It was the very least of allowances the others could give them after all- these scant few moments they had with one another. Yes, they had certain responsibilities but there was probably never any doubt exactly who was the first concern with either of them. Regardless of how ‘selfish’ it could be viewed as, Dia couldn’t deny that the same thoughts came to her mind- just wanting everything to stop so they could fully enjoy time together.
For a few days Dia had been waiting or the right moment alone with Cole to do this, and even as she spoke, a content and happy smile graced her relaxed expression. “I have news.” News that obviously Cole wasn’t privy to, and it was no doubt a rare event all to itself when one Alpha new something the other didn’t. But no matter, it wouldn’t apply for much longer.

The pack gave them their space, and it was all Cole and Dia could really ask of them; all they wanted to ask of them. They had their mornings and late evenings together, to lie in one another’s arms, or to simply act childish — whatever their moods called for. Cole didn’t particularly care how they spent their time, so long as their bickering remained a thing of the past, as amusing as it had sometimes been. He clearly remembered the many times she had tried to slam a door in his face, or throw something at his head. He smiled quietly to himself at the nostalgia as it drifted through his mind lazily.
When Dia spoke, however, such memories faded, overwhelmed by the present, and he met her gaze, looking to her as she nestled herself against his chest. His brow furrowed softly, curiously. His mate didn’t sound troubled, or upset, which begged the question… what did she have to tell him?
“Oh?” He traced his fingers lightly through her hair again, the light from the slightly parted curtains catching the white gold of his Claddagh ring. “And what might that be?”

Dia’s temper had evened out considerably over the years, that much was undeniable. It was still very much there and present as it was simply inherent to her nature. But it was a part that didn’t come out anymore because she let others hold sway. Over time the extremes stopped holding sway in favor of the middle ground, and that could certainly be said for both of them. She could definitely recall Cole having done some arrogant, foolhardy, and pompous things to instigate those slammed doors and thrown objects. But yes, that was all in their past. As amusing as the comparison may be, in many ways the pair were like an old married couple. And essentially that’s what they indeed were.
Dia’s hand reached out, taking hold of Cole’s free one, her own ring the only adornment as she lifted her head to look at her mate. This wasn’t something to be imparted in a tease or drawn out. This was something they should share, a new joy for both of them. She simply had to say it. “I’m pregnant.” From the smile that came with the confession, it was clear that Dia had already come to terms with the development. Surprisingly it hadn’t taken her very long at all to get used to the possibility of being a mother.

With age came experience, power and above all, patience. Dia wasn’t alone there, and all four leaders of the pack had learned these important traits, and how to keep them in check, over the time they had been alive, and in Heidi’s case, turned. His own temper was buried where it belonged, only unleashed when it was needed; if a pack member was wounded, or if they were threatened, or if something had happened to Dia herself… if it was justified, it didn’t take much for Cole to ‘snap’, as it were, but those instances were, thankfully, rare; few and far between. And in many ways, the Alpha female kept him grounded — so long as he had her by his side, he could collect himself and move on.
As prepared as he had thought he was for whatever might come out of her mouth, in all honesty, that had been the one thing he hadn’t been ready for, and it showed. As he digested the two simple words and the weight of their meaning, he paused in his breathing, held her gaze, and waited… Dia was no prankster, but it didn’t hurt to have assurance. When she didn’t say anything to conflict her statement, he allowed himself to exhale, and steadily, a smile came back to his face, his fingers twining with hers. Curbing his excitement, just for a few moments more, he asked her, “You’re… you’re sure?”
Cole never doubted his mate, but he wanted it to be a concreted fact before he allowed himself to react. But if her smile was anything to go by, the answer was obvious.

Defending the pack or her mate were the only times most had seen the more volatile side of Dia. And she felt much the same way about Cole- his presence helped keep her that way. Some who’d known the two in their younger centuries might consider it something of a surprise, since it wasn’t always entirely like that. Even before they were mates, there were times when Cole had been both the one who calmed her the most as well as the one infuriated her the most. But that was quite a long time ago, and now the simple act of her fingers intertwining with her mate’s made her feel as if there was nothing she couldn’t overcome as long as he was with her.
Dia nodded. “I knew, but I wanted to make sure before I told you and…now I am.” Even before she’d gotten full confirmation from Nate, Dia had just somehow known what was already going on inside her. Still she wasn’t exactly one to rush into things anymore so the extra step had been taken. “Yes, I’m sure.”

Steven was perhaps the only one still with the pack who could remember Cole and Dia ‘butting heads’ the way they had in their youths, when verbal sparring and close-calls had seemed more like a game to them than anything else. Perhaps Heidi could recall it too, but by the time she had joined their number, he and Dia had already become mates, and their bickering and fighting had become more of a flirtation than anything else. Nowadays, they still exchanged the odd taunt, but it was only ever to provoke laughter, whether it be from one another, or a few gathered pack mates. They were comfortable enough with each other, and their pack, to be able to do that, without any shame or shyness. As Alphas, they no longer really possessed the ‘capability’ to be shy or meek in any way. They had to be bold for their family.
Cole’s smile grew, and he watched her face, warmed by the expression on her face; the quiet excitement and happiness, and he felt it reflect in his own. How long had she known? No, that didn’t matter. He sounded a small laugh, and used his free hand to bring her face closer to his, kissing her soundly on the lips, passionately. Hopefully, where words had temporarily failed him, the loving gesture would be enough to show his mate that he was overwhelmed, in the best way, by her announcement.

There was no shame in enjoying what was now nearing a millennia of knowing someone. Knowing them and loving them more and more as the years flow by.
The gesture was more then enough, and Dia shifted again, closer to her mate to deepen the kiss. She hadn’t truly doubted what Cole’s reaction would be but still to see it brought an indescribable joy to her heart. There was that little something- she knew she could always count on her beloved mate. If nothing else, she had him, and had for so long. But now- they’d have a family. When the kiss broke Dia leaned her forehead against Cole’s before a soft, happy laugh escaped her. Briefly her eyes deviated from her mate’s to the loom in the corner. Old, but very much still working and actually used every now and again. “I should make proper use of that thing, shouldn’t I?.” Only a moment went by before her focus was on Cole again. “A blanket, I think.” What would be more fitting than using the loom she’d gotten from her mother to make something for her own child? No, their child.

He smiled happily, softly brushing back her loose curls of hair, sweeping them delicately over her shoulders as he enjoyed the comfortable proximity, made all the more enjoyable by the news she had shared, and what it would mean for both of them… for the pack. It had been so long since there had been a birth, and it would surely lift everyone’s spirits; bring them a little bit of hope, even if they weren’t necessarily pessimistic about such a state of affairs.
Cole followed her gaze briefly, returning it to her face as soon as he could to take in her joy once again; it helped his own state of happiness to see her so excited about it, and though he would have been delighted anyway, so long as she was happy, nothing could ruin that for him. Quietly but contently he asked her, “But what colour would you make it? Do you know if it’s a boy or a girl?” He assumed she didn’t; she wasn’t showing, so he presumed it was too early to tell.

Births were a reassuring thing as far as the pack was concerned. Adding members to their larger ‘family’ not just by random occurrence but a bona fide continuation of a generation- well, how could it not be good news?
As Dia shook her head, a few of the curls Cole had tucked away from her face came loose and fell forward again, and her thumb idly ran back and forth over his where their fingers were still linked. “No it’s too soon. But- green.” Green works for either. So does yellow.” She laughed again, realizing how suddenly excited she must seem. Having Cole know was such a relief. The secret had been weighing heavily on her for the past number of days, and to have that sudden weight lifted, to let him know: it more than made up for it. Again she smiled at her mate. “It was so hard not telling you. But I wanted to be absolutely certain. I didn’t want to take that risk.”

Cole honestly, right at that moment, couldn’t remember the last time someone had been born into the pack, and not introduced to it. It, oddly enough, didn’t happen as often as it had in the past, like when he and Dia had been youngsters, for example. He didn’t waste any time trying to think why that was, though, too preoccupied by the conversation he and his mate were sharing.
He chuckled softly. “Green? Hmm… I think I can live with green,” he offered, and laughed lightly again, enjoying the feel of it as it bubbled and formed in his chest before it sounded. His smile just wouldn’t fade, and he felt momentarily foolish for being unable to banish it… no, not unable… unwilling. This was a perfect time to sound or show happiness, and he was fairly sure nothing would stop him for a while.
Granting her another kiss, he said to her, feeling the loose wisps of her hair tickle his face, “I understand. I…” He laughed again. “Does anyone else know yet?”

Well that would change soon, wouldn’t it? To not only have a birth in the pack, but to have the child be born from the pack’s Alphas. Well it was certainly a landmark thing.
“Green it is, then.” A part of Dia almost felt like scolding herself for being so unabashedly blissful. She’d grown so used to the calm happiness she shared with Cole, it almost seemed as if she’d ‘grown out’ of acting any other way. The more dominant part of her didn’t care and realized that yes, it was justified and she should cherish the feeling just as any other. Dia leaned down into the kiss, deepening it, then gently nuzzled her face into Cole’s neck when they parted. “Only Heidi and Nate. No one else. I told them to keep it to themselves until you knew too.”

Cole found himself wondering how the pack would react. He didn’t always show his curiosity, necessarily, but it was always right there under the surface, waiting for a release. He would keep it contained, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t looking forward to the announcement he and Dia would be making, but only if she wanted to do so.
“Understandable,” he said quietly and softly, stroking his fingers through her hair again, as if he weren’t even thinking about the action, and after so long as her mate, sharing the same bed, it had become habit. She had once lightly chided him for ‘playing’, but that had been so many years ago that he could only assume it had never really bothered her in the first place; that, or she had simply grown accustomed to it.
“When do you want to tell the pack?” If she didn’t want to just yet, he would understand; he even thought he could mask his excitement, if he needed to.

“Soon. I don’t want to keep it a secret anymore.” Keeping it from her mate had been hard enough. Now that he knew and was as excited as she was, there was no reason to delay letting the others know once everyone had settled from the full moon.
Lifting the hand that held Cole’s, Dia’s gaze briefly rested on her ring and her fingers intertwined with her mate’s. Much like with Cole, the action had become almost automatic- her seeking some physical contact with her mate, even if it was as small and unnoticeable as their hands touching. After a moment she spoke again, voice quite and content. She was always calmer when around Cole. “It’s sudden but it just seems- right, doesn’t it?” Certainly it had always been a possibility that and she and Cole may have children but it had never been an extended topic of discussion.

Cole understood. He knew about keeping secrets from a pack that were pretty much family because he did it every week; he did it for their benefit, because it was his place and he had to. To be their Alpha, he had to be strong for them, and there were some things they were better off not knowing. So he hid them away, from everyone but Dia. But he wasn’t thinking about that… not right now; not when they could finally share something pure that was theirs and nothing but good.
His smile was soft but as genuine as every other expression he showed his mate. He could never lie to her, or falsify anything, and not only because she knew him too well to be fooled. “It does,” he told her, bringing her hand entwined with his closer so he could kiss the back of hers. It had crossed his mind many times in the past, but never for extended periods of time, and it certainly hadn’t been something that he and Dia had sat down and discussed at length, though at their age, such a thing was probably surprising, given what they had already seen and experienced in their lifetimes. Children just seemed like a logical step.

It was simply part of being at the top of the proverbial pecking order- you take care of things many will never even know were problems or issues. And as long as that was the case, it meant Cole and Dia were doing things right. But this was something they could and would share with all. Joys like this were few and far between, so it was definitely one to be shared as soon as possible.
A logical step that was centuries in the making, even. One might wonder why it would happen now, at this point in time, but it simply seemed to be one of the little mysteries of life that could even boggle those who were ‘immortal’. And Dia was perfectly happy not trying to figure out rhyme and reason, she was satisfied enjoying the anticipation of the result. It was little moments like this that stood out in her memory, even over the centuries. Even with as deeply as she and Cole knew each other it never seemed common place or routine. It was always renewing and soothing. Even after being together the better part of a millennia, there was nothing that she enjoyed more than simply being with Cole in these quite little moments, and she smiled softly and contenly. “Glad you didn’t get up early?”
