"Using you for your money?" Sarah repeated. "I'm offended. If I were going to use someone for their money, don't you think I'd pick someone who had some? Or at least had more than I do? Give me a little credit, please."

“Ouch.” He laid a hand over his heart, but only for a moment, smirking. “Okay, you have a point, but that still hurts, Masterson.” He sipped from his coffee again, setting it down on the counter at a safe distance from his hands.
“And how do you know I don’t have some kind of secret stash of money, anyway? I could have been keeping it a secret all this time, waiting for the perfect moment to announce it, and amaze you with my riches.” True, there was no such thing, but Chris also knew that this conversation had warped so far from reality that he was allowed to be silly.

Sarah wondered, idly, why he kept calling her by her last name. That was the second time in less than five minutes. She didn't mind, but it was a little unusual; as a general rule, he was practically the only person at the station who made use of her first name.
At the very peculiar pronouncement, she closed one eye, fixing him with a sardonic look. "After four years, you haven't yet found the perfect moment to announce that you're rich?" she challenged, taking another sip of coffee. "News flash, Sheps. I'm not gonna be amazed by your riches unless one of two things happens. Either I get some kind of really dazzling present, in which case I might confess an inkling of amazement, or you marry me, since then by the laws of California I automatically get half." Her green eyes sparkled with mischief over her mug. She could be every bit as silly as he could -- probably more, if she really wanted to try.

“So, really, if you get the second, you’d have to get the first too.” He waved his hand from left to right to add a visual to his words. “Because you can’t marry someone without buying them some kind of dazzling present, in this case a ring, and… why am I encouraging this kind of thing? You can’t have half of my riches, unless… I say so.” Either the beer had bubbled into his head again, or the sugar from the ice cream and coffee was starting to take its toll.
“So there.” He almost, almost, poked his tongue out at her, but he managed to refrain from doing so, settling for an ‘I win’ sort of smirk.

"I dunno, Sheppy, why are you encouraging this kind of thing?" Sarah countered, laughing. She took another drink of her coffee, pretending to give the whole thing serious thought.
"It had better be a damn nice rock," she told him. "And you definitely need to work on your proposal technique. And if you don't want me laying claim to half your Monopoly money and DVD collection, you'd better get a prenup."

“Well, I thought maybe I’d just slip you a note across the desk, y’know; ‘marry me, thanks’, and that would be it.” He shrugged, affecting a nonplussed posture and expression. “Quick and easy. No muss, no fuss.” He was ready for a hearty swat at his shoulder, at least. “And I’ll make sure to get legal consultation ASAP,” he added, quickly smothering a grin after it tried to take over his face.
This was bordering on a record of silliness for them, he imagined, but in four years as partners, they’d had their moments, and no shortness of entertaining, downright random ones. Besides, they had a long day ahead of them tomorrow; they were entitled to a little fun in order to prepare for that.

Sarah declined to swat, opting instead to laugh. "Actually," she admitted, "as proposals go, I've heard worse. Well, heard of worse."
She could also, admittedly, imagine many worse fates than ending up married to her partner, whom she adored. Heck, they were (in some respects) practically married already, and she wasn't the only one who thought so. If the rumor she'd picked up was to be believed, some of the LAPD detectives had actually investigated the sergeants to find out whether they weren't secretly married or otherwise involved.
For some odd reason, Sarah's mind was called to that awful movie which had come out a few years earlier, My Best Friend's Wedding. She laughed again, but...well, they were being silly on purpose, so why not mention it? If nothing else, it could be worth it to see the look on his face.
"Okay," she said, "I'll tell you what. If we're both still floundering in the sea of craptacular romance a year from now, pass me the note."

“Uh oh… Sarah Masterson, are you suggesting one of those TV movie pacts?” His eyes were bright with amusement, and he chuckled, reaching for his mug again. The idea was entertaining, of course, but he would never dream of doing something like that. He adored Sarah right back, but he had grown up old-fashioned; people should never be arranged… they should be ‘destined’. But then, they were being silly.
“Why, the rumours could be scandalous,” he continued, eyeing her from where he stood across the small kitchen. “Just imagine the break room chatter. Everyone averts their eyes and pretends not to talk about us whenever we pass by.”

"Oh, fine, break my heart." Sarah grinned at him. "But I hate to be the one to break it to you, darling. They already do that."
She hesitated. Maybe he hadn't heard.
"Apparently, a few months back the detectives were actually checking that out," she said, serious now. "From what I've heard, there was a small, private investigation to find out once and for all whether we were hiding our real relationship. Somebody watched that Macgruder and Loud show, or whatever it was called, a few too many times in the '80s and thought maybe we were secretly married." She chuckled into her coffee. "Some people, huh?"

“Well… clearly,” Chris began, turning his mug in his hand, looking down into the half-empty container, “they have nothing better to do with their time.” He gave her a trademark Chris Tyler smile, shrugged reassuringly, and gulped down a little more coffee. He wasn’t going to get a wink of sleep tonight… and god help the team tomorrow. He would probably snap at half of them and freak out the rest. It was bound to be interesting, either way.
Or exhausting. Then again, that’s a given. Any case that contained the name ‘Donnelly’ was an instant headache for him, and this one was bound to be no exception. He wasn’t exactly looking forward to it…

Continued from: L.A. Sun; Parking Garage
She wasn't happy about having to park in the street, but it was better than getting towed, had she risked snagging a spot in the parking garage. Being a fairly regular visitor, Holly knew the code to allow her to enter the building after hours and before long, she found herself at the door to her best girl's apartment.
"Sarah-love?" Holly kept her voice fairly low when she knocked, just in case her red-headed companion was actually sleeping. "It's Holly."

"Uh-oh..."
Sarah wasn't sure if she was more amused or annoyed at Holly's unannounced arrival. She doubted Chris shared that ambivalence. Her timing left something to be desired, but it wasn't like she knew what the sergeants had been discussing -- or that Chris was even there.
"Sorry, hon, but I can't not let her in." With an apologetic shrug, Sarah put down her mug and went to open the door. "Holly, hi...come on in, we're just having a cup of coffee."

Holly beamed at the redhead. "Hey Sarah," she greeted, stepping over the threshold. "Sorry, I was on my way back from work and I thought I'd just check in..."
And if it isn't Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome himself.
"Hi, Chris." Holly granted Sarah's partner a little wave and a brief, predictably flirtatious grin before returning her attention to Sarah. Crush or not, she wasn't about to completely invade her friend's dwelling. "I won't stay if you two are in the middle of something."

Hearing Holly’s voice outside had sparked a kind of fleeting dread in Chris, and he’d felt a short-lived ball of ice form in his stomach, before he told himself to take it easy. She wasn’t going to eat him, no matter what they called her, and besides, the nickname wasn’t literal. Still, he’d found himself clutching his coffee mug a little tighter than he needed to, but as the blonde appeared, he slipped easily into a state of outward nonchalance.
Staying in the kitchen, he greeted the wave and ‘flirty’ grin with a calm smile and a lift of his mug, a subdued welcome if ever there had been one. On the inside, of course, he was sighing; Holly had a tendency to… never let it go. He’d turned her down in the past, but she was persistent. Chris just wasn’t sure he had the energy for it right at that moment…

Sarah threw Chris a sympathetic glance. He was tired, she knew, and probably not at all up to Holly.
She supposed she was tired too, because the predominant emotion she felt herself was...resentment. Which was silly. She liked Holly, she really did, she just hadn't expected the additional company and, if she was honest with herself, didn't really want it.
"No, we're not really doing anything," she said, banishing the rude impulses and thoughts. "Just watched a movie and had ice cream, we've got a big day tomorrow. Meeting with an informant, maybe a stakeout or something...though with all the sugar and caffeine he's ingested, I'll be amazed if Chris gets enough sleep to be ready for it." She gave him a teasing grin.
"You want a cup of coffee?" she asked Holly.
