Continued from: The Roof with Gareth.
The basement had been converted from a storage space to a wide, convenient apartment for the two of them, with enough room for ‘guests’ if they so chose to take in a stray or two. Allowing her mate to enter first, she followed him, closing and locking the door behind her quietly, without even detaching her hand from his. Down there, in their private space, the light could be shut out, along with the world. It was just the two of them.
Turning Gareth back to her, she studied his eyes for a moment, and then leaned up to kiss him, in the hopes of putting his mind even further at ease. She didn’t like it when he was tense; it made her feel tense, and her wolf was not pleased with that state of being.

Gareth responded appropriately, settling his hands at his mate's waist to keep her close as he tried to relax into the contect. He could feel his wolf's restless stirrings dwindle somewhat with Alswytha's affections, but it would never fully rest. It had never been able to; not since the former Alpha's demise. But Alswytha had always been able to soothe him, to some extent, but it didn't please him to know that he caused her agitation; he could sense it, and he knew it was because of him.
And so, the ancient wolf forced himself to relax as he held his mate to him. One hand lifted from her waist to carefully - almost tenderly - cup the back of her head and Gareth forced his wolf into a brief submission, trying to do no more than savour the moment.

Alswytha gave a sigh as she felt Gareth relax… if only slightly. Any affect she could have on her mate in this fashion was an achievement, in her book, though she had noticed that she didn’t exactly need to try very hard… after being together for so long, she had a unique hold over Gareth that just could not be duplicated. It was hers, and hers alone. No one else had that power…
And that power made Alswytha come alive inside, as if she were on fire and filled with hot energy. One of her hands lay, mirroring Gareth’s, at his waist, and her other snaked up his strong arm, working its way slowly towards his shoulder.

It seemed that the tension was slowly draining from him, being released by Alswytha's prescence; by her touch. The hand that he held at the back of her head stroked tenderly through her silky hair, gentle, but still somehow possessive. He growled into her -- a low, contented sound.
All would be well, Gareth reasoned, so long as he had his mate. They had survived and lived well enough since his defeat, which really, was only a minor setback. The former Alphas would be able to return to their past glory with a new, more powerful pack and when Gareth broke the kiss, he looked down at Alswytha, into her wolf-bright eyes, and simply smiled.

The sun was setting. Even from their basement abode, Alswytha knew that. She could sense it… feel it in her blood. A slow, content smile slipped onto her face, and she looked up to Gareth. She was draped over him slightly in the bed, one hand playing over his chest. Her eyes had been watching the movements of her fingers until that familiar, welcome tingle had started to dance down her spine.
“The moon is coming,” she murmured, anticipation heavy in her voice. Another ghost of a smile showed itself, growing slightly as her eyes wavered to their wolfen white, even if only for a moment.

They lay there contentedly, letting the night pass over them and both feeling the moon call to their wolves. Gareth's paced within him, restless, but controlled. Having lived through many a century, he could keep the creature completely docile, if he wished to. He just didn't.
"Will we run tonight?" he finally asked of his mate. One hand stroked idly over her hair and he gazed down at her. "On the outskirts, or maybe just straight through the city..." He smirked. "Iimagine the look on some poor mortal's face if he got a look at us..."

She practically purred when Gareth stroked her hair, feeling his fingers run over her richly-coloured mane, and letting her eyes slip closed. She was comfortable, but a fire burned in her, and she knew the only way to tame it would be to run, and feel the night around her, and let the light of the beautiful moon sing across her fur. How she loved the moon… it made her feel so alive, and bursting with energy.
And the more she thought about it, the worse it became. She practically shivered with anticipation now, pulling herself in tighter against Gareth before lifting herself up to look down on him, her eyes feral and excited for a moment. “A run in the city sounds wonderful,” she whispered eagerly, biting her lip as her fangs teased against her tongue. “You know how I love to tease those ‘poor’ mortals…”

Gareth laughed -- a rare sound for the former Alpha. It was gruff and low, more of a growl, really, but it was still a laugh. "Very well, my dear," he rumbled, setting his elbows beneath him in order to prop himself up. "We leave immediately. And perhaps we will find a few worthy contenders, while we're out. Who knows?"

His mate knew how rare his laughter was, and logged the sound away in her mind, even though she would know its unique traits from blocks away. After all, they had been mates for over one thousand years… they knew each other too well by now.
“Hmm… I like the sound of that,” she murmured in returned, growling in her own devious manner before granting him a brief, almost teasing kiss. She snaked her way back off of him, and stood from the bed to dress herself, so they could head off on their way. “And if we find anyone,” she began, picking her way through the items of clothing she had taken the trouble to bring along on their travels, “will we take them tonight? Or simply follow them…?”

"Follow only, for tonight," he told her as he moved, making to dress as well. "We will track down a few hopefuls and study for awhile. Best not to rush in on this sort of thing..."
But then the old wolf paused. His eyes flashed, a sudden, intense burst of color in normally plain eyes as he pondered. "Well, unless we find someone with solid potential. This city is full of possibilities..." Gareth gave a fleeting smile. "If you find someone who you think could truly do us good, then feel free to take them."

Partially dressed, she turned to her mate with a soft pine of sorts, hair falling halfway across her face, before she allowed herself a sigh. “Very well,” she conceded, knowing he was right… they shouldn’t rush into the acquiring of hopefuls. It was best to study, as he had said, if only to truly judge their selection, and then decide after a period of observation. She wasn’t the most patient creature, but she knew reason when she heard it… most of the time.
Of course, his continuation sparked intrigue in her eyes. She turned to him again, abandoning her search for the next item of clothing. The flash in his gaze only intensified her curiosity. A wide, eager smile spread across her face at his offer, and she growled with enthusiasm. “Hmm… that is tempting,” she admitted in a near-purr, moistening her lips. She crossed the room to him, angling her face up to his. “And you’ll know if I find someone…” she growled to him teasingly, her eyes lightening almost eerily. “I won’t hesitate…”

He gave a low, rumbling chuckle and lifted a hand. His fingers combed through her hair in a strangely tender fashion. There was a time when the old Alpha had been genuinely kind to all those around him. Obviously, things had changed over the centuries. Alswytha was the only one who could bring out hints of his former, gentler personality.
"I certainly hope you won't," he murmured to her. A vague smile pulled at one corner of the wolf's mouth. "We've been without a pack for too long..."

As his fingers glided through her hair, she let out a soft, low breath. Even with the whisperings in the depths of her soul, his touch still made her shiver, and she leaned into him enough to feel his heart beating strongly in his chest. She banished all thought for a moment, to simply allow herself the enjoyment of feeling that pulse. Gareth had changed so much from when she had met him, all those centuries ago, but he was still as tender and considerate to her as he had always been…
“And what is an Alpha without a pack?” she whispered back to him longingly, one hand resting against his chest, feeling the rhythmic drumming of the heart beneath her fingertips.

"Nothing," Gareth murmured in reply. "Nothing at all..."
He looked down at his mate and tilted her face up toward his, kissing her briefly. The hand in her hair shifted to cup the back of her head gently and he held the kiss for a few moment longer, relishing in the way the contact made his wolf howl and pace, and yet, it was content. Probably as close to sanity as he could ever be.
"Let's go," he growled out eagerly when they seperated. "Before the night escapes us."

She let out a low murmur of a noise; contentment and satisfaction, as she set herself back on her heels, smiling at him. Her wolf flickered in her eyes, and she turned to finish dressing herself promptly. Collecting the last few items she required, she walked back over to him, fully clothed and ready to go.
“And we wouldn’t want that,” she said to him almost slyly, her smile predatory and fleeting, but heartfelt in its deviousness. She walked confidently for the door, knowing Gareth would be right behind her.
