There were wolves of every kind in Cole's pack and that was one of the things Kennedy had always loved about the big family she had been born into. There were jokers and pranksters, fighters and defenders, mother hens and carers, so many quirky and unique characters that she had taken great joy in getting to know over the years of her life. So many of the wolves in the pack were complicated individuals with many layers and she and Will were no exceptions just as those like Jeremy and Violet were not.
"You know," Kennedy said, reaching out and using the tip of one finger to wipe from the inner rim of the tub before licking it clean inside her mouth,"that's exactly what I said." She smiled at her friend before rocking sideways to bump her shoulder and arm gently against his. "The others have been asking about you, you know," she told him, her voice having softened. "They miss you."

Will watched Kennedy with a quiet kind of smile. He had hardly been able to appreciate her presence in the heavy fog that had settled around him. His own misery and heartache had been so great that everything else around him had become inconsequential. The pain was still there, just under the surface, but Kennedy had certainly helped him get his head above water. If he continued down this road, maybe he would start to feel like himself again.
The Scottish wolf's smile became somewhat sheepish when Kennedy made mention of their fellow packmates. "I haven't exactly been approachable, have I?" he murmured.
Considering he could hardly remember the last time he'd set foot outside his room, that might've been an understatement. Will gave the melting ice cream a careful prod with the point of his spoon and sighed. If it weren't for Kennedy, there was no telling how much longer he would have stayed like this.

Reaching up with one hand she pulled her loosely curled hair around the back of her neck so that it hung over one shoulder instead of both. The sheepish smile on Will's face wasn't necessary but she understood it. Over the years Kennedy liked to think she had become something of an expert when it came to the body language of her fighters, her family within a family. Will was no exception, not by a long shot, and she looked at him sitting there beside her on the end of his own bed with a tired slump to his shoulders and a self-deprecating kind of air about him as he said those words.
"Everyone understands," she assured him softly, lifting her hand and rubbing it up and down his back a couple of times before setting it down beside her hip again. "If nothing else they understood you needed some time and some space to feel the things you've been feeling without feeling confronted or crowded." Her eyes met his and her smile returned. "They really do miss you. They'll be happy to see you again when you're ready to come out." He could leave his room in his own time though, she wanted to make that clear to him. She hadn't come here to rush him, she had come here to make sure he was all right and that they weren't losing him.

The brief contact, Kennedy's hand running along his back, seemed to reach something deep inside of him. Will felt his wolf stir and, subdued as the creature had been since Heidi's leaving, that was certainly something. Just another reason why he needed pack. That physical contact, simple a gesture as it was, had already done wonders for the Scottish wolf's morale. Some of the heavy hunch in his shoulders seemed to lifted and, for a moment at least, he felt more like himself.
When Will smiled at his senior fighter, the expression nearly warmed through his eyes. "Aye," he murmured. "Wouldn't expect any different from the likes of you all." The ice cream received another prod with the spoon before Will finally set both aside. "Kennedy... there's no telling how long I would have kept myself cooped up like this if you hadn't kept trying. You realize that, right?"

That smile was so much more like the Will she knew and loved than the ones he had shown so far that evening that Kennedy felt her chest flush with warmth and relief. He was on the mend. He wasn't quite there yet, he would need more time, but he was on his way. That was enough for now. Kennedy would continue to check up on him and watch out for him as was her right and responsibility but she had faith in his strength and resolve. Will would recover in his own time and they could continue to rely on him regardless of what had happened.
"I wasn't about to let you go through this alone," she told him softly and with all the compassion at her disposal, her smile gentle but affectionate. There was nothing Kennedy wouldn't do for those she called her own and she had known Will for years; she loved him dearly like she had loved her own flesh and blood and nothing would ever change that. "You know me," she went on, her smile growing a little and adopting a quietly playful edge, "I'm too stubborn for my own good sometimes. I just don't know when to quit."

The male fighter exhaled on a quiet huff of laughter. "Aye, don't I know it," he grumbled good-naturedly. "You've got willpower the likes of which I've never seen, that's for certain. I'm surprised that you've refrained for hoisting me out by my ears."
He had teased Kennedy about that mile-wide stubborn streak before and the fact that he was willing to do it now meant he truly was mending. In the time that the senior fighter had shouldered her way into his room, Will had managed to eat, smile and even laugh some. It was nothing short of a relief, knowing that he could do those things again.
Will wasn't beyond repair. It was just that this particular stretch of healing might take longer than what he was used to.

Kennedy was indeed a stubborn she-wolf but she had long since come to believe that she needed to be. She wasn't just a member of the pack after all and she wasn't even just a fighter. She was senior fighter and that was a position that came with a world of responsibility. Really it put her right underneath the Betas in terms of dominance and gave her a hierarchical position she had never anticipated but it was one she would never dream of shying away from. Stubbornness served her well in her role and so she kept it in check and let it aid her in her responsibilities rather than trying to stamp it out.
"It crossed my mind," she teased, giving his arm and shoulder another bump with her own with an affectionately amused smile on her face. "Just be glad I didn't send Jeremy or Violet in here after you," she went on, regarding him with a mock seriousness in her eyes as though there was no worse fate imaginable. Who knew what the terrible twosome might have concocted in order to try and get Will out of his room.

Will rocked with the bump of the female's shoulder against his, growling as though displeased. "The term 'cruel and unusual punishment' comes to mind," he rumbled. "You don't joke about those two. If anyone can induce a stroke in a wolf, it's them."
Not that he meant it. Well, not really. Jeremy and Violet -- along with a number of younger wolves -- seemed to have reserves of boundless energy that could hardly be fathomed. They were a part of why William was willing to fight for Cole and Dia. Even so, when Violet or Devon decided it was high time to cause some kind of mischief or another, Will had to fight the urge to lock himself in a closet somewhere.
Then again, they hadn't successfully brought down the hotel. Yet.

Kennedy couldn't help but laugh, nodding her head in agreement and letting her gaze roam around the room that was so very Will; it had a character to it and everything about it, from the positioning of the furniture to the shirt draped over the back of the desk chair and the half-draw of the drapes was just him. It made her smile. As her eyes found his face again she said, "I'll hold off on sending the terrible twosome in here for now." She paused and offered him a smile. "Since you ate some ice cream and all." A mischievous light rose into her eyes and her smile briefly became a grin.
Jeremy and Violet and all the other young and mischievous wolves like them were handfuls to say the least but the pack would be worse off without them. There would be less smiles and laughter and who else would entertain them on those dreary days that even sunny California cities like Los Angeles occasionally fell victim to? No, she wouldn't change anything of them in the least, not even Jeremy with his many hair dye experimentations and other elaborate schemes. At least he seemed to be fixed on Kate. For now.
