With a slightly self-deprecating nod and a similarly styled shrug Corin smiled. “Yeah, when you put it that way, it’s really not so bad I lost them. Or that they were stolen.” He paused. “No one’s really sure what happened.”

“I hope the rest of your birthday didn’t suck?” She offered sympathetically; she didn’t actually celebrate her own birthday and never had but her exposure to human culture had highlighted how important it was to some people. “My night doesn’t seem all that bad now.”

“Well,” he began slowly, narrowing his eyes as he thought it over. “There was cake.” As if that said everything.

“And that makes up for all the throwing up and homeless man punching?” She asked. She glanced to the side, having clocked the guy watching them earlier, and whispered, “Now I definitely think you should’ve had that dance.”

“It was really good cake?” Corin shrugged again. It helped that he didn’t really remember all the stupid things that had led to those points he’d told her about. As birthdays went it had definitely been one of the strangest.
His brows went up a little at what she said to him in a whispered voice. With a chuckle that he couldn’t hold back he said, his own voice lowered to match hers, “In retrospect, yeah, that might have been a good idea.” Even if he had known at the time that the rest of the night would go so badly -- or at the very least so strangely -- he probably still wouldn’t have taken her up on it.

Lola, being the perceptive type of woman she was, could tell that he probably wouldn’t have gone ahead with a lap dance even on his birthday, even knowing the rest of the night was probably going to go downhill, but she smiled at him anyhow. It was actually pretty refreshing to have encountered someone in the club who wasn’t all hands or just plain sad. She leant back, taking him in for a few silent moments.
“Sounds like it must have been,” she said. “It’d take one hell of a cake to make up for all that.”

“I’ll have to find out where it came from,” he said, “and then I’ll let you know.” He managed to make it sound like a casual offer but the hint of a smile on his face suggested that he hoped she wouldn’t be totally against the idea.

That made her smile too.
“Oh,” she said, blinking at him with an air of surprise that was slightly belied by the angle at which she was now leaning against the counter, smiling at him slyly. “Expecting to see me again, huh?”

“Well,” he said, shrugging with a feigned air of indifference, “we do make pretty good coffee here.” With one hand he waved casually at the glass display case to his other side. “And we have baked goods.”

When he pointed out the glass cabinet Lola sort of swayed over to it, looking into it with an expression of concentration. She was actually starving, she hadn’t eaten since last night before work, she'd just been distracted from the thought up until now. Flirting was hungry work though.
“Now that you mention it, I’ll take a cinnamon swirl too,” she said, looking up at him again, her smile mischievous “But there are other Starbucks closer to my apartment, you know. I’m about twenty miles away from my neighbourhood.”

As she told him how far she was from her place he went about retrieving her chosen pastry and setting it on a plate for her. He hadn’t rung up her order yet, something the others had noticed. For one thing they set the ordered espresso down on the counter close to him so he could hand it over rather than having it ready for her at the other end. They didn’t say anything though. A few of them were even trying to keep themselves busy instead of openly staring.
“No wonder you’re carrying those,” he said with a nod at the shoes.

“Oh,” she said, lifting the shoes a little. “Yeah. I sort of hate heels, no way am I wearing them again today.” She came back towards the register where the coffee and the pastry were set down.
“Besides they complete the look a little too much. I already had a guy roll down his window along side me.” Lucky for him he’d driven off again before she could reach in and beat his face into the steering wheel.

“Oh, that’s not gross at all,” Corin said in a deadpan fashion.
“You should have thrown one of the shoes at his car.” Not that Corin would have done any such thing himself but he would never be in that kind of position, nor had he ever been involved in a bar fight.

“Right?” Lola said. More than likely if she’d thrown a shoe at the guy it would have involved the heel and his eye, it was usually better for everyone if she didn’t get violent. Most violent endeavours ended in death or a lot of bloodshed at the very least.
“But what’s the point in wasting a perfectly good shoe on a scumbag?”

“Plus they look expensive,” he added, before taking a breath. “Not that I know much about shoes.”
With a shrug he said, “I can’t even keep track of mine.”
