"Oh, no thanks." Holly smiled at the both of them, but shook her head. "If you two have to be doing some big police business tomorrow, I don't want to add to any 'excitement' tonight. The pair of you'll probably have to be on your toes."
She shouldered her messenger bag again and grinned as she continued, "However, Red m'dear, if you're not busy this weekend, I'd love it if you'd accompany me to the final Versace show. You never know who might show up...maybe your dear Mr. West? Jill and Erica might be coming, as well, once I ask them, that is." She looked to Chris and raised one perfectly arched eyebrow as she smiled. "Would you like to come too, Chris? It'll be a party-and-a-half, trust me."

Chris tossed Sarah a ‘very funny’ look; he could only imagine what went through Holly’s head at the mention of sleeping, or rather… not. But then, it was probably better for his frame of mind if he didn’t try to get in Holly’s head.
Usually, whenever the blonde was around, Chris was polite and didn’t shut himself out of the conversation, but he did, perhaps only unintentionally, ‘space’ a little; it was his way of avoiding overhearing girl talk he really would have rather lived without, but he knew when he was being addressed, and Holly’s voice saying his name, while not uncommon, never went without a flicker of caution going through him. “Hmm? Oh… I don’t think I’d fit in at that kinda place.” He lifted his mug. “But, uh… thanks.”

Sarah smiled at each of them in turn. "Yeah, I really can't see this guy hanging around at a Versace show," she told Holly. "I'm not averse, myself, but it'll depend on when it is. I have a date Saturday night."
She had to admit to feeling a stab of triumph as Holly's expression became terribly interested. "His name is Miles," she said, answering the unasked questions. "Miles Spencer. He's a detective down at the precinct. Remember I texted you that I was out for lunch with some cute guys? I meant this specimen drinking all my coffee, here, and two other guys from the force. Miles was one of them; he asked me to dinner after we got back."

"Well, screw Versace; take the date and run, you lucky girl." Holly's grin was slightly devious. "I'd much rather try and organize a girl's night, but if I play nice at the show, I might be able to scam a new dress or five."
The blonde chuckled briefly. "At least I'll have Erica and Jill, hopefully. It's either them, or Roger." She wrinkled her nose as she continued, "He's been getting awful clingy though -- I probably should've said 'no' when he offered that damned sports car..."

Imagine that, you give a girl a sports car and expect a commitment. What a whack-job… His sarcastic thought was kept to himself, and he shrugged subtly, draining the last of his coffee from the mug, turning to put it in the sink where it belonged, now that he was finished with it. Of course, with his coffee gone, he had no excuse to stay in the kitchen, where it was relatively safe territory.
Damn.
Oh well. He had to face the music. He was a cop for crying out loud, and more than that, he’d handled Holly before, and in more playful moods than she seemed to be in currently, so sucking up his courage, he emerged from the kitchen, and moved to perch himself on the arm of the sofa… the one closer to Sarah, and not Holly. Better safe than sorry.

Rather absently, Sarah reached up and gave Chris's cheek a pat as he sat down. "Well, you realize, Holls," she said, trying not to laugh, "that most men do get a little clingy when they hand out expensive gifts like cars. That's why I never accept anything from anyone I'm not really serious about. Except Chris," she added, nudging him playfully; her own sugar high was still pretty intact. "But I'm not allowed to be serious about him. It takes all the fun out of our relationship."
Of course, her relationship with Chris was the most serious one she'd ever had, really. But neither one of them was feeling very serious tonight, so she just ran with it.

While Holly would be the first to admit her attraction to Sarah's partner, not that she hadn't already, it really wasn't in the blonde's nature to steal another woman's man. Not that Sarah and Chris had anything going...well, Holly didn't think they had anything going, but there were times when something in back of the blonde's head questioned, 'What if?'
Anyway... "Roger's a prick, anyway," Holly revealed with a smirk. "Apparently, he gives shit away to make up for the fact that he's never around, and boy, is that ever true." She gave a roll of her eyes. "I'm starting to forget what he looks like."

"I wish I could say I know how you feel," Sarah replied dryly. "But that would require my having a relationship that lasts longer than two days."
She paused. "Ack. I think the amount of liquid caffeine I've ingested has caught up with me. Excuse me, both of you, I'll be back in a few." She made a hasty exit for the powder room.

...Well, this is delightfully awkward.
Chris was tense. Holly could sense that much, mostly because of the way he tried to keep as far away from her as possible. The fashion editor chuckled to herself; she wasn't even trying tonight. Well, might as well get the scoop on this Miles character...
"So, Chris," she began, flashing a lopsided smile and perching herself on the back of the couch. "Is this Miles Spencer a buddy of yours?"

Maybe it was the beer, or the intense ingestion of sugar and caffeine, but whatever spurred it, his thought sounded, in his head, rather comic; Nooooo, come back!
And then he was alone. With Holly. But he would keep his cool; he had an excellent poker face, as Sarah often reminded him, which lent itself well to his playing the part of ‘bad cop’ during an interrogation or the like. He could just use that same tactic, and hopefully, walk away unharmed by the exchange.
He nearly choked at the question, covering it for a very-normal clearing of his throat. Honesty is the best policy, he reminded himself, shaking his head. “Nope. Not really. At all.” He paused, and then continued, “I think the guy’s kind of an arrogant moron, but… well, what do I know, right?” Chris offered a fleeting smile and shrugged.

Huh. Interesting development. It definitely merited further investigation.
"Well, I don't know about that," she said with a shrug. "You're a bright guy, and from what I've seen, you seem to have a knack for reading people." The blonde cocked her head subtly; an inquisitive movement. "For all I know, you could be spot on about this guy, but I've never met him, so I can't judge."

Of all the topics in all the world, Holly had to have locked onto Chris’ least favourite. Really, he shouldn’t have expected anything less, he knew, but he still wanted to groan and collapse back on the sofa.
Holding off from pointing out what he thought was an obvious point about his ability to read people being derived from his being a cop, he shrugged. “He’s got his head up his own ass, and winds people like me up just for the hell of it. And he smokes.” He added the last part as if it made all the difference, and then, for a joke that probably wouldn’t make much sense to those who hadn’t eaten lunch at Long Wong’s with the group, he concluded, “And he’s in love with his dog.”

Damn. Miles sounds like a piece of work...
Holly let out a quiet snort of laughter. True, she hadn't been at Long Wong's, but Chris' tone amused her. The blonde editor knew that Chris wasn't entirely fond of her, but hopeful his distaste wasn't as strong as whatever he felt for Spencer. Maybe she was reading into it a bit too much, but something about his tone hinted jealousy. But no, that wasn't possible...was it?
Well, might as well get one more question before he tries to drag me out... Holly's voice held no hint of teasing or cheek -- yes, she could be serious, thanks very much.
"D'you think he's good enough for Sarah?"

Chris lifted a brow. “Sarah’s my best friend. I think the guy’s the biggest jerk on the planet.” He held up his hands, palms to the ceiling, at about chest height, as if they were scales; tipping them up and down, he pulled a face and shook his head. “They kinda don’t match… so no, he’s not good enough for her. If he pulled his head out of his own ass, gave a damn about people other than himself… maybe, but as he is right now? Not even close.”
It was no secret that Chris was highly critical of the men Sarah chose to date, and in his opinion, none of the ones she’d been with during their friendship had been worth her time. But she was a big girl, and she could date whoever she wanted, but that didn’t mean he had to like it. Just because he wouldn’t step in and stop it, that didn’t mean he was going to smile and say ‘that’s excellent, have a great date with Mr. Moron’.

Holly flashed a smile, hoping she didn't look too terribly please with herself. But, then again, subtle wasn't really her thing. The editor took the little bits of information that Chris had given her and catalogued them away, just in case. "You're a good friend, Chris," she told the dark-haired officer. "Sarah's a lucky girl."
And yes, Holly could talk to Tyler without using her standard 'man-eater' persona. As much as she was attracted to him, she did want him to like her, at least. She smiled at him, a simple pleasant gesture and stood, saying, "Well, I'll let the pair of you be. Would you mind tellin' Red to call me tomorrow? Just to check in after your stakeout or whatnot."
