Lola laughed again, nodding. “Your poor, unloved shoes,” she said, shaking her head with an amused sigh. She leant a hip against the counter and opened her bag.
“I guess I should pay for this coffee before I start inhaling it.”

“And I should probably tell you how much it comes to,” Corin said, as if he needed to even the playing field. “Since that’s part of my job and all.”
One of the others down the other end of the counter muttered something but he chose to ignore them.

Given that she was a werewolf and her hearing was a lot sharper than that of a human Lola heard exactly what his colleague was saying (something about flirting that was less than kind) and she turned her eyes on them with something of a glare. She smiled at the man in front of her though, and reached out to turn the cup of coffee around so she could see her name written on it.
“So you remembered to call me Tex,” she said, dialing her flirting up a few levels in response to the peanut gallery. “What should I call you, honey?”

The way she glared suggested she had heard what his co-worker had said. Part of him was tempted to lean right over and ask what she’d heard but ultimately he decided against it. Corin did lean more of his weight on the counter in response to her increased flirtatiousness. He might have been polite but he wasn’t dumb, he didn’t miss that.
It wasn’t until she asked what she should call him that he realised he’d missed off part of his uniform. “Corin,” he offered freely without missing a beat despite his realisation.

“Corin,” she repeated, a little more slowly as if she were testing out the name on her tongue. She nodded. “Cute. It suits you.”

“Cute?” He laughed. “I haven’t heard that one before.” If his co-workers were still paying attention he had stopped noticing. “It’s French, apparently.” It was an offhanded remark, thrown out there just in case she was interested.
“Do I have to keep calling you Tex?”

It was definitely French. Lola even knew what it meant but she didn’t think telling him that would be such a smart move, it invited questions about how she knew that or where she’d learned French and maybe he wouldn’t even ask but she wasn’t about to risk it.
“I don’t know I guess that depends on if you want my name or my number,” she caught the corner of her bottom lip between her teeth, raising an eyebrow at him.

Corin had looked it up once during a slow afternoon in class but had since forgotten the meaning he’d dug up. Any and all thoughts about possibly investigating it again were thoroughly derailed by her next statement.
Corin had never been more grateful for what acting skills he did possess that kept him from showing his surprise. “What if I want both?” he ventured, letting only the hint of a smile show at the corner of his mouth.

Usually they were cautioned pretty strictly about giving out any of their details, Lola was certainly pretty staunch about following the rules in the club but she was also a werewolf who was more than capable of taking care of herself and when she met someone she liked -- and there was really no point in denying that she liked Corin, or that he’d made an impression on her -- often she sort of tossed the rule book out the window. Rules were only useful up to a certain point and then they just trapped people, she’d experienced that more than enough in her lifetime so far.
“Lola,” she told him. “And I’m gonna need a pen if you’re sure about wanting that number too. I’m not in the business of withholding things people want.”

There was no hiding the smile that came to his face when she actually gave him her name. Part of Corin hadn’t been sure if she would give it freely, maybe because she wasn’t allowed or it was against some personal policy she’d had in place for however long she’d been doing her job. He managed to at least keep the smile from spreading too wide or becoming too obvious, too much of a tell of how relieved and pleased he was, but something about her made him think that she might figure that out for herself anyway.
Oh well. Corin was much more interested in taking his pen from his pocket and offering it to her. He tried not to do it too quickly, too eagerly. The others were watching the exchange and he didn’t want to make an idiot of himself. It wasn’t just them that he worried about, it was more what Lola would think that had him pacing himself.

Lola had a fairly good track record when it came to not giving her name to creeps, though as far as any of her boyfriends had ever known ‘Lola’ was her whole name and nothing more; she let her barriers down in increments, small doses when invisible thresholds of trust were crossed. Corin couldn’t know it yet but he was one in a million when it came to people she met at the club who got as far as her real name, let alone her number. One look at him though, one flash of memory at how he’d politely declined his private lap dance and she knew that he wasn’t a creep, you only have to look into his eyes to know he was a lamb. There was an achingly adorable innocence about him that Lola just couldn’t help but be drawn to, it was as simple as that.
Carefully she leaned forwards to take the pen from him, even that motion one of a dancer. She watched him a beat and then whisked a napkin across the counter to write on.
Under the name Lola written in pretty cursive script she jotted her number, drawing the zeros as hearts. She placed her palm on the napkin and slid it back to him but didn’t move her hand for a moment. “I’m trusting you with this,” she said, looking up from beneath her lashes at him. “It looks like you might work with a few creeps,” she said the word a little louder than necessary, “and when creeps call me just to breathe down the phone I have to change my digits.”

There was something about the way she wrote those zeroes, something he suspected his friends would tease him for -- everyone except Bailey, that is -- but he found it endearing. Perhaps not endearing, that didn’t seem like the best word but whatever the word for it, that little detail was he liked.
“A few,” he confirmed, “but don’t worry. There’s no way they’re getting this.” He touched the napkin but didn’t tried to tug it away from her. Corin understood that she was trusting him, that this was a big gesture on her part, and he wasn’t about to make light of it.

“Good answer,” Lola remarked, smiling at him. She removed her hand from the napkin but kept the conspiratorial closeness for a few moments more before she leant back again. “And I’m off on Thursday nights,” she told him. “For the record.”

Corin slid the napkin closer but kept his eyes on her face. “Thursday nights?” He kept his voice low. As she’d said herself it looked like he worked with a few creeps, something Corin couldn’t argue even if he might want to, and the last thing he wanted was for one of those creeps to bug him when Thursday rolled around. “I’ll keep that in mind.”
When she leant back so too did he, finally dropping his gaze to the number with the name written above it. He folded the napkin in half so he could slip it into the pocket of his pants where no one else could get to it.

Lola placed the pen down on the counter with a slight nod of approval at the folded safety of the napkin and therefore her number. Camilla would be pleased to know that she hadn’t given her number to someone who was going to tack it up on the corkboard or something, in their line of work it paid to be careful with personal information; numbers, names, all that stuff that could lead a gal to troubled waters. Of course, they weren't just normal girls, but humans could still cause plenty of trouble in their own little ways.
She smiled at him, flipping her purse open so that she could pay for her coffee. “It’s way past my bedtime so,” she trailed off, taking out a few bills.
