"What about the stakeout?"
Sarah had delayed in the bathroom a little, brushing her teeth and straightening up a little so that once her company had departed (or crashed on the sofa), she could go straight to bed. She came back into the living room too late to hear Chris disparaging her date, but in time to catch the words 'after the stakeout.'

The blonde turned and flashed Sarah a grin. "I was just heading out," she explained. "But call me when you get in tomorrow, will you." Her grin softened a bit, taking on less of a cheeky edge. "Just check in, tell me how it went...that sort of thing, if you don't mind."
Smiling, she adjusted her messenger back; an idly flick of the wrist tossed a loose lock of hair back into place. "And hey, stop by if you're not too tired. We haven't had a bona-fide girl's night in ages."

Sarah smiled. "That's true, we haven't. Okay, I'll call the apartment whenever we get home tomorrow; hopefully I won't be too tired to do something. Maybe we can go see --" she grinned teasingly at Chris "-- a chick flick."
She sat down on the sofa again, curling up into a bit of a sideways ball. "Thanks for dropping by, though, hon. It was good to see you." And it had been, mostly; Sarah liked her girl friends. She just...well, liked Chris more, hence his designation as her best friend. "Drive safely, okay?"

"I will," Holly assured the redhead with a smile and waved as she made her exit. "G'night, you two."
She shut the door behind her and managed to fish her keys from the bottom of her bag. Now all that remained was to pick up some grub and head on home. Granted, when she got home, she would still have to work on that blasted article, but it would get done. Eventually.

After Holly took her leave, he angled his head back and around to look at Sarah, saying to her as he did so, “That grin would have been more threatening if you’d planned to drag me along to said chick flick.” He smirked, almost triumphantly, and twisted on the arm of the chair so he didn’t have to strain his neck to see her from where he sat, too lazy to move, even though it would take minimal effort, and the actual cushions weren’t too far away.
He glanced at the door again, breathing out a brisk sigh of relief. For once, thankfully, Holly hadn’t tried to flirt with him, or get his number. It had been a long while since that had happened.

"It wasn't meant to be threatening," Sarah replied mildly. "It was more of an 'I can do things you hate to do because you won't be there' sort of expression."
She stretched a bit, tilting her head and looking up at him. "So what kind of scintillating topics did the two of you chat about? Compared to other times when you've been left alone with Holly, you look positively calm. I take it she didn't try to sit in your lap."

His shoulders lifted and dropped; he let the topic of the movie slide, since it didn’t really concern him anyway. He wouldn’t have to watch whatever mushy garbage they decided to watch, so he could be suitably nonchalant about it without effort.
Deciding to be honest, he smiled simply and said, “She asked me what Spencer was like.” He left it at that, trusting that Sarah knew him well enough to come up with her own idea of what Chris had told Holly about the detective. He didn’t exactly hide his opinion of the shorter man, because really, there wasn’t any point.
“And thankfully, no lap-sitting… this time.”

"Ah...wonderful, now I'm going to hear all about it from Holly that I'm dating an inferior male," Sarah replied, dryly. "Since I'm sure she'll place as much stock in your opinions as I do. I can hear the question already." She took a breath, then mimicked her friend's voice with uncanny accuracy. "Why are you going out with this Spencer person if Chris thinks he's such a jerk?"
She paused, waiting to register Chris's reaction to her Holly impression. "The answer, of course, is a simple one: Because he asked me."

Chris laughed at Sarah’s impression of Holly, slouching back against the couch available behind him, still seated on the arm. “Fine, fine.” He shrugged. “You can date who you like, but I never promised to like the guys.” He glanced at her, honesty bright in his eyes, and he shrugged again. “And we all know that the likelihood of me and Spencer getting along is… next to none.”
He glanced at the TV. The menu screen for the movie was still staring out at them; he had half-expected the screensaver for the player to be in full swing, forgetting that for that to happen, they needed to first stop the disc itself.

"Yeah, yeah, I know," she retorted. "You never promised to like the guys, but I didn't know that meant that you never would. I don't think you've ever met a single man I went out with who got any sort of approval from you. Not that I really thought you'd be leaping with joy at my going out with Miles, but still."
She considered the matter for a minute. "Maybe I should go out with somebody I already know you like...you might not object so strenuously." She smirked. "I did always kinda think Kevin was cute. Surely I could go out with one of the Lone Gunmen without you criticizing?"

“Oh, you’d think, wouldn’t you?” Chris smirked. It wasn’t that he thought absolutely no one was good enough, but he hadn’t yet met anyone who he thought measured up to be suitable. But then, Sarah was old enough to make her own decisions; he wasn’t about to baby her. She was his partner, not his little sister or anything like that, and he didn’t have to hold her hand through anything, even though he always wanted to protect her.
“But then, I guess, if you really want to date one of them, so long as it’s not Ray, I’m happy.” He shrugged, giving another little smirk.

"The only place I'd considering going out with Ray would be to an April Fool's Day party," Sarah said with a laugh. "He's a nice guy, but he's so....Ray." She knew he'd understand the comment without further explanation.
Absently she drew one of the shorter curls of her bangs between two fingers, studying it critically until she reached the end and released it. "I need a haircut," she mused irrelevantly. "Anyway...I'm equal parts annoyed and flattered by your attitudes. I'm annoyed because it's becoming well known that my partner doesn't think there's anyone in the precinct who's remotely good enough for me, and I have to wonder just how many people are scared that you might kick their asses. But I'm also flattered because it just goes to show how much you love me." She rolled her eyes with a smile.
"Which is, of course," she added, "why I'm living for the day you give me the Post-It note." She laughed.

Chris laughed. Sure, Ray was a friend, and one of Chris’ best, but it was well known that out of the four of them, Ray was the blatant comic relief. He was something of a fashion victim, slow on the uptake, and notoriously clumsy. But he was a good guy, and had his heart in the right place; that was the most important thing. He was there when any of the others needed him, and wasn’t actually stupid; in fact, more than once, he’d almost made Chris choke on his beer by coming out with some random, intelligent piece of trivia that no one ever expected Ray to know.
“I’m just keeping the idiots and morons at bay,” he told her with something of an apologetic shrug. “You know you love it really.” He looked around for the DVD remote, picking it up as he glanced wordlessly at his watch.

"Yes, usually," she agreed. "Sometimes I worry a little about dying an old maid, but now that I have the Post-It note to look forward to I guess that's no longer a fear." Her eyes twinkled. "Oh, I know, you're just protective. Living up to your nickname," she added. "German Shepherds are notoriously protective."
She grinned at him almost lazily, noting as he checked his watch. "Yeah, it's getting a little late, and we do have all sorts of fun plans for tomorrow, so some sleep may be in order. You heading home or taking the couch?"

“I have a reputation to uphold, you know.” He smiled casually. She had given him the nickname of Shep some time ago, and it didn’t take much to figure out what it meant, or where it came from.
“I’d better head home.” He sighed, stifling a yawn, and looked to her. “Long day tomorrow, so… I’ll need to… shower. And fresh clothes wouldn’t go amiss.” Chris chuckled, and passed her the DVD remote after hitting the ‘stop’ button. If they didn’t have to work early in the morning, then he wouldn’t have really thought twice about crashing on her couch, but with the long day ahead of them, he wanted to at least be relatively refreshed and presentable for the work that lay ahead.
