Being content with her place and role within the pack didn’t stop her from worrying on very rare occasions that she was somehow failing her family by remaining a pack member and having no desire to learn even the most basic of fighting moves. It would just be an embarrassment to see her try and fail in something that was clearly as simple and as natural as breathing for some wolves. When faced with those such as Liluye who wanted to become a fighter and who was constantly striving to become just that those vague feelings manifested themselves even stronger, becoming almost a niggling presence in the back of her mind.
Most of the time she was hardly aware of her feelings in that respect, the dreams of her mind taking up most, if not all of her concentration at one time. Even with the worry in some corner of her mind, the unnamed fear she rarely took the time to try and define or understand the strange sensation. It was only really at the times like this, with a fighter appealing to others for aid to help protect the pack and the Alpha’s that Jess ever really realised what she was feeling and why. The memory would soon fade however, to be replaced by less distressing thoughts once the other wolves had left and the warm feeling of security replaced it. So she stood quietly to the side, wind catching gently at some locks of hair and twilling them around her face as she let the scene with the fighters play out in front of her.

Annelise caught Liluye’s look and gave her a little nod. Annelise was all for her going along, but she wouldn’t be. Oh, she wanted to, there was no doubt about that and everyone would likely know that she was itching to go along, but it was time for Liluye to go out with a group that didn’t include her. She knew that Liluye would be able to handle it and it was time to prove that not only was the other female ready, but that Annelise knew that.
Looking back to Kennedy, she said, “I’ll help hold down the fort here, but next time fighters are needed to go along, I’m there.”

If there was going to be a group leaving the hotel, there was no doubt that Kai and Noah would be among them, and already, she was eager to agree on their behalf. Some might say she and Noah were joined at the hip, and honestly, who could really argue with that? It wasn’t like it was a bad thing in any way, and Kai would have words with anyone who saw fit to challenge their bond. That was, if Noah didn’t beat her to it.
Letting Liluye and Annelise speak first, Kai then gave her head a nod. “We’re in,” she said, Kennedy nodding in response, knowing that she meant herself and Noah at her side. Kai’s gaze travelled across the roof to the pair seated against the edge, and she had to wonder. But her thoughts were kept secret, locked away inside of herself; her opinions didn’t have a place here, right now, and besides, any and all choices pertaining to the matter occupying Kai’s thoughts were down to Cole and Dia, and the Alphas alone.
Casting a ready smile at her friend at her side, she headed for the door that Kennedy was holding open for those who were intending to tag along and protect their leaders.

Once the others left the rooftop, Annelise stretched, turning her face skywards for a moment. She would likely wander around the hotel a bit later, more from having nothing else to do than anything else. The fighter was never quite sure what to do with herself when there was a need for fighters to go out and she stayed behind. It wasn’t like she minded, of course- there had to be fighters left at the hotel, just in case something happened and they were needed and she didn’t mind volunteering to be one of those if it seemed like the group leaving already had enough members- but she often found herself a bit listless at those times.
Finished with her stretch, the female pushed back a bit of hair and offered Jess a smile. “Nice night out, isn’t it?”

With the majority of the fighters descending back into the hotel, no doubt to meet up with Cole or whoever else was going, Jess could let herself sink back into the warm hazy of comfort and security that normally filled her mind. All distressing thoughts of somehow failing those she deeply loved and cared about faded for the time being, as she had known they would without the constant evidence and reminders here and now that something was going on, something that Jess could never be a part of or even fully understand what it was.
The wind was still playing with the very tips of her hair as Annelise spoke, reminding Jess that not every fighter had left, even if she hadn’t immediately realised that. It wasn’t that the blond fighter was unimportant to her – in fact, Jess counted Annelise as one of her better friends and could only hope the feeling was returned – but rather her inescapable nature ensuring that she had been blind and dumb to the world around her. She smiled back at her friend, gaze a little distant but kind all the same. “It is. I like the way the wind seems almost alive as it dances with our hair and against our skin.”

Annelise knew that it was good for her to not involve herself in every fighter situation; it taught her patience and reinforced- though needlessly so since she knew this for an absolute fact- that not only could they handle things without her, but that she was capable of helping hold down the fort. Though she greatly enjoyed going out and doing what fighters do, sometimes it was nice to stay back and show that she was perfectly capable of putting her fighter instincts aside while others went out to do what needed to be done.
The feeling was indeed returned, Annelise seeing Jess as one of her better friends in the pack, though certainly everyone was considered a friend in some way or another. She sometimes wished that she could be blind to the world around her, lost in her own little space. It would have been nice sometimes, but the blonde supposed that not everyone could remove themselves from the world that easily. It wouldn’t have been a good thing if they could all just get lost in their own minds- she knew that- but she sometimes thought it might be nice. “I like it too. In a city the size of Los Angeles, it’s nice to have the little things to appreciate.”

She had the utmost faith in Annelise to know when she was and when she wasn’t needed. It required clarity of thought that was missing in Jess; indeed when she had been a child one of the main complaints her parents had voiced was their youngest daughter never seemed to realise when she was in the way or when her mother and father needed some grown up alone time. Time which somehow seemed acceptable whenever her older sister wanted to interrupt. The unfair balance should have upset her but it seemed to just brush over her, as most things did.
Somehow that indifference had only served to annoy her sister, the other Keane sibling telling anyone who would listen that the only reason Jess had shortened her name from Jessica was because it was too long to remember. Both her parents and her sister had left long ago however and whatever the truth, it was buried by the past.
It was rare indeed for people to prefer her method of getting through life as opposed to actually being aware of things but had Annelise actually said as much, Jess would have been equal parts flustered as how to respond and touched. Compliments were greatly treasured by her for as long as she remembered them. “It’s the little things that are worth the most. To me anyway.” Jess offered, shrugging lightly as she spoke. “Makes me want to go for a walk outside but with something going on with the fighters that probably isn’t too smart.”

Annelise had always been pretty good at figuring out when she was or wasn’t needed, though like everyone, she could mistakes and had made her fair share of them. Occasions came up when it was hard to figure out if she was needed or not, but she could usually make an educated guess and have everyone involved come out relatively unscathed. When she was younger, she could usually be persuaded to go along to talk to or see someone when she felt like it might not been an appropriate time, but she hadn’t come across anyone that could persuade her in such a way since she had left Ireland.
She knew that being aware of ones surrounding was important- especially for a fighter- but sometimes, it really would have been extremely nice to just let herself get lost in her thoughts and let everything pass around her. The world around them could, quite frankly, be a pain and sometimes, an escape from it would be very, very nice. Because of that, she thought that Jess had the right approach to things. If she was lost in her own world, she didn’t have to deal with the real one so much.
“The little things are worth a lot more than some might think,” she said with a little smile, nodding at the last comment Jess made. “Probably not, but this would be the perfect night for a walk otherwise.”

As the years passed, Jess had seemed to retreat more and more into her own worlds, only coming out of them when she was with those of the pack she treasured and counted among her friends. It was hard for her to get to know the recent additions to the pack, even though she tried her best to be friendly and kind to them. It was hard to trust them, to know that she could be herself with them, without any thoughts that she was strange or odd to find such pleasure in the workings and creations of her own minds.
“A pity…” Jess sighed wistfully, looking out over the roof at the rest of the tops of buildings, the world carrying on around them. “Oh well, I guess there are things to do here.” Even though she would have loved to go for a walk, Jess knew better than to go during times of danger or to go without sticking close to whichever fighter came as well. As much as the past didn’t seem to overly matter to her or be able to be conjured up into words whenever needed, the memory of the day she had somehow wandered off alone and then been attacked was as fresh in her mind as anything that had happened in the last few days.

Annelise figured that since she couldn’t get lost in her own world as often as would be nice, she would just have to deal with the real world. That wasn’t all bad, but sometimes it could be more of a pain than she was really able to deal with and not need a good outlet of some sort or another. The real world had to be dealt with, but Annelise liked to think that that was why there were people like her- to deal with the real world things that she could change so others wouldn’t have to.
“It is a pity, but it could be worse. At least we have the roof and the courtyard we can put to use if we want fresh air. Not as good as a walk, but…” She gave a shrug and looked out over the city again. She found herself wondering what was exactly was going on, but contented herself with knowing that she would find out when the others got back. There was always someone willing to tell her about what happened during the times that she stayed behind to help watch out for the pack home and the others rather than going out and doing her thing as a fighter.
She looked back to Jess and gave a nod. “There’s always something to do if you look long and hard enough.” The fighter sometimes just couldn’t be bothered enough to look that long or that hard.

The fact that not only were there people such as Annelise who were able to deal unflinchingly with the real world and all the harsh realities that existed within it but more importantly that there were people willing to do what needed to be done, sometimes so that those less suited to making those choices meant a lot to Jess. She knew without ever really thinking it that without the grace and good will of people like her pack mates, her family and friends, then her own life would be exceedingly difficult. The brown haired werewolf only wished she was better at expressing her thoughts and feelings, so that she could show them how much it meant to her.
“There’s always the kind of walks you can take in your mind. Endless streets in any city, anywhere in the world.” Not that it was the same, to let your mind wander where your physical body couldn’t, but sometimes Jess found that it was almost better in a way. There was no cell to hold your mind back in one place, something she clung to. In your mind you could be anything, do anything, and face down anything. In her mind, Jess wasn’t so paralyzed with fear when it came to vampires. But then, that wasn’t reality, but rather the complete opposite.

For as long as Annelise could remember, being a fighter was part of who she was. When she was too young to be a fighter, she had wanted to be one and once she was old enough, she was training every day in order to prepare for the day when she had her wolf under control and could really begin preparing herself. Then, when she had finally made it to full fighter status, she had put even more of herself into making herself into the best fighter she could be. She did what she could and while it never felt like it was quite enough, she knew that she was doing all that was within her power to do. Annelise would gladly do more if it was asked of her- or if the opportunity to do so actually presented itself.
“Very true,” the blonde agreed with a nod and a little smile. “Nowhere in the world is off limits that way.” She did, admittedly, take such walks in her mind, almost always taking herself back to Ireland and the area where the old pack had lived. It had always been a beautiful place and when she imagined herself there, her family and friends were always there as well, happy and well. She missed the old pack and Ireland terribly, but she really was happy in Los Angeles with the pack that was now her family. There was no denying that.

Occasionally she wondered what that would be like, to want and yearn for something so badly, a thing that if you didn’t have, you were somehow less than yourself. Incomplete. Unfinished. While in a way perhaps, Jess could apply that to her own life in terms of how she felt when it came to Kate, caring for another person outside of yourself seemed different because you could be happy and complete without someone like Kate in your life. Not that Jess understood fully how she felt when it came to the male fighter, all she knew was that things seemed clearer, sharper and more easy to understand when he was around.
Maybe that was how Annelise felt when it came to fighting, perhaps when she wasn’t a fighter life was more of a fog, but working out how to ask without the question coming out strange was a problem and she knew it, even in her own special world.
Ireland was a place she had never personally visited, although it was on her list. She’d seen quite a bit of the world really, travelling with the pack as it moved from place to place before finally choosing this city to settle in. Jess didn’t know how long they planned to remain here; probably for as long as they could or until Cole decided it just wasn’t safe. It wasn’t her place to wonder or question that and so she didn’t, content where she was, because there was always memory to take her back to Europe and the other places they had visited, even if none had really grabbed her heart or been considered a ‘home’ country. Home was the pack to her, not the place.

Annelise knew all too well how caring for someone so completely could make someone feel whole, but she also knew all too well the heartbreak it could bring. While she wasn’t against ever finding someone else, her whole focus was on being a fighter and a friend. So long as she was busy and had something to do, she was perfectly happy. After all, if she kept herself busy enough- even if just too busy thinking about other things- then she didn’t have to think about the past or anything else she preferred to keep out of mind. More than anything, being a fighter was what kept her from allowing herself to think about less pleasant times; it seemed to help her keep herself in the present which, honestly, was best.
She had occasionally wondered if she would ever end up back in Ireland and, if she did, how she would take it. It was something the fighter couldn’t be certain of, but she supposed that it was a bridge she would cross when she got there- if she ever did. Until then, she had all she needed- family, friends and a purpose. Really, what more did she need right then?

Maybe that was another way to look at things, to bring the whole world into a clearer kind of focus. If you were so busy, always doing something, be it training or acting like a fighter, then perhaps the world made a whole lot more sense than it did right now. Perhaps it wasn't a fog of shapes viewed through a mirror dimly, images only flickering and coming into focus whenever they were nearby. Even Kate - although admittedly to a lesser degree - was a victim of the dimming, when he wasn't about, and no matter how much the fact distressed Jess, she couldn't seem to change the way her brain worked.
Far better in the long run to ignore it, to not think about it and just smile, be pleasant and enjoy the moment as it happened. The future would become the present soon enough and the past was unchangeable so it was pointless to worry about it. Fine words that mostly worked, although some days were of course harder than others. "We could imagine a place together?" Jess offered after a few moments of dreamy contemplation. "Take it in turns to create part of a world, and see where we end up, what we become?" Because dream worlds and imaginations were fine in themselves, but they were made far better when another joined in. Jess felt she would be honoured to create a world with her friend.
