Iris gave a nod of gratitude. “Thank you.” She wanted out of there badly and, while she did feel guilty leaving Denny behind, checking on Poppy took precedence. She really did think that she could come to like Denny a great deal, but her sister was far more important to her.
Following Katherine, Iris knew that it was highly unlikely that she would ever be able to so much as see the church without thinking about what had happened. It was a shame, too, because it really was a beautiful building. Still, she would probably not be able to so much as look at it as she was driving by, never mind actually stepping foot inside.

Marcus listened, noting automatically, subconsciously, that the man’s accent was Welsh, and distinctly so. Whether or not Wiles had noticed wasn’t important; it was simply a small fact, and probably not at all important to the incident. He took in what Deiniol told him, nodding his head now and again to show the younger man that he was listening as his partner jotted down the details as they came.
The younger Rivera briefly glanced to Katherine, noting her presence with the older sister. If he hadn’t been concentrated on his job at the time, he might have been briefly amused at the young women’s last name being Marcus, but right now, he had bigger fish to fry. There was work to be done, and he couldn’t afford to waste what could be precious moments on his own amusement at something so small and inconsequential.
“That helps us a lot,” Marcus told Deiniol, and meaning it. “Okay,” he continued, his voice compassionate and hinted at with softness, “let’s step out so the forensics team can do their job, all right?” He gestured that they would follow Iris and Katherine out of the main body of the church. The fresh air would probably do the man good, or so the detective hoped. He was obviously shaken, even if he was holding himself together commendably.

Denny gave a slight nod, thinking that it would be a relief to get out of the church – something he had never even dreamed of thinking before – and into the fresh air. He began to move, eyes drifting almost against his will back to the bloody body one last time. Denny found himself thankful that at least his parents would remember the Father as he was and not in this state. His feet slowed and then stopped completely, gaze focused on his friend.
“He was a good man. People always say things like that when someone dies, don’t they. There um, there is that fear of speaking ill of the dead. Nobody deserves what happened to him… but him least of all…” Denny gave a jerky nod as if just affirming that fact one last time before he began to walk again, the fear and adrenaline finally starting to wear off, leaving him cold and tired.
“I just… I just don’t understand why she took so much pleasure in killing him,” he said as they neared the door, eyes slanting to the side to look at Detective Rivera. “You could see it in her eyes. She loved what she had done to him.” He pressed his lips together firmly as if he was trying to stop any more words come tumbling out

As Deiniol looked back, so did Marcus, and he frowned, giving a quiet sigh to himself. This was the worst part of their job; it wasn’t the gore, or the bodies themselves… it was the people left behind — the people they had to console. They had to try and make things make sense for those left behind, and sometimes, they just couldn’t do that, and that bothered Marcus. Not being able to help those left behind find some semblance of peace… it bugged him more than he was willing to admit, sometimes.
“Unfortunately,” Marcus began cautiously, quietly, almost wishing his sister were there to speak for him, “these things don’t always make sense…” That wasn’t what the young man wanted to hear, he knew, but he didn’t have it in him to just flat-out lie. “But we’ll find her. I promise.”
As soon as he’d said it, he wished he hadn’t… he should have known better, by now, than to promise that kind of thing…

They walked past Marcus, Wiles and the other man who Katherine had already made the connection with the Deiniol for and Katherine shot a look at her brother, catching the 'I promise' line and clearly relaying what she thought about it. Her attention was back to Iris after only a second however. She nodded to the thanks, an 'it's my job' kind of nod that came with an unconventional but appropriate smile. It was no time for grinning but she was making to let Iris know that she was doing well and she should put her faith in the police. That's what they were there for, the public to put their faith in them to keep them safe or in this case to bring justice. Katherine, like many detectives, had perfected the right kind of smile for the job.

"Whaddya think, Rox?"
Peter's voice drew her attention away from the bloody scene of the confessional. She paused in her work, carefully packing away the blood and trace evidence that she had found. Her partner's footsteps were quiet and even as he stepped up behind her.
"Perp trapped him," she murmured, standing with her kit. "Probably came in asking for confession...but the neck wound bugs me. Jagged around the edges, fairly wide; it almost looks like he was attacked by an animal, but the perp was human."
Peter nodded. "We'll know more after the autopsy." He twitched a smile at her and nodded his head toward the door. Roxanne saw the jumpsuit-clad boys from the morgue entering as Craine continued, "Let's get going. We'll send what we need to trace and see if we can get anything else from the witnesses during the interviews."
