“I think we’re safe for tonight when it comes to battered human associates. Although, how you managed to get to the roof alone and I ended up with my own little personal party is beyond me.” Steven straightened up, turning slightly to look at Cole, shaking his head slightly. To him at least, it felt as if their situations should be reversed and the group watching out for him, should have stayed behind so they could then watch out for Cole instead. Even if they couldn’t have known Cole would come up here. As Beta male, he was important yes, but compared to Cole, nothing.
Steven kept part of his attention fixed on the city spread out before them as he spoke, confident that said group of werewolves would be able to watch a single door and thus their backs.

Cole’s chuckle was light, almost carefree if it hadn’t been for the undertone of relief that came from Steven’s words of reassurance about their state of security. His nod was a little firmer than the sound of his amusement, and he looked back over his shoulder at the small collection of wolves who stood watch, over the rooftop in general, and the two lead males at the edge.
“I know the tricks,” he said, his hands leaning down on the cool, hard ledge before them, the weight lessening from his left foot slightly; casually. “It takes practise,” he shared, looking to Steven with an amused smirk on his face, before he chuckled again and looked out over the city beyond their home. “Or they knew I was coming up here.” His shoulders shrugged, and his smile was light.

“What, we have more psychic members of the pack now? That’s just what we need, yet more crazy.” Steven’s tone was light, matching Cole’s. “I think dead people and emotion readers are enough for me thank you very much. I seem to recall a time when life was so much simpler… boring as hell of course…”
He crouched back down again, finding that the almost pouncing motion calmed him, calmed his wolf even more so than being out in the night air did. “So teach me, o master,” Steven added, his voice dry. “Teach me the tricks of the ninja…” It wasn’t often that the two could relax at the same time, but up here, watching over their home and after the evening they had just had, he thought they deserved a bit of light-hearted fun.

The Alpha male laughed, amused as ever by Steven’s ability to take situations and put some kind of spin on them; it didn’t matter just how positive or light he made them. It mattered that he made the effort and that was what Cole cared about the most. “Well, the world keeps changing, Steven. Before you know it, we’ll have super-supernaturals, or something to that degree…” Again, he shrugged, and glanced at his friend.
Crossing his arms on the same ledge that Steven crouched gracefully upon, Cole angled his gaze up, posture calm and almost relaxed, for a change. “The tricks of the ninja? Not quite how I would have put it, but…” He paused to smirk, pressing on, “It’s all about foresight. And trusting my nose.” His brief grin was oddly boyish; misleadingly so for someone of his age.

“Great… now I feel old Cole, thanks. Really old…” Steven shook his head slightly, turning to look across at the other werewolf. “It’s hard to keep up with all these youngsters of today… course, if I’m feeling old, I dread to think how you feel. Ancient probably. Back giving you trouble lately?” Steven grinned for a second as he spoke, nothing more than a flash of teeth that to anyone who didn’t know him would be considered a threat.
“Foresight? Sounds very super-supernatural…” He had foresight of course – you couldn’t really get to be beta without thinking ahead. Steven just chose to rarely advertise that fact, content to let people underestimate him. It helped in the long run.

Cole’s laughter went unhindered this time, no doubt surprising a few of the younger wolves who hung back, watching over them. The Alpha male wasn’t exactly quiet or nonchalant, by any standard, but a full laugh from him wasn’t a regular event, so he didn’t doubt they logged it away in their memories. He grinned right back, shaking his head. “I can push you off this roof, you know,” he pointlessly reminded Steven; pointless because he would never do it, and pointless because, yes, Steven probably did know that.
Eyeing the Beta sidelong, he continued, “Well, we have a medium werewolf, and an empathic werewolf. Granted, they were both turned, so it’s not like it’s a pureborn phenomenon.”
Yet, his mind added, and he made a small, thoughtful sound, wondering if it was possible at any point in the future.

It was always good to hear Cole laugh – with all the responsibilities of being the Alpha to such a large pack, a full blown laugh was something to be treasured. And then later, to be recounted to Heidi, while mocking that he had been able to do it and she hadn’t. Not that he stored up things like that to tease her, because that would be mean. “Yeah, yeah, grandpa,” Steven replied. “See me quaking in my boots. I could take you.”
Steven fell silent for a moment, unconsciously following Cole’s own trail of thought. “Give it a few hundred years, when turned werewolves start mating and giving birth and we might have our first pureborn psychic. Or we might just have more werewolves.”

“Grandpa?” He gave a small, ‘fake’ growl. “Don’t push your luck, Stevey.” He flashed a fresh grin at the Beta, cocking his head in a telltale fashion, to show that he was teasing, but enjoying the banter all the same. “Last time we sparred, I had you down on the mat before we hit the five minute mark.” A smirk showed itself. “Unless the landing gave you a concussion, and you’ve randomly forgotten.”
Uncrossing his arms, and dangling his hands over the very edge of the roof, he looked to Steven as the Irish male sounded his thoughts, listening to each word attentively, as was his way. “Or both,” he offered, a hint of a smile still visible. “More werewolves, but a good percentage who make the rest of us look just plain bland.”

“I was going easy on you old man.” Steven returned the grin with a smirk of his own. He knew Cole was only teasing, just as he was sure that Cole knew the same thing when it came to him. “I didn’t want to offend your delicate ego by beating you. You crying… it is never a pretty picture, so it was a pack service really.”
“If that happens, then we’re the past. We shall end up obsolete! Obsolete I tell you. Werewolves with powers like that will make us useless.” He shrugged, wondering what just would happen. “Oh well. We shall know when the time comes. I intent to tell you; I told you so, if I’m right.”

“Oh, charming,” Cole muttered with a smirk, wondering what the pack members behind them on the roof would think of their exchange. It wasn’t every day that the Alpha and Beta males stood together playfully mocking one another, after all. “I’ll keep that in mind next time you need my help.” He rested on one elbow as he turned to the side to regard Steven more fully.
“Well, we’re still useful for a while, until the mega-werewolves come along and make us ‘obsolete’. Until then, I think we’re safe.” Cole glanced over the roof, watching the movement below for a moment, casually, before eyeing Steven anew. “I figure we’ve got a few years ahead of us yet.”

If Steven was a younger, less mature werewolf, he might have stuck his tongue out at Cole. If he didn’t have some of the pack watching them, mentally taking notes and no doubt planning to spread the story as soon as they could, he might have made some joke about it always being Cole’s fault that he needed any help in the first place. But, Steven was a mature, serious Beta male who wouldn’t dream of doing anything that childish.
“Yes, you’ve still got your twilight years in front of you, years to enjoy in safety before the Mega-wolves. Lots of sitting around watching daytime shows and soaps. You, lucky Grandpa you.”

It wouldn’t have been the first time Steven had stuck his tongue out at Cole, had he decided to go with his urges, but it was no doubt for the best that they didn’t descend to that level of immaturity. The Alpha male could probably be just as childish as the Beta male, after all. He actually didn’t mind so much if others in the pack saw that side of him; he was of the belief that they didn’t see it enough, but he knew there had to be a balance between play and business, and he had a reputation to uphold, not only because of his own ‘ego’ — what minimal one he had, under the circumstances — but for the good of the pack. If he wasn’t well-known for being dominant, protective and strong, then the pack could come under threat… and he wouldn’t even allow that to become a risk.
Cole rolled his eyes, before swinging out and landing a smack in Steven’s exposed side; not enough to wind him, but probably enough to leave him sore, if only for a few moments before it faded, to be forgotten. “For a Beta male of nearly seven-hundred, you can be such a brat.”

He gave a little yelp at the smack, rubbing the palm of his hand against where the playful blow had landed as he pouted. “That was completely uncalled for,” Steven replied, still giving Cole his best kicked puppy look, complete with large sad eyes and wobbling bottom lip in the perfect pout. “Just because I’m young at heart doesn’t mean I’m a brat.”
Steven shifted slightly on the ledge, hand slowly lowering and pressing against the smooth surface as he changed the centre of his balance, automatically adjusting to his change as he leaned. Taking in a slightly different view of the city below him and sniffing deeply. There was nothing troubling in the wind, but it never hurt to look more than once, to train yourself to do it without even thinking. “So do you think we’re in the calm before the storm or the eye of the storm?” The beta lifted an eyebrow, glancing over at Cole. “After all, they say bad luck comes in threes…”

Cole smirked like a triumphant pup, and laughed to himself, shaking his head at Steven’s dramatics. “No, your attitude makes you a brat.” He glanced at him sidelong. “And your obvious love for video games. If I recall, last year, you nearly had a tantrum because the store had sold out of that one game you really wanted.” He didn’t bother lowering his voice; most, if not all of the wolves behind them had been there, trying not to laugh at Steven’s reaction.
Taking in a deep breath, casual but purposeful, he filtered through the scents with ease, and looked to his Beta. “In threes, hmm?” He mulled that over briefly, chewing on his bottom lip. “Well, after Mara’s reaction to the moon last night, and Andrew’s attack tonight, I’m hoping we’re in the eye.” This month seemed to spell bad news, but hopefully, Steven’s theory would fall through, and the last night of the moon would be peaceful, and signal the end of their little run of bad luck.

“Lies! Lies, all lies,” Steven answered, a slow grin curling on his face. “You’re going senile and imagining things Cole. Another sign of your old age.” The male werewolf would deny to his last breath that he had ever done something as childish as throw a fit over his computer game being sold out or the fact that he had all but dragged the group over their half of town in search of a store that actually had a copy. Then dancing around the shop in glee. That never happened.
Steven would deny it until the next time a computer game he really wanted came out anyway.
He certainly hoped that his theory would fall through; the last thing the Beta wanted was more trouble. Not least because there was always the fear of jinxing things. “Tomorrow will come soon enough, and then we shall find out.”
