Slipping into the room with the others, she set her bags down on the table, able to set her book aside out of reach of the food, which might end up damaging the novel in some way; the last thing she wanted, or needed, was to pay a fine for damaging it.
She delved into one of the bags with her arm, retrieving her prize; a large, wrapped cheeseburger that she’d been craving madly since they’d hit the fresh air outside of the library. Her stomach was growling, and the smell of the takeout only made that worse.
Yeah, this is so not gonna last…

"Make sure you save some of those," Heidi teased Cassidy, coming up behind her as she started ravaging the cheeseburger. "The chief and sergeant are on their way down."
She sat down to help herself to some of the food, and in short order, the Alpha and Beta Males put in their expected appearances. Her mouth was full, so she contented herself with a small wave.

“As if his ego needs any more inflating,” Cole quipped as he moved casually through the doorway, pausing Cassidy in mid mouthful. She seemed to suddenly become aware of the fact that she had taken a rather large bite, and sat down somewhat meekly at the table, much to Devon’s amusement, while she gnawed her way through it. Cole smiled.
He moved further into the room, leaning alongside Heidi to rummage through the bags, curious as to what they had returned with. After finding something to his liking that hadn’t already been claimed, he eyed the group discreetly and calmly, as if to make sure they all had the limbs they had gone out with. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust Heidi to take care of them while they were out — exactly the opposite — but it was a habit; instinct that he couldn’t shake.

"Thanks, really . . ." His sarcasm was good-natured, though, something he tended to use most often with Cole. "But there is nothing wrong with my ego. It's perfectly healthy." Now, whether or not that was true, even he wasn't sure, but it sounded good to him. He leaned in the doorway casually for a minute, mentally checking over everyone who'd gone out, as he usually did when someone left. Everyone seemed perfectly fine, but his philosophy about it tended to be closer to 'better safe than sorry.'
Once he was sure everyone was accounted for he headed on into the room, glancing through the food before claiming something himself.

"If by healthy, you mean active and thriving," said Heidi good-naturedly, wiping her mouth with a napkin, "then yes, it certainly is healthy."
She had to admit, however, that it was good to see the way his gaze traveled over those who had returned, his concern for them evident -- herself included. Whatever else could be said about Steven, he consistently took his duties seriously, and she never failed to admire that.
She shook her head. Where did that come from? Mildly irritated, she turned her attention to her burger, and away from...where it had been.

It certainly would have been preferable to clean up and change before heading to the dining room, but Dia knew her mate. She was fully aware that if he or his Beta, for that matter were present, a situation like having excess take out might be a fleeting opportunity and one best not allowed pass by.
Entering the dining room, Dia did a quick, discreet sweep of those present. No doubt Cole and Steven both had already done so and she had no desire to make the Heidi feel as if they were all looking over her shoulder in respect to responsibilities with the pack. They were just being thorough, really.
“Hope you thought to bring extra,” she said lightly with a slight smile before rummaging in one or two of the bags and finding that consistent with Heidi’s tendency for meticulous forethought, they had indeed. Not dallying long in selecting something, Dia settled near Cole, smiling warmly at him as she did so.

She came in walking calmly, having practically dashed from her room to here and glanced around, realizing just how late she actually was. "Got caught up reading," she admitted with a sheepish smile as she rummaged for her food before taking her empty seat. "I didn't realize what time it was."
It was a common and very natural thing for her to lose herself in a book, but she still felt the need to give some sort of explination. Even if it wasn't a very good one.

Returning Dia's smile as she settled down beside him - he had claimed a seat at the large table in the room, relaxing just enough for him to seem at ease, but not enough to make him slouch too terribly - he listened to the general chatter of the pack members who had come into the dining room to take advantage of the excess takeout.
"As usual," he said to Dia, "Heidi thought of everything." He gave the Beta Female a calm smirk, and then looked up as Sissy entered the room. Really, she didn't need to explain herself; it wasn't as if the pack members were expected to eat together. The kitchen was always beyond stocked with all sorts of food, and they could eat whenever they wanted... of course, the fact that Heidi and the others had brought food like this into a hotel filled with people who had enhanced senses - including smell - was bound to attract attention.
Looking back to Dia, he said to her, "Enjoy your training?" He smiled at her, a subtle degree of mischief slipping into his expression.

Cassidy looked up as Sissy came in, and then patted the seat next to her energetically, mouth still rather full with the large bite of the cheeseburger she'd nearly choked on when Cole and Steven had come into the room... though why, she still didn't know. She supposed they still intimidated her, and she had to admit, now that she had someone her own 'age' - or at least of the same standing - to talk to, the fact that both Alphas and both Betas were in the room wouldn't bother her so much.
Swallowing, she looked to the other younger female. "So what're you reading? Any good?" They both had a passion for reading, and it was perhaps what had drawn Cassidy to befriend Sissy in the first place. Beyond that, it had been easy to get along with her. Sissy didn't exactly make it hard...

Heidi inclined her head in acknowledgement to the Alpha Female, and then to the Male after his remark. She smiled at Sissy as the younger wolf settled down and began chatting with Cass, but after a moment's contemplation she decided that two burgers was really quite enough to satisfy herself. Settling back in her chair, she pulled out her notebook and began reviewing the information she had written down at the library. There's a connection here...I know there is...

Sissy nodded to Cassidy's last question as she unwrapped her burger. "It's a collection of works by Edgar Allen Poe I found in my closet earlier. I had actually forgotten that I had it until I started rooting around for something to read and happened upon it."
She always tried to sit next to Cassidy just so she would have someone she could talk to, but she tried even harder when any number of the Alphas or Betas were in the same room. She was one of the younger members of the pack and the older members were intimidating to her, whether they realized it or not. Cassidy, being somewhat closer to her own age, was extremely easy to talk to and the fact that they both loved books meant that they always had a topic when other conversations ran low. Cassidy had been the first friend she had made after joining with the pack and was one of the few pack members that Sissy felt completely at ease around.

Cole looked up when one of the other pack members entered the room, clearly not interested in food. He stood on the opposite side of the table to the Alphas, and before he had said a word, Cole took a moment to smell the air. Filtering out the scents of the wolves all around him, and the takeout in the room, he fixed on one he’d come to know rather well… albeit one he hadn’t expected to detect.
Rising from his chair, leaving his burger on the table, he headed out of the dining room, and towards the lobby, to meet their guest.

Steven noticed when Cole got up and left, his brow furrowing slightly in concern. Something seemed to be up . . . Though it probably wasn't anything too serious, or he would have said something to someone else. Relax. Things are fine. After finishing his lunch, he moved over to his fellow Beta, noticing the notebook.
Still reading, even at lunch . . . Typical. "What are you up to this time?"

"Hm?" Heidi tilted her head back to look up into Steven's face. "New client looking to trace his family tree. He thinks he's descended from one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Problem is, George Taylor -- the signer in question -- may or may not have been the father of a bunch of children by one of his slaves. And since there's no way to determine for certain, I have to hope I can find a connection through one of Taylor's legitimate children...most of whom didn't survive to adulthood. It's complicated." Her dark eyes sparkled with the thrill of the hunt.

He just couldn't stop himself from rolling his eyes slightly, shaking his head. Of all the interesting pasttimes out there, why did she have to pick something so . . . tedious? He just didn't understand it, or her, sometimes. He glanced at the notebook a second before wrinkling his nose a little in boredom. How she read that stuff night and day was beyond him.
"I just don't get you sometimes . . ." he muttered, shaking his head again.
