but she knew that she could handle everything so long as her heel didn’t hit a hole again.
Iris gave an embarrassed little laugh. “To tell you the truth, I’ve never heard son of a bunny before, either.” She nodded towards the church. “I don’t believe in swearing on church grounds and that was just me catching myself before something else came out.” She tilted her head slightly. “You’re more than welcome to ‘son of a bunny’ if you ever find the need to use it though.” I’m not going to flirt, I’m not going to flirt, I’m not going to flirt… Though she was telling herself that- she was on the job, after all- she was finding it hard to manage it.

“If you’re sure Miss,” he replied, taking her in quickly and making a couple of mental notes as he always did when meeting someone for the first time. Young, well dressed, professional… camera bag, so something to do with photography, either job or a dedicated hobby. Deiniol glanced over at the other young woman, noting the similarities between the two. Related he decided Most likely sisters
In response to her comment about swearing he smiled, instantly taken with someone who showed the church that much respect, even though he was fairly confident she wasn’t a Catholic. “God forgives many things I’m sure he would forgive that.” He held out a hand, remembering his manners. “Deiniol Fey, a pleasure to meet you.”

Iris shifted her bag and shook his hand. “Nice to meet you. I’m Iris Marcus.” She nodded to Poppy. “My younger sister, Poppy.” It was always polite to respond to an introduction with an introduction and know that that was done, she said, “I’m sure He would, but I still like to watch what I say when I’m near a church. I don’t even like to swear when I’m passing one in my car.”
Iris gave another smile and looked towards the church, knowing that if she didn’t take her eyes off Deiniol immediately, she probably wouldn’t be able to. He was a handsome man and well dressed, which was always a plus. “I really do love this church. It’s beautiful.”

“Thank you,” Deiniol replied, smiling softly. He placed his hands in his waistcoat pocket and pulled out his pocket watch to quickly check the time. “I do my best to keep her looking her best for any visitors,” he added, nodding up at the church. “And it is always nice to know my work is appreciated. I can’t claim full credit though. That rests with others.”
Deiniol nodded at Poppy as she moved around the car, the young woman still keeping a small distance away from the talking couple. “Please, call me Denny. It’s… a lot easier to pronounce than Deiniol. Welsh for Daniel.” He was well aware he was rambling but then he wasn’t at his best in social situations.

If I can find a guy even half as cute as him, I’ll be lucky, Iris thought giving another smile. “Well, then, Denny, I’m here on behalf of the Sun. I’m getting photos for a possible local interest piece and I thought that lining up a shot of the church with the full moon would be a nice one.”
She wished that she could think up something else to say, but she had to remember that she was on the job and couldn’t flirt. It was bad form. Still… it was extremely hard to keep her mind on what it needed to be on. Very, very hard.

“Pride is a sin, but I am reasonably pleased with the church’s state. It’s only right that God’s home should represent his power and glory.” Denny grinned suddenly, the action making him look even younger than his twenty four years. “Anyway, it is always an honour to meet the press. I shall have to keep an eye out for the possible piece. I’m sure my mother would love to see it in print.”
He blushed slightly at his own words, inwardly shocked at himself. What did he think he was talking about, mentioning his mother? As if Iris cared about his mother. Shaking his head slightly, he looked up at the church, absently fingering his rosary.

Poppy leaned against the side of the car, watching her sister and the rather tall man talk quietly. It was good to see Iris having a conversation with someone who wasn’t her or a work collage. And if the man was the very example of tall, dark and handsome, well it just meant she had prime joking material whenever the two sisters were next alone.
She looked up at the church for a moment, a small smile curling around her lips. Admittedly she hadn’t caught anything beside the man’s name – Danny or something like that – but even from this distance she could tell from her sister’s actions that she was at least interested. And being shy because of it. Even better blackmail material. Poppy was going to have to remember this next time Iris teased her because it was really too good to pass up.

Iris smiled and couldn’t help but think about how cute she found Denny. He really was adorable and… she had to stop thinking like that. She didn’t even know the man. Not that she wouldn’t like to…
“Pride may be a sin, but the church is beautiful and a lot of work obviously goes into keeping it that way." She tilted her head slightly. "Well, I had better do what I can to make sure that one of the photos of the church is good enough to be chosen if the piece runs then, hadn’t I?” For some reason, she thought it was cute when a man mentioned his mother so long as he didn’t over do it and so long as he spoke well of her. “There are no promises, of course, but I’ll do what I can.
Iris was aware of Poppy’s location and was rather grateful that her younger sister was allowing her to talk to Denny without crowding in on them. And if she dared try blackmailing her, Iris would have to think of something major to get her back with. That was just how it was.

No, no, no! Don’t talk about work! Talk about anything but work! Poppy thought frantically, trying her best to will the thoughts to transmit over to her sister. Sadly, she wasn’t telepathic and had to hope her hard glare would be noticed by Iris and that it would be enough to make her see sense. Yes she was working and that was all very commendable, but how many times did you get the chance to talk to a tall young man?
Poppy bounced on her heels slightly, hoping to catch Iris’s eyes as she made frantic hand movements, speaking partly with normal sign language – she knew odd letters and words – and partly with her own made up language. It was amazing the things you had time for as a child when you were rich and spoilt.
