“Ha ha, very funny.” If his spoon had been plastic, he might have tossed it at her as she retreated out of the room, but considering it was metal, he opted against it. Either he would miss altogether and break something, or his gift with aiming would fail him, and he’d peg her in the back of the head, or a shoulder, and frankly, he didn’t fancy hurting his own partner, no matter how accidental that was.
While Sarah was gone, he watched a little more of the movie, trying to remember how much of it they had missed while they’d conversed, and shrugging it off when he couldn’t piece it together properly in his head. It didn’t really matter anyway. They’d seen it plenty of times, and it wasn’t as if they wouldn’t watch it again.

Sarah returned, looking far more relaxed -- indeed, almost childlike in her slightly oversized pajamas. She was not a particularly short woman, although Chris could dwarf just about anybody, but the baggy sleeping garments made her look smaller than she really was.
"Coffeeeeeee," she announced, smelling it as it brewed. "How d'you want yours this time?"

He glanced over the back of the sofa as she passed around behind him, and he chuckled at her. “You look like a kid in those things,” he said to her, his tone conversational, switching topics easily to answer her question, “and I’ll take it white, with sugar.”
Finishing his ice cream, he stood to head into the kitchen, to put the bowl in the sink. He glanced to the percolator as he cleared the doorway, detecting the smell of the coffee, like his partner, and smiling. “Okay, yeah, definitely not sleeping tonight.” He laughed to himself. “Oh well.”

"But a cute kid," Sarah countered. "And you're welcome to not-sleep on the sofa, if you want, but if you start snoring I will kick you." She grinned.
She removed the full pot from the percolator and paused over a mug. "How white is white?" she asked. "White as in light brown? Or white as in 'I'd like a little coffee with my milk, please'?"

“I don’t snore,” he told her quickly, as if the response was now so automatic that he didn’t even have to think about forming the words before they tumbled out of his mouth. Turning his back on the sink, wiping one hand over the other for no real reason, he replied, “White as in light brown. Otherwise I’d have asked for hot milk.” He smirked rather boyishly, and leaned against the counter.
Either he was going to be hyperactive at work tomorrow, which would lend itself to some interesting possibilities in general, or he was going to be groggy and… just plain cranky. Which wouldn’t lead to interesting possibility so much as preferably-avoided ones…

Sarah prepared the mug for him as requested, but eyed him as she slid it across the counter. "If you're all wound up tomorrow at work, I'm faking sick and leaving early," she told him. "Benny can put up with your hyperactive ass by himself."
She smirked at him over her own cup of coffee. She would never leave him to his own devices, and he knew it well, but half the fun of threatening and being threatened by Chris was the fact that neither would ever follow through. In their line of work, where threats were a very real part of the job, they needed their own brand of screwball interaction in order to stay sane.

“Y’know,” he began as he reached over to her side of the kitchen and took the mug from the counter, “watching Benny freak out would probably be the highlight of my day.” He smirked. “That’s not a bad idea. I could get someone to take pictures, and everyone could laugh at poor Benny’s expense.” He sipped carefully from the rim, blowing the steam from the surface for a moment beforehand.
If putting up with the informant was going to be the least of his problems the next day, then maybe work wouldn’t be so bad after all. They would have to drive to meet the guy, but that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, when it came right down to it. Getting out of the station could be so refreshing sometimes, really.

"That's the real reason you were in favor of all the LAPD cars being outfitted with internal video cameras, wasn't it?" Sarah challenged. "Not for safety reasons or anything like that -- you just wanted to be able to film what happens when you spaz on an informant and freak them out. I'm onto you, mister."

“They have cameras?” He lowered his mug, looking right at her, before he narrowed his eyes. “You mean they’re all spying on me, to make sure I don’t spaz at informants?” He set down his mug, hands on the counter behind him as he leaned back lightly. “Hmm, this is a sinister development… I shall have to contact my sources.”
A silly, faint smirk had slipped into place on his features; one that Sarah knew all too well. “I think the words we’re looking for is ‘they’re onto me. Should I be frightened?”

"Oh, you just wish they were all spying on you," she retorted. Noting the expression on his face, she adopted almost a mirroring one on her own. "Actually, for your information, the car you and I usually use has been rigged with a hidden camera. Not by the higher-ups, though. Holly stuck it in there so she can continue stalking you."

“I knew it,” he stage-whispered, hand cupping his chin thoughtfully with something of a dramatic sigh. “There’s no escape.” He shrugged his shoulders. “Well, when a woman starts bugging your work car, what can you do?” Of course, he was, naturally, relieved it was only a joke. If he ever found out Holly had actually bugged their car, he would be requesting a change of vehicles, even in the middle of the night.
“So, the question is… are you her accomplice, or a turncoat? Did you help her fit the camera, or are you betraying her by telling me this highly-secret information?”

"Well, now." Sarah affected a serious look, fingering her coffee mug. "That's a very highly classified and valuable piece of information, right there. Because if I'm her accomplice, then obviously I'm not going to just admit it to you outright. And if I'm a turncoat, admitting to that would give you some prime opportunities for blackmail. So it's not something I'm about to answer lightly. The question is, how much is that little tidbit of knowledge worth to you, shepherd-my-love?"

“Well, I’d hardly blackmail you,” he told her in a breezy manner. “Because the only other conspirator in this wicked plot is Holly, and… I’m hardly likely to threaten to go to her. You’d see right through that petty charade.” He sipped from his mug, and then set it down again quietly.
He considered things, or at least pretended to do so, hiding his smile with ease. Part of being a good cop was being able to hide your true emotions and expressions, and on top of that… well, he’d always had a good poker face. “Well now, let me think… I’d say it’s worth a day’s lunch, but I always buy your lunch anyway.” His smirk showed itself, but only for a moment. “Let me see…”

"You do not always buy my lunch," Sarah interjected. "Granted, you buy my lunch more often than I buy yours, but still. Not always."
She waited, with feigned impatience, while he tried to decide what he was willing to offer as a bribe. "Chocolate's always good," she added playfully.

“No, I don’t always buy it, but I’d say I buy it about seventy-five percent of the time.” A cheeky grin lit up his face, and his eyes were alight with amusement and a hint of mischief. “And believe me, I’m quickly coming to the conclusion that you’re using me for my money.” He sighed, shaking his head as he leaned back on the counter.
“Chocolate? Well, that one’s easy.” He shrugged, smiling easily. “Chocolate, I can manage, and afford on a city salary.” He lifted his mug. “Okay, you got yourself a deal, Masterson, though you drive a hard bargain.”
