Cole smiled casually and nodded. “Sure, sure, whatever you say.” He glanced to the Beta. “So long as you don’t do it again… for a while.” His smile became a brief grin. “Still, I wish I’d had a camera. I could have kept it for emergencies… for those times when you’re a pain in the ass, and I can’t be bothered to argue with you.” That grin became a fraction devious. Cole would never resort to blackmail, of course, especially with any of his pack, but teasing about it could still be fun.
“It makes me wonder how bad things would be if we did keep everyone in the hotel during the moon.” He paused. “Well… almost everyone.” Even as he stood there, he couldn’t help but wonder if it was entirely fair allowing Nerys to work her job on those three days, when everyone else was ‘grounded’. It probably irritated some of the youngsters; those old enough to hold the wolf, but young enough to want to haunt The Onyx during the peak of the cycle, to see if it really brought out ‘the crazies’.

His right eyebrow drifted upwards slightly at the threat of blackmail but otherwise Steven gave no reaction to Cole’s words, preferring instead to adopt a silence that he felt said it all – the Beta wasn’t going to lower himself and dignify that with a response. Even if perhaps Cole had a point about his behaviour being just a tiny bit childish. Steven knew that acting like a big kid didn’t help his status as Beta male but there were some situations where such actions were called for.
It had been a long time since Steven had felt the urge to just let his wolf haunt the streets, to roam the city and an even longer time since he had struggled with the uncontrollable tug of the wolf, howling and breaking free. But he could remember only too clearly what it felt like, the excess energy and coiled tension in you, wanted to break free. Steven didn’t envy the younger pack mates for still having to go through that. “Can you imagine everyone stuck here? We would almost certainly have a fight every month and it would be nice to get though a night without someone suffering a wound.”

Cole knew how Steven ‘ticked’, as it were, and to the Beta’s credit, there were definitely other members of the pack more childish than him, and the Alpha believed that everyone ought to keep at least a little of their free and easy youthfulness with them, even at their age. Just because they were old, that didn’t mean they always had to act as such. Acts of childishness, in moderation, were refreshing to Cole, and reminded him of why they preserved their way of life so passionately.
“It would be nice, but you know as well as I do, Steven, that with a pack this big, a whole night without a wound is asking for a lot.” Cole’s tone was gentle as he spoke, calm, without panic or irritation. He knew that Steven worried; hell, they all did, and that was what pack leaders were for, but if they worried all the time, then it would only wear them down. Cole was still learning the fine tuning of it all, but he had more or less gotten it under control now.

“A wolf can dream, can’t he?” Steven replied, a hint of an easy smile of his face. Sure it would be nice if they got through the night without a wound, but equally he knew that it was unlikely to actually happen. “Fine, how about a night without a bad wound. One that doesn’t leave me unsettled for the rest of the night.” Truthfully, Steven would only feel better about recent events once the sun rose and the younger wolves changed back into their human forms, signifying another moon night over.
Sometimes Steven worried that he wasn’t a particularly good Beta. He knew that he had to have some talent as a leader otherwise Cole wouldn’t have kept him as second – friendship came second to the well being of the pack as a whole and if he wasn’t shaping up then ‘best’ friend or not, someone would have taken his place, to ensure the safety and well being of everyone but even so sometimes – he worried. He supposed it just meant that he would carry on trying his best to look after the pack and muddling through as best he could.

“Of course a wolf can dream.” Cole smiled softly. “That famous speech wasn’t restricted to the humans on this planet… or at least I hope it wasn’t.” He was in a rare, creatively mischievous mood, but that didn’t mean he would actively seek out any kind of ‘fun’ or entertainment beyond what he had right now, and right now, that was Steven… but his old friend never ceased to keep him busy in one aspect or another, whether it was making him laugh, or keeping him apprised of what was going on beyond their walls. It was what not only made Steven a very dear friend, but a perfect Beta, in Cole’s eyes.
“And I’m with you. One night without some kind of bloodshed would be nice, definitely.” He sighed, and looked to his companion. “A wolf can dream, after all.” His smile returned, before he was back to gazing out across the skyline of Los Angeles, with all its blinking lights and bustling nightly activity.

“It was said by a human and I’m sure he didn’t have people like… us in mind when he said it,” Steven smiled brightly at Cole, canines slightly more exposed than they would normally be on the male werewolf, during nights without the silver orb hung fully exposed in the sky. To be honest, he had felt slightly restless before Cole had arrived, the wolf pulling at him – not that he could show such restlessness in front of the other pack members. Playing off his Alpha and reliving some of the pent up energy that way was fine, that way he didn’t lose any respect. Whining like a newly born pup up at the moon might have.
“We should come up with a werewolf version,” he suggested lightly, gaze slipping back to the city spread out in front of him. As much as he would like to devote his full attention onto Cole it was part of his job to watch out for dangers and the like, just as he knew the other wolf would. Even at the heart of their territory they couldn’t afford to drop their guard. “Play around with the words, make them fit us.”

Cole wondered if Steven knew how respected he was. He often saw subtle hints in the other male wolf; hints too subtle for most to catch, detected only be those like himself, or Dia or Heidi… those who had known the Beta male a long time, and learned his habits and mannerisms. He fully expected Steven sometimes didn’t appreciate just how trusted and respected he was, but that was perhaps what made him such a good leader; it hadn’t gone to his head, giving him a level, modest approach to problems that any arrogance would only exacerbate.
“What?” Cole began with a soft, calm chuckle as he looked to his old friend. “‘A wolf can dream’ doesn’t work?” He pulled in a long, refreshing lungful of the air around them, cooler than down at street level because of the height, but still somewhat warm and comforting. “I’m not sure how else you can twist the words to make them fit,” he pointed out, tilting his head curiously, wondering if Steven already had something else in mind.

Steven thought he could live without the respect, so long as it didn’t affect Cole in a negative fashion. Respect could wait behind keeping everyone alive and safe. Still, those were thoughts that only rarely plagued the Beta wolf, normally when something had gone wrong within the pack and those it looked out for.
“Sure ‘a wolf can dream’ works,” Steven agreed casually. “As for the rest… well, if I told you, I would have to then kill you to make sure you didn’t steal my ideas. People steal ideas all the time. I know it happens, for I have seen it in stories and the television wouldn’t lie.” He rolled his eyes as he spoke, having a very low opinion of the TV. It was good to use as a screen to play computer games on, but aside from that he thought it rather a mistake in human invention.

Cole couldn’t help but laugh. Steven’s ability to be spontaneous and quietly amusing after so long was rejuvenating, in a way. After the events earlier in the evening, he was thankful that the Beta could just be himself, and therefore be helpful, even if he didn’t realise he was doing it. Cole had never regretted his decision about Steven, when he’d asked the other male to step up as Beta. He doubted he ever would regret it, and that was comforting.
“Yeah, yeah… sure. Whatever you say, Steve,” Cole remarked, fully expecting some kind of comment about how he hated that name. For centuries, it had been ‘Steven’… nothing else. “We both know you could never take me.” He even quirked a very confident brow, and glanced at his friend, head tilted at an angle, slightly — albeit fake — smug smile in place.

“Steve?” Steven repeated slowly with an expression of distaste on his face. “Steve?” The Beta wolf repeated as he almost spat out the word. “Oh Coulson that is hitting way below the belt.” Pervious musing on his ability to be the best person for his position along with talks of wolf freedom and everything else that they had been pondering on was instantly forgotten as he focused on this new and much more important topic of conversation.
“Maybe this… Steve you speak of would lose, but Steven would completely beat you.” He matched the grin from Cole, keeping his expression just as smug as the other wolf. Part of him was annoyed at the nickname but a far larger part was amused. Not that he would ever let Cole see that.

Before he laughed, Cole gave a small but deep growl at the use of his full, original name; the one he had been called by before his parents had taken a surname for their family. He had simply been Coulson, and nothing else, but when the Stanton had been added to help them blend in with the developing human world around them, he had shortened his given name so it wouldn’t clash with the adopted one. Not many in the pack knew about it, but of course, the other leaders did, and the eldest pack members.
“Then why haven’t you challenged me for leadership… Steven?” he asked, standing up straighter, hands still down on the ledge, head leaned over ‘curiously’, brows raised in inquiry. “If you could ‘completely beat me’, why would you settle for second best, hmm?” He grinned, waiting for the inevitable retort… hell, maybe they’d even start one of their brotherly ‘spars’ right here and now.

“It would upset Dia,” Steven replied instantly, tone flippant. “You know me, I would so hate to upset a lady.” He smirked at the other wolf, almost sticking his tongue out but resisting at the last moment. The deep growl should have unsettled him or at the very least caused him to back down slightly but Steven simply seemed to take it as encouragement, subtly – or not so subtly – egging his friend on.
“Anyway, being leader…” Steven shrugged, cheeky smile still present. “It seems to have aged you. A lot.” He was half hoping for a playful spar, although he had to be honest, not while he was still perched on the edge of the roof. He was restless and playful, not reckless or suicidal.

Cole rolled his eyes, a clear ‘whatever you say’ if ever there was one. He even managed a wry smile and sighed in what might have been a dramatic fashion had it not been for the fact that no one would, for a second, believe he was being sincere. He was glad Steven didn’t back down from the growl, but then, Steven knew him too well; he knew the sound wasn’t in any way angry or intended to be intimidating. Cole knew Steven would never be a threat to him, and knew the Beta male would never be anything but a help. It was all just in good fun. Even at their age, they were allowed to be silly once in a while.
“But you know,” Cole began in response to Steven’s age barb, eyes narrowing thoughtfully even as they seemed to flicker amber, just subtly, “I look good for my age. Some of us aren’t so lucky…” Another sigh. “But I hear they make products for that now. You should invest in some… maybe you can find some good advice on the internet.”

“I think moisturisers and all that are more your kind of thing Cole. If you’re not already using them.” Steven sniffed softly, a mixture of disgust and smelling the air, as if he was trying to work out if his friend used the sweet smelling products. “I certainly wouldn’t put it past you…”
He stood suddenly and stepped back with the grace and confidence that he would land safely on the proper part of the roof that only came with hundreds of years of being a werewolf. Steven felt in tune with both sides of himself and often used them as best he could, even if the situation was not the best. He smirked again, eyes filling black for a moment in response to the shift in Cole’s eyes. “Or are you going to pretend that girly smell is caused by Dia spilling something on you?”

Cole laughed again, an open, relatively light sound. He didn’t have the deepest voice anyway, and his laugh, when unrestrained like it was now, always made him sound much younger than he really was, and not just because he had remained in his physical prime, halting in the ageing process in his twenties. It was one of many perks for pureborn werewolves, unlike bitten wolves; if bitten past the physical prime, it didn’t regenerate… it was all very complicated. Cole had never had to worry about it too much, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t aware of how it all worked, in case someone ever asked.
“Oh, cheap shot.” He turned on his friend, eyes flickering again as Steven’s gaze blackened. “We both know I’m above all that vanity… and Dia didn’t spill something on me. If anyone’s clumsy out of us leaders, Steven, I’d have to say that’s you, not my mate.” He grinned. “The girly smell, as we both know, is just your imagination. A shame… that you’re losing your faculties already…” Cole sighed ‘sadly’, and shook his head.
